StreamingOT-PS Vue prices going up...options thread
In some markets (including where I'm at in Michigan), Vue customers are going to have their prices go around August or September.

The current services for streaming sporting content seem to be:
DirectTV
SlingTV
PS Vue
The two newest services for streaming are:
YouTube TV
Hulu w/Live TV
*Comparison of the 5 services with special sports related discussion
The winner for sports related content is...YouTube TV by a longshot. Owned by Google they seem to have put a huge emphasis on sports content. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPN News, SEC Network, CBS Sports Network, CSN, NBC Sports Network, Fox Sports, BTN, FS1, and FS2. $35/month
The runner-up is Hulu...in addition to a good sports lineup & other channels you apparently get access to their on-demand library, which is VERY extensive and has older content that is hard to find (i.e. seasons of The Outer Limits or Night Gallery, etc) $40/month
YouTube TV & Hulu both offer free trials.
Is anyone currently using YouTubeTV or Hulu Live? Haven't seen any comments on these in past cord cutting threads.
Youtube TV is only available in Chicago, NYC, LA, Philly, and San Francisco right now. You're out of luck in Michigan for now.
It was maybe six months before they expanded nationwide. They had to work out deals with the local TV networks. I'm assuming the same thing is happening with Youtube TV.
I really hope youtube TV gets to the Detroit area before the season starts. Not sure what I'll do otherwise.
YouTubeTV expanding to 10 new markets
Detroit is one of them. Should be online in a "couple of weeks"
Double post, oh no! Enjoy this gif instead.
Is that permanent though? I have heard for PS Vue if you try to watch outside your registered region for more than five days channels start to get blocked until you return home.
Huh, that's a good point. I'll have to test it out.
that the BTN service offered over YouTube is the football-included package?
For PSVue, it's definitely a yes, but haven't tried it yet and don't know how it's reliability compares to Sling (which has not been great).
WARNING: the a la carte streaming service directly over the web via BTN ("BTN Plus", $9.95/mo. or $79.99/year)(https://www.btn2go.com/page/btnplus) is live football-excluded. That one is for people without another service provider (i.e, cable-cutters who can't use BTN2Go) but without live football, I mean, what the...
The only thing I can think of would be parents whose kids play non-revenue sports like volleyball and soccer.
This is extremely unfortunate news, as I've been counting down the days until September when my Comcast contract was up and I could ditch their cable for Vue.
Now I will at least consider trying to get another deal from Comcast, but I think I might switch anyway. The extra $10 will probably leave about where I am paying now anyway, but it means less money to Comcast and I get the added perk of easier streaming through the Vue app when I'm on the go.
On the other hand though, I believe Vue lacks FSD+, which is important for nights the Red Wings and Pistons are both playing. I am also a little fuzzy about the ABC situation, since a game is likely to pop up on there at some point. Can any SE MI Vue users share whether they can get football games live with ABC On Demand somehow, since we lack the local ABC feed? Really don't want to get a stupid antenna just for that.
I have Vue and I don't have FSD+ on my guide. I never even looked for Pistons or Red Wings games during the season so I don't know if they push it over to FS2 or whatever. I've never tried to watch the games on demand on ABC.
I used to have an AT&T U-Verse package for cable and internet. When I switched over the Vue, I ended up keeping the bare minimum cable package (literally like 5 channels) just to keep ABC, NBC, CBS channels. It was cheaper for me to keep bare minimum TV couple with their fastest internet. I don't know if Comcast has something similar, but it's worth checking out.
Thanks for the tip on that; I didn't think about maintaining broadcast channels via Comcast. If Comcast wants to charge me a lot for internet I might switch to Uverse anyway since I live alone and don't necessarily need the extra speed even with streaming to account for. I'll have to check with them both and see what the options are.
I guess for the occasional Michigan road game on ABC I could just come up with an alternative, although I enjoy watching other big games throughout the season as well, so not being able to get those would be a bummer.
I guess I technically could check if I can stream ABC national stuff live now since I have a Comcast login. It'd be the same difference with Vue at that point, so I'll have to give it a shot with a similar sort of event between now and switching time.
Yeah, it says it has FSD, which is great for the Tigers, but nothing about FSD+, which is frequently where the Wings end up when the Pistons are also playing. I know FSD has their own streaming service which you can login with Vue just like you would Comcast, but I'm not sure whether I could get access to the FSD+ feed that way or not since the channel doesn't seem to be included with the Vue package.
I don't know about better, but I jumped on when they were offering the 100 channel package for $30/mo as long as you keep it.
After testing several options, I bought a slingbox for $90 and sent it to my dad. He doesn't actually watch TV, and if he does it's the same sports I'm watching, so no worry about fighting him over control of the box.
Dish Anywhere uses Slingbox's service to work, so your best bet may be just to buy a Slingbox.
I have the Vue package with HBO and Showtime. I'm happy with it. My fiancee tried YouTube TV (we are in Los Angeles) and she didn't like the interface.
