Did not know there were still Tiger fans.  One wonders why.

03/13/2019 - 7:44pm I'd like to think losing…

I'd like to think losing Norris made a difference but it didn't really.  They were about 500 before and about 500 after.

03/06/2019 - 6:16pm Only someone who doesn't…

Only someone who doesn't really like hockey would suggest getting rid of offsides.  Hey, I've got an idea for football - let's eliminate offsides - line up wherever you want.

03/02/2019 - 8:30am It was an odd group on the…

It was an odd group on the ice for Michigan at the end.  Boka and Summers both had major failures on the game winner which you knew would go in as soon as Dhooge started down the ice.   No one makes plays on this team.  Two bad teams deciding which one is worse.  Inconsistent effort and not much talent makes for a bad year for the whole team, including Mel.

02/16/2019 - 5:14pm College hockey is much…

College hockey is much different than it was in UM's glory days of the mid-90s and early 00s.  If great prospects come as 18 year olds, they stay 2 years max.  No more Brendan Morrison 4 year careers for mid to high NHLers.  Schools are having success recruiting lower level, but older, recruits.  You can have success with a bunch of 24 year olds playing 18 and 19 year olds.  The result of this is the scourge of all sports in my opinion, the dreaded parity.  Championships are much more random than they were, anyone in the tournament can win if they get on a hot streak or catch a couple breaks.  All to say, don't look for Michigan, or any team, to have the level of excellence that Michigan had from 1993 to 2005.

As for this year, the team is mediocre - mediocre talent and mediocre effort.  It has been obvious since the home loss to a crappy Vermont team in October and was plain as day in the home loss to Merrimack in January.  It was embarrassing to be at Yost that night.  When you have mediocre talent and don't play hard consistently you end up mediocre which is what this team is.

So glad you mentioned that 3 and out vs Colorado that preceded the Cordell Stewart thing.  Never should have happened.

02/15/2019 - 5:07pm The ideal outcome would be…

The ideal outcome would be the Big 10 realizes hockey is a massive failure and has materially injured the schools and college hockey generally.  But since it is all about the money and ego that will never happen.  So, might as well make everyone more miserable and welcome, Illinois, Maryland, and WTF Rutgers.  Come jump on this stinking sinking ship called Big10 hockey!  Misery demands company.

Just a bit of irony when your big contribution to the W is the ability to be confused.

02/02/2019 - 11:10pm No chance this team gets…

No chance this team gets into the tournament unless they win the big ten tournament and that is virtually impossible for this team.  Maybe if no one else showed up they could win it but I think that is the only chance.

01/31/2019 - 3:52pm I admire the OP optimism but…

I admire the OP optimism but UM hasn't had a chance for an at large berth in the NCAAs for over a month.  And the wheels aren't spinning, they are off.

01/21/2019 - 11:13am Seriously, how anyone can…

Seriously, how anyone can support this pathetic excuse for a sports team is beyond me.  Not one living member of the Ford family has ever done anything productive on their own.  Until the Lions are out of the grip of that clan of incompetence there will be no professional football team in Detroit.

01/17/2019 - 10:42am C-.   He seems to think he…

C-.   He seems to think he works for the Big10.  He is institutionalist and the institutions he is most loyal to are NCAA and Big10.  He will never be a force for change like Canham or Yost.  He is a "keep my head down and don't make waves" kind of guy.   Botched badly the gymnastics hire, so he gets the minus added.

01/17/2019 - 10:39am That will never happen.  No…

That will never happen.  No elite talent would come to Michigan if they were barred from participating in the World Juniors.  Shaky enough to get elite talent to play college hockey.  If they could not participate in this major showcase which can help their draft stock and NHL prospects players would scratch us of their list immediately.

01/08/2019 - 1:51pm The Detroit dailies dislike…

The Detroit dailies dislike Harbaugh and love Dantonini.    Dantonioini, no matter the record, is given the benefit of the doubt and treated like its only a matter of time before MSU heads back to the playoffs. 3-9 is just bad luck, injuries, and rebuilding.  For Harbaugh, it is the program is irrelevant unless Harbaugh changes his strategy, proves himself, hires different coordinators, etc etc.  Bumgardner may or may not have valid points.  When he starts showing some objectivity I'll pay attention to him.

