Submitted by ItsHarambe on

Tom Harmon

Harmon was a halfback for the Michigan from 1938 to 1940. He led the nation in scoring and was a consensus All-American in both 1939 and 1940 and won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the AP Player of the Year award in 1940. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.

During World War II, Harmon served as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps. In April 1943, he was the sole survivor of the crash of a bomber he piloted in South America en route to North Africa.

After the war, Harmon played two seasons of professional football for the Los Angeles Rams. He later pursued a career in sports broadcasting. He was the play-by-play broadcaster for the first televised Rose Bowl in the late 1940s and worked for CBS from 1950 to 1962.

Tom Harmon damn near won 2 Heisman trophies AND served in the US Army Air Corps surviving two plane crashes. #98 in your program, #1 in my book. Go Blue!

During Tom Harmon’s senior season in 1940 he led Michigan to a 40-0 win in Ohio Stadium, scoring three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, kicking four extra points, intercepting three passes, and punting three times for an average of 50 yards. At the end of the game, the Ohio State home crowd gave him a standing ovation.

if I were doing my own list it would be very hard for me to rank either above the other. Harmon was every bit as valuable to his NC team as Charles was to his.

I'm sure I'm not the first to do this, but just wanted to take inventory.  Assuming the OP doesn't want to get banned and #1 is Woodson, that means the top-25 athletes in University of Michigan history consists of:

1 Softball player

1 Swimmer who never actually swam for Michigan

4 Basketball players, and

19 Football players

0 National Champion/Hobey Baker winning Hockey players, 0 ex-Presidents of the United States, 0 Rudy T's, etc.

I don't know who these (air-quote) MGoUsers are, but this list is poop.  Thanks for taking the time though, Harambe.  Appreciate the effort.
