OT - East Coast Wolverines Prepare for Snow Emergency

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

At the risk of having my points wiped out by the lord of the board, here is a heads-up to you east coast wolverines for a pretty major snowstorm:

Up to 2' of snow in some areas.  Jealous.  Love snow storms.

Anyway, get your houses ready, gather the wife/hubby/kids, water, candles, generators, and snow shovels, and enjoy the snow from a safe place.  What is no big deal for those of us who live in the boonies can be pretty disastorous for you city-dwellers.

I went to the store yesterday for my regular weekly shopping and it was seriously cleaned out--more than 48 hours out from the Ultimate Judgment Day Storm of the Century Epic Proportions Version. Now, we've gotta make an inconvenient trip to Costco or rely on stockpiled frozen breast milk for sustenance, which only my baby daughter likes.

AND we had about 1 inch of snow yesterday that nobody really expected, which "stranded motorists for hours." Seriously. Someone I know had to stay at a hotel by work last night.

This city sucks at snow removal. I get the economics of it--not worth it buy more plow and salt trucks for something that happens only about once a year. But it is still annoying. Just hoping the beer store still has something left. Rant concluded.

Sent from my DC Snow Preparation and Panic Bunker. Please excuse any horrified screams.

I swear I've never seen someone drink a glass of milk in my eight years here. Except when it snows, then you look at the milk aisle and it seems everyone is a newborn calf. Although I did see two young ladies at the Navy Yard Harris Teeter checking out with no less than 15 bottles of wine and nothing else. That's good disaster prep.

OK. I clicked your link. Weather Underground loses a lot of credibility here. Number 4 on their list of things to know, "increased weather data may lead to increased forecast confidence". You don't say!?

If only this storm would come across the Atlantic and settle in on the Alps. It has been a few years since the last good powder season. Disappointing to see cities that have no ski resorts getting so much snow.

for a snow storm, heavy winds on Saturday will knock my power out. With a 2&5 y old this blows. I can't enjoy the snow as my house will be 60° tops in it.

Once when traveling to NC in the Winter for work I saw a truck where the owner had used a torch to cut a 55 gallon steel drum in half lengthwise and spot welded it to his front bumper to make a snow plow. American know how at it's finest.

There's going to be tropical storm force winds. That's the bad part.  It gets cold really fast with no power (for 3-4 days at least).

I went to Wegman's last night to get enough stuff for a few days. Just a normal shopping trip. People there were beside themselves.  Enormous women in fur coats dragging 3 shopping carts. Lines that stretched back to the dairy section. Utterly empty shelves, no toilet paper, etc..

People in Maryland are fucking hysterical.

I have parents visiting from Michigan currently and I gave them the heads up about the anticipated snow. They sorta shrugged their shoulders and didn't think it was a big deal, more time with the grand kiddo. I had to explain, "no, you don't understand. It will NOT be fine. We will be fine, because rational people won't lose their minds. But this area is not populated by exclusively rational people when it comes to snow. It is going to be catastrophic".

Dude, I live in VA but grew up in Michigan. Watching people bounce around like bumper cars and climbing over each other like zombies gone wild after 1/10th inch of snow last night is fucking hilarious. Store shelves are being emptied and people are getting ready to shelter in place and tune in to homeland security radio for updates from the emergency special tactics reaction control patrol American eagle see something say something over protection strategic response team. Oh my God it's the end of the world!!!!!!!!