Had season tickets 75-76, 76-77, and 77-78.  Hubbard was not a JUCO transfer, I don't believe.  He was straight out of Canton McKinley high school.  He was really skinny as a freshman and had to guard Kent Benson in those Indiana games.  Lost to Indiana 3 times that year.  Ugh.

01/07/2019 - 1:31pm Must be an old guy like me…

Must be an old guy like me who watched those two back in the day.  Britt almost always gave up at least 6 inches to the forward he would guard but would make the guy disappear anyway.  Grote just got after you everywhere on the court.

What were you doing to get maced?  We were on the field after the game and the police were all very friendly.

Meteor game for certain.  Like Iran v Iraq in the 80s.  Who cares??

01/02/2019 - 1:17pm I agree completely.  The…

I agree completely.  The conference scheme for football is going away.  I think the super conferences will be somewhat larger than 12-16 and will probably end up as East and West - maybe 10-12 teams each.  Bowl games will decrease to about half of what they are now. Declining attendance is just the harbinger for overall ratings declines that ultimately will start to impinge on the money flow and it will dawn on the schools like Alabama, Clemson, OSU, Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Penn State, and others that THEY are what is responsible for the football money-cannon, not Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Arizona, Rutgers, etc.  While the conferences have kept the tension in check so far, it won't last forever and conferences for football will be radically restructured as in-person attendance erodes at many schools and TV ratings eventually follow suit.  Non-super conference teams will actually be the keeper of the flame for the true "student-athlete" model as the super conference becomes purely minor league football.

If only the mods could bar you from voting.

12/26/2018 - 11:40am Great analysis and it boils…

Great analysis and it boils down to, "This team is just not very good."  Very disappointing first half with lots of home games.  Second half will be even tougher with only 5 of 13 games at Yost.  Not even close to being a tournament team.

12/23/2018 - 12:40pm GT is  like Michigan in that…

GT is  like Michigan in that they do enforce academic standards on their athletes and do not bend the rules to take players like Clemson, Miami, UGA.  So they have a recruiting disadvantage right away.   It will be interesting to see what happens with their new coach.  Presumably, he will have a more conventional offense and that will change the type of player they are looking for.  I've always thought we should schedule home and home with GT.  Two great academic schools with long traditions.

12/18/2018 - 4:17pm Not NY or Illinois, but…

Not NY or Illinois, but Grant lived in Detroit in 1849 and his home still exists.  It is presently located at the old State Fair Grounds but likely will be relocated to the Eastern Market area.

12/06/2018 - 3:12pm Hockey season ticket holder…

Hockey season ticket holder who has followed the team closely since the late 80s.  Went to games when I was a student 73-79 then took a few years off.  Once my sons were starting hockey themselves we started going back to Yost.  Had to wait 2 or 3 years to get season tickets in the mid90s.

11/24/2018 - 1:47pm OSU bigger and faster than…

OSU bigger and faster than we can handle.  Just have more talent.  Can win with more breaks but if talent determines this we are not going to win.

11/21/2018 - 10:30am Went in 1992.   As we…

Went in 1992.   As we entered the bleachers at the end of the horse shit, Buckeye"fans" were dumping their drinks on us from above and at least one "man" was pissing off the top of the bleachers on us.  Would never go back.  You are at the mercy of their worst fans.  Neither the stadium personnel, the campus police or the Columbus police will give one fuck what happens to you.

Sadly, when Carl leaves the Michigan Stadium booth, we will likely get one of those wildly fan-boy announcers to scream  "Mooooove those chains" or something similar.  It is the way of the major college football world.

