Hockey: Downing suspended two games, will miss GLI. Porikos suspended one game

I thought the penalties on Saturday night were the correct calls. Downing deserved the major and ejection, and Porikos deserved the minor. But I would NOT have gone further in either case.
Downing simply CANNOT hit a player that high in today's game. This not a new rule, nor is it a different interpretation of the rulebook by the officials. I knew what was going on the scoreboard as soon as I saw the hit. He's been in the NCAA long enough to know better.
Porikos, narrowly, avoided the same penalty by not leaving his feet.
HOWEVER....I think that the suspensions were too much, and far too excessive. Porikos was not even assessed a major, nor was he ejected from the game, and Downing was given a game misconduct, not a DQ. The B1G far overstepped in both of these cases.

Watching this hockey team is a bit like watching the 2004 Olympics basketball team.

Please elaborate.

Poriko's hit was near the benches, but I don't believe it was the one where the guy laid there like he'd been shot by a bazooka.

Downing has to know better. He's been marked for 3 years, six misconducts. They're not going to give him leeway on any hits. If it's boarderline, he's getting called.

That really sucks because now they're down 3 of 8 defensemen for the GLI.

Saw both hits. Downing was 2 min for charging. Porikos was not a penalty . Minny player in both instances dove and pretended injury. Neither missed a shift. Complete and utter incompetence both by the on ice officials and whatever reviewer looked at it at the Big 10. Big 10 hockey is a complete joke on all levels. The level of play has gone downhill, the officiating is awful, the tournament is completely uninteresting, and, as a fan, the schedule is hard to watch. My 16 year tenure as a season ticket holder ends this year.

Downing's was exactly this - a 2 minute charging penalty. He's hit players square in the head before, but not this time. Just outrageous that either player would get suspended.

I am not surprised by this, because the Big Ten Hockey Conference is worthless in every way.

Seems like every Monday when I skim SBN College Hockey or USCHO there's usually one or two Big Ten players suspended and I don't believe I'm seeing other leagues doing the same.

It happens in other leagues too. There was a suspension in Hockey East and two in Atlantic Hockey last week.
The reason you hear a lot more announced these days than in the past is because the on-ice game disqualification penalty has basically been erased. By NCAA rule, you can only add to a penalty called on the ice, you can't lessen it after the fact. So officials always err on the side of caution by just handing out the game misconduct and then letting the league review via video to determine if the player should sit out the next game.

Yes. He is out for the GLI.
He left his feet, man. In today's game, in today's NCAA rulebook, that's a major, every day of the week. I think I've made it clear that I didn't feel it was worth any further action than that.

Two separate issues. But yes, there should have been a facemasking call directly afterwards.
From what I saw, the 2nd one was a minor. Nothing more. After the major was called earlier in the game, the players simply were not going to get the benefit of a doubt on high hits, right or wrong.

The B1G has completely drained any interest I had left in college hockey. Growing up the GLI was a family holiday tradition. Ive been to several Frozen Fours. I was a season ticket holder for over a decade. I loved college hockey. Not so much anymore. Thanks for destroying a lifetime passion you greedy pricks.

But is anyone seeing a pattern here? I am feeling like this is (past) time to start taking this personal... Or are my younger days making me paranoid? Could somebody please talk me down? Is the B1G trying to hold Michigan down and or flat out trying to steal B1G championships from them? Or do all the teams have players suspended before or during big games or tournaments? Or possibly trying to make sure we have players out like some other teams who have players suspended for being caught DWI or punching women or frequenting brothels? I am at a loss..
