2010 Potential Impact Freshman

Submitted by Marley Nowell on
Now that the 2010 class is pretty much wrapped and should not change too much (non-qualifiers aside) I thought it would be interesting to see which incoming freshman will have a potential impact on the 2010 season since the depth chart is still thin in several places.

Quarterbacks(1)

Devin Gardner
  • Probably slated for a back-up role to Forcier (if he beats out DRob in fall camp) or a potential redshirt

Runningbacks
(2)

Stephen Hopkins (EE)

Austin White (EE)

  • With Vincent Smith the proposed nominal starter who is now unavailable until fall camp (at the earliest) this position is wide open; enrolling early helps both of their chances to make an impact
  • most think White is destined for a redshirt but enrolling early at least gives him a chance to make an impact this season

Wide Receivers
(1)

Ricardo Miller (EE)
  • The stud Florida turned Ann Arbor WR who we have heard about for some time now is about to set foot on the campus he loves and be a impact contributor this season
Slot Receivers(0)
Between the 5 guys already on the depth chart, not to mention the TEs getting some playing time, its doubtful any of the freshman see significant time here.

Offensive Line(0)
    Red-shirt city

Defensive Tackle
(0)
Both Talbout and Ash (and possibly Hankins) are considered projects and not immediate impact players. Hopefully Martin, Campbell, and Sagesse can hold this stop down.

Linebacker(1)

Josh Furman
  • With our linebacker situation (talent and depth) I hope he is good enough to play next year

Cornerback
(3)

Courtney Avery (EE)
Cullen Christian
Tony Grimes

  • With Warren "messing around" at least 1 of these guys will be the starter and the others will also see signficant playing time
  • our 2010 Defense (and team) hinge on the quick development of these guys

Safety
(2)

Marvin Robinson (EE)
Ray Vinopal
  • Depth chart is light here as well and both of these guys will see the field
  • Robinson could also be in the mix for the Spinner position
Kicker/Punter(1)

Will Hagerup
  • no one ahead of him on the depth chart at Punter

TOTALS: 11 contributors and potentially 3-4 starters

GO BLUE!

based on the fact that furman has measurables that are absolutely off the charts but is only a 3 star, Im gonna go ahead and say that hes not mentally ready to come in and contribute. id be shocked if he didnt redshirt

I haven't seen much tape of him, but from what I can tell he would have to be a big-time sleeper in order to compete with someone like Fitz or Smith (even with missing spring ball) for time, or for that matter, one of the backs lower down on the depth chart like Cox.

This is a huge recruiting class in terms of filling needs and depth...specifically on the defensive side of the ball, especially if we pull in the last 2 or 3 recruits for which we are vying.... While it may not have the "wow" factor of a top 5 class of 20 players and a bunch of 5* recruits, bringing in 26-28 solid players may be just as effective for the program given the lack of depth. In terms of D-Rob, he is way too explosive to keep off the field and did not have the time in the system to truly be judged in terms of potential at qb. That being said, Tate is clearly more accurate and seasoned at this point, and seems to have a stranglehold on the starting job. So the question becomes, how do we get the ball in D-Rob's hands...I think we need to run some more wildcat, screens, and hybrid plays (Two qbs in the backfield). IMO he needs 10-12 touches a game, whether as a rb, reciever, or qb gimmick play....Maybe even a Reggie Bush role coming out of the backfield as a reciever. Whatever it takes, he is a weapon that needs to be deployed. Players like D-Rob can lose yards on 3 straight plays, then break one for 90....Just needs enough touches. We will clearly have more talent on defense next year in terms of depth and experience...overall. That being said, if Warren leaves, the two best defenders from this year's dismal defense are gone and the team as a whole will need to step up for us to see any improvement. My hope is that the offense is so dominant that it can not only win shoot-out games, but can also control the tempo of the games as to keep the other team off the field. While the offense showed signs this year, the 3 and outs were way too plentiful, and those quick turnarounds kill an inexperienced defense with limited depth.

the bottom line is that they are all gonna get their carries. i say we let which ever one has the fewest fumbles in practice get the first audition. i honestly think that cox is gonna suprise people. granted im basing that on single digit carries this season and things iv heard of him in practice, but something tells me hes gonna be effective in our offense.