11/02/2018 - 2:05pm It's funny to remember that,…

It's funny to remember that, at the time, most expected Webber to go to MSU, not Michigan.  Webber was already taking money from Martin by then and the payments had nothing to do with him picking Michigan.  Martin would have continued to give him money no matter where he went to school because he wanted to buy the friendship of a future star.   Of course, Webber made mistakes taking the money in the first place and then lying about it.  Webber paid the price and pled guilty to criminal contempt rather than risk a perjury trial.  But the University made some bad decisions too.  Fischer, et al covered their eyes for many years, with Webber and others, and did not act to clean up the program when, if they wanted to know what was happening, they could have discovered the problems.   And, they were adults who weren't scrapping to live above the poverty line.  So, don't boo Chris Webber.   Welcome him like a guy who said in 2003, "I just love the University of Michigan. I just hope to get back up there to play with the guys.''

10/27/2018 - 11:20am Very tough game to watch. …

Very tough game to watch.  Sloppy and slow paced the whole game.  St Lawrence not at the same talent level so they didn't have many scoring chances.  A win is a  win but it was ugly to watch.

10/26/2018 - 9:31am Typical Illitch facility…

Typical Illitch facility designed with the sole purpose of separating you from as much of your money as they can.  Everything from  tickets to parking to concessions is overpriced.  Too loud, too much non-sports stuff going on, advertising is everywhere.  Everything that is bad about pro sports.  Yost is getting like this with the constant advertising and the blaring music.

Not always well-timed.  The fake field goal failure at PSU should have done them in.

09/27/2018 - 10:36am Well, Gilbert has actually…

Well, Gilbert has actually rehabbed and put his buildings into productive use - like the David Stott Building, the First National Building, the former NBD HQ on Woodward, the Free Press Building, and the Book Building and Tower.  Illitch has rehabbed only one building of any significance in downtown, the Fox Theatre in the late 80s.  He tore down the Madison Lenox in violation of a City Order and it has been surface parking for the last 30 years.  The United Artist Building, the American Hotel, and numerous other buildings in 'District Detroit' sit vacant, unused, and deteriorating as they have for years under Olympia ownership - despite Illitch promises for reuse.  Meanwhile, surface parking and parking structures go up around LCA unabated.  It is apparent that Olympia Development has no intention of doing anything with the structures it owns other than let them crumble and convert them to surface parking.

She has a first-rate lawyer.  Brian McKeen isn't a publicity hound but he is extremely effective in representing his clients.  He is very successful and can be very selective about the cases he takes.  We will see what comes out but when I saw he was the plaintiff's lawyer it added about 10x to the credibility of the allegations.

There is no point to the NCAA except criminal facilitation when it makes money.

08/30/2018 - 6:37pm Love it that the NCAA all…

Love it that the NCAA all clear is issued as an asst coach is facing criminal charges with respect to her role in enabling sex assault.  So if she is convicted will the NCAA reopen or should we just conclude that you can commit a crime but not violate NCAA rules.  Makes you wonder a bit about those rules.

The number of days he will be football coach at Maryland is very small.

This was always Plan A.  Install Beekman and assure everyone he was interim.  Wait, stall, and see if the storm passes soon enough to avoid bringing in someone who would clean house.  Storm passes and people stop caring about MSU rape culture.  Make Beekman permanent to ensure Dantonini and Izz0 stay.  Fly the banner - Mission Accomplished.

History lesson needed.  Ford played on two National Championship football teams, was elected captain, and selected as an All American.  He was hardly "obscure."  Oh, and he played from 1932-1935 so you had that very wrong as well.  Getting your facts wrong severely impairs the credibility of your opinions.

06/26/2018 - 9:56am I didn't leave out Gholston,…

I didn't leave out Gholston, the Free Press did.  And my understanding is Gholston was a 4 star and McDowell and Rogers were both 5 stars, at least according to the Freep.  Gholston is a success, no doubt.  Getting to your second contract in the NFL generally means you are set for life unless you are stupid.  Kudos to him.  Michigan has its share of 5 star failures too, although McDowell and Rogers are examples of kids with with the talent to be stars who didn't have the brains or maturity to succeed in football or life.  Rogers didn't get the help he needed to overcome addiction and McDowell never acquired the maturity to manage his life.

Loved watching Jason Avant play.  Tough and talented.  Went hard on every play.  Smart and elusive receiver who would make the tough catch for a first down and take a hit to do it.  Great blocker too.

