Equipment: Block M removed from home jersey and pants

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

We know there will be a new road jersey this season in the final year with adidas, but there has also been an expected tweak to the home jersey.

The criticized block M above the nameplate has been removed. Hopefully the M on the front bumper of the helmet follows it out the door.

New authentic jerseys at MDen. Methinks they'll have a tough time selling adidas gear this year.

At media day for team photo, the players wore their 2014 home jerseys with the nameplate Block M covered up on the back. Presumably since the 2015 game jerseys aren't ready yet or haven't been made.

edit: brought to my attention in the thread.

The new actual Maize colored pants no longer have the Blue Block M on them. Those have been on the pants since 1993.

You're probably right about the pants, but how did the M get on the pants in the past?  Was it sewn/embroidered?  Was it screenprinted?  UGP and similar companies would have the capability to add the M if it was requested.

Embroidered.

I, uhm....have some pants I bought at the garage sale back a few years ago. Some day I'm gonna set up a uniform display like they have at Schembechler Hall's entrance.

It just makes zero sense that they'd tell adidas to stop embroidering them so they can have the equipment staff sew them on or waste money and have someone else do it.

Where have you heard about the road jerseys?

All that's circulated is a Brandon Brown tweet of a jersey at a high school event in Detroit.  All Brandon even says that its a clean look for the road jersey, not that it is the new road jersey.

Not trying to be a dick here either, I'd just like to know more about it.

More likely reason: Media day photos are used for the whole season for various things. If the Adidas stock for this season hasn't come in yet/isn't 100% ready, they just covered up the Ms with fabric to make sure the photos are consistent for the entire year if that's how the new jerseys indeed will look.

Also see: the pants.

We are rebuilding from the ground up. Keep it simple for now. Win the Big Ten, and I bet a block M will appear again. I think what style is sold is as much a decision of UofM as any athletic apparel company. Stop transferring your own frustration onto other objects.

I think what this all proves is that the school always has the leverage as to what it wants to wear regardless of what the apparel company comes up with. Any time Michigan teams wear something silly, it's the school's fault for agreeing to wear it, not the apparel company for designing it.

I guess I'm the only one who couldn't care less. I never really paid attention, honestly. The jerseys were blue. The pants were maizeyellowhighlightergoldenrod and the helmets had wings *RR voice*.

I recently read an article which stated that numerous schools (including Michigan) will no longer be selling jerseys that are number specific to any player on the team.  This was a result of the lawsuits in place against the NCAA regarding the usage of players images.  So if you were hoping to find a #88 jersey because you're a fan of Jake Butt, you'll be out of luck.

What schools will do is offer two numbers--a generic #1 and in 2015, you can get #15 (and next year, you can get a #16 for the 2016 season).  Michigan will add #4 to the list of jerseys you can buy from the MDen, etc. because that was Harbaugh's old number.

As far as the lack of a block M on the jerseys (and pants) are concerned, it means that UM's uniforms will also be rather generic looking.  The lack of any logo attaching it to the Univesity of Michigan means it essentiallly looks like any high school jersey with the same colors.  I imagine the M below the neck line was added to the uniform to appeal more to customers wanting to buy a jersey than anything else.  Now, of course, that's gone.

Finally, I have to say that I'm a big fan of Michigan's look from the mid-1960s.  Put the block M on the sleeves (like Notre Dame has with its interlocking ND or West Virginia has with its logo) and go from there.   I'd even be cool with having the numbers on the helmets, although I think we're gonig to see the helmet stickers back on them and that would really be cluttered.

Go to the link below for the 5 August story in the NY Times titled "Days of Selling Popular College Players' Jerseys Numbered"

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/06/sports/ncaafootball/days-of-selling-p…

Besides Michigan, other schools that will sell limited jersey numbers include Ohio State, Texas A&M, Northwestern, Miami, Florida and Nebraska.

A second article about this was written by Darren Rovell with ESPN in early June.  It doesn't mention Michigan, but does outline the reasoning why there will be limited jersey number sales.  See the following link:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11036531/three-colleges-…

That's not to say an individual can't order a custom numbered jersey from MDen or some other outlet.  But if you're walking into a store with Michigan jerseys on the rack, don't be surprised if the only three numbers you find are #1, #4 and #15 this season.  There will be no numbered jerseys for a featured player such as #88 for Jake Butt.

Theory! A little late to the party but maybe, just maybe, the block 'M's were removed from the pants and jersey because.. they're being used for helmet stickers.
With all those potential 'M's going on the helmet, it would make sense to remove the others from the uniform. It would be just too cluttered that way.
