Where does Mike Onwenu fit best?

Submitted by ldevon1 on

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is so confident freshman lineman Michael Onwenu will factor on both sides of the ball throughout his college and pro careers, he’s willing to put a chocolate milkshake on the line.

Harbaugh, speaking to a small group of reporters Monday night after his weekly radio show, said Onwenu, who had about 35 snaps on offense and defense combined last Saturday against Rutgers, is not yet set on where he will play the majority of the time, because he’s good at both.

At the end of the day I think he should play where he is needed most and I don't think we are going to know that until the end of the sping... maybe.

But if I had to decide right now I'd say on defense. Our defense really requires that we have a defensive line that keep the offensive line off the linebackers. With that said Big Mike would eat double-teams all day. He would also allow us to play 4-3 and 3-4 without missing a beat.

Still I have to admit the blocking job he did on that long Ty Issac touchdown run was outstanding! His ability to create push on the double-team while keeping his eye up field and finding a scream safety then peeling off to wipe him out was very impressive. It made my jaw drop on two fronts, one that he saw it and two that his technique in doing it wa near flawless. He kept his hands inside and his pad level low and was balanced.

I haven't seen anything as impressive on defense, I'd give that block an A, but I think finding a player with his talent on defense will be harder than finding a player with his talent on offense.

On either side of the ball I think we are looking at a future All-B1G if not All-American

at the dline depth chart for next year, If Hurst leaves Onwenu is going to be needed. He can play the Nose and Mone could play the other DT spot, I think that's the best we can do looking at the roster. Our defense is going to take a step back next year I think. We are losing so many stars and we aren't quite at the level in recruiting to reload at all positions.

Love his versatility.  But given that Harbaugh will continue to bring in some elite lineman, Big Mike will be plugged in wherever needed to help this team continue the climb to the top.

In wide open spaces only!

Mike is so damn big that there isn't a spare fraction of an available inch left inside him anywhere, not even for the back of his eyeballs, which explains why he's so bug-eyed!!! Maybe that's what happens when he eats & extra room must be made for the food, & I saw him right after breakfast?

I would argue that Big Mike choosing us over Sparty - and recall his decision was a close one - is one of the factors in the rapid decline of the juggernaut over in East Landfill.  If Onwenu goes there, he is absolutely getting significant playing time along their lines, wherever he is needed the most, because he is an instant impact player; and Sparty is currently having big problems with their lines on both sides of the ball.  That we don't start him now is more an issue of experience, continuity, and playbook familiarity of the existing senior starters than his development of power and technique, of which Onwenu already posseses.  I'm just glad our guys don't have to worry about blocking him, other than in practice!  This is example #1 of why winning recruiting battles with our rivals is so critical.

Assuming MI can once again get great depth on the D-line, what are the chances he keeps playing both positions--maybe 10-15 snaps on defense to go with his play on the O-line?

Has anyone ever done this?

Michigan has a great OL and a great DL coach along with Harbaugh.   Harbs has a good plan for Big O and I support it.

This is one of those deals where I really don't think it matters...the kid is going to be a force wherever he plays. Should be what BWC was supposed to be.