Article in the Freep said he was the highest ranked recruit to go to State since Malik McDowell and then Charles Rogers before him. Some great role models there.

06/02/2018 - 9:03am 2 tenors and a soprano

1. Luciano Pavarotti.  2. Joan Sutherland. 3. Jussi Bjorling.

04/28/2018 - 2:23pm Lions drafts

I was 2 when the Lions last won the Championship. All Lions’ drafts are presumed awful because of history. Their 2 best players in the 30 years quit football rather than continue earning millions of dollars playing for the Lions. What does that tell you?

04/06/2018 - 10:58am Last ND goal was complete three man breakdown

Analysis talks about Hughes' and Lavigne's failures on the game winner but fails to mention that Ceccone just cannot get beat cleanly to the outside in that circumstance.  He got caught a few feet too far up the ice and isn't fast enough to close and make contact as the ND winger skated around him.  Thus, a clean pass to the middle where Hughes seemingly was thinking the period was going to end and then isn't strong enough to effectively tie up his man or his stick.  Lavigne appears unready or in panic mode and the puck goes through him.  Here, everyone in a position to prevent the GW goal mangled it.  If anyone had done his job on that play UM goes to OT.

It was a great year for the hockey team.  It was fun to go to Yost again and the trajectory is definitely upward.  We need some defensemen who can consistently move the puck in DI hockey; outside of Hughes we are generally slow and lack elite DI-level skills on the back end.  Lavigne needs to continue to improve, especially his rebound control and glove, and we need depth beyond 6 forwards.  Mel is on it I'm sure and I'm ready for October right now.

03/15/2018 - 9:41am rather naive

Rather naive to think individual shareholders have the power to change executive compensation.  Most public companies are effectively controlled by large investor-class shareholders, hedge-funds, pension funds, mutual funds, etc.  These groups supply many of the directors of the companies that they own and there is a revolving door back and forth between the investors and the companies.  The other source for directors is CEOs of other large publically held companies. So its like a big club at that level and there is no incentive among the directors to pay their buddies less because they will likely at some time have been or want to be a CEO or a CFO so you go along to get along.  It's a club and you take care of your fellow club members at the expense of the shareholders and public at large. At least that was my observation from being an exec at a large publically-held company

02/09/2018 - 11:06am Claims investigation

To me it makes a big difference what is being investigated.  If they are investigating whether the claimed events actually happened (to the extent that is possible given the circumstances) I have no problem with it.  So, did the girl actually see Nassar, are there witnesses who can corroborate (office personel, friends, family, etc), etc.  are legitimate issues to determine.  On the other hand, if they are simply digging up dirt about the claimants personal lives to try to discredit or embarass them, its shameful.  The line is more than a little blurry here because many of the victims are making claims about the effect of the abuse on their personal lives and have put personal events in issue in the litigation.  As a  lawyer, I hope the lawyers for MSU realize that overzealous investigation of these women will only further damage their client.

01/30/2018 - 3:30pm Placeholder

Engler is, I hope,  a placeholder meant to give some sense stability and to navigate the political storm that is largely out of the school's control at this point.  The permanent appointment is what will show whether Sparty "gets it" or not.  Absolutely cannot give the post to a alum or to an in-state political hack.  Must have someone from outside the state with no prior connections to the school.  As to Mork and Iz, I'd guess the thinking is that they will stay unless the pressure becomes overwhelming, and Engler is there to help decide what is overwhelming.   Also, likely will appoint an interim AD who will depart when a new President is named.  Can't see a scenario that Mork and Iz would survive past the new AD.

12/01/2017 - 11:01am Oh, what a mistake!

Stupid Stupid Stupid.  Pitino will not be able to stand the discovery in this case.  Louisville lawyers will have every incentive to justify the firing by documenting every single crappy thing Pitino did - and there will be lots of them.   He'll try to keep it all sealed up but UL is a public university and I would think a judge would be unlikely to enter a restrictive protective order.  If discovery proceeds, it will be quite a show.  Can't wait.
