Under Armour out of the running; decision coming in June
per el twitter
Under Armour reportedly out of UM apparel race. Nike/Adidas will duke it out; Adidas still offering ~ $4M more annually. Decision late June

Also, Adidas' pitch reportedly includes proposal to dull their yellow—no more highlighter/neon. So there's that..

annually?....your wrong....and why would they not do that when we would get an extra 4 million from Adidas?
They need every cent they can possibly get to cover the finance of running the sports, paying the administrators, facilities upgrades/maintaning, etc. Saying they don't need it is ridiculous.
Idk...
Michigan makes profits off of their atheltics programs, one of the few school that does. And the money they receive is nearly all football related.
The $9.5 billion endowment means nothing to Athletics. For over a century, Athletics funding has been entirely separate from the University's finances.
Exactly this. Michigan Athletics gets little or none of the endowment pie from the University since they are separated from the University's budget.
Before Bill Martin took over, Michigan Athletics was in the red despite the fact that University get a shit load of endowment every year.
is still a significant amount of money. Not like it's $4,000 more. The athletic department need to make as much money as much as possible in order to finance everything they're paying for like scholarships, faciltiies upgrades/maintaining, sports, etc. The less money they have to worry, the better for the athletic department.

We should also remember that the football program's profits - which are significant - are used to fund a lot of other sports and activities inside the athletic department, so even then we cannot pretend that the loss of $4,000,000 is a pittance. It might not affect football too much, but some of those programs that rely largely on that money might face issues. It's something to consider anyway.
Also, as a general note to the board...*puts on mod cap*....some people may not be familiar with the Teddy Blanks stuff, but yeah, moving forward, try to avoid posting it. There is a history there.
it should spark a dicussion on if it's worth foregoing milions of dollars just to sign with Nike. Saying $4 million is nothing like some have said is naive (not saying it's you but you know who I'm talking about).
of how much they're being offered by other apparel company. If it's the same money, then Nike is a no brainer.
I know EXACTLY who you're talking about. I'm not going to name names though.
Let's be realistic here folks.
Losing $4 million would be a whopping 2.6% cut in revenue assuming everything else stayed static.
I'm not saying we should dump the $4 million - but the department can easily handle a <3% change in revenue.

You do realize that Michigan is paying for that facility with the money donated to the athletic department by Stephen M. Ross, don't you....?
Of course you don't.
Yes - but this ignores the argument about whether we should WANT to be competitive with programs such as Washington, California, Stanford, Texas, Ohio State, Princeton, Harvard-Radcliffe, Brown, etc.
or we can go with Adidas and in four years, pay that off with a million left to spare...

Maize and Blue Hyperdunks or KDs would be pretty sweet :) if the Jordan rumors are true that would ice the cake. Michigan edition Jordans would sell faster than Hoke was selling jerseys in Ohio, if you know what I mean.
I'd get a pair for sure.

You mean, you'd be okay with Nike or Adidas throwing some yellow piping on our home blues? Or messing with the wings?
who messed with the wings? No one...non-starter
Also, if not having piping on the football jerseys is more important than 4 million to you, then there is no argument to bad had.
Why aren't you outraged!!!! /s

If Adidas does indeed pay four mil more than anyone else we're going back. Because at the end of the day uniforms are uniforms. They don't really do anything. Four million is a lot of money that you know, we could actually use for something.
Michigan was #3 in apparel sales last year per the MGoRoundtable on WTKA with adidas.
With Nike, it might go up. But how much? And how much would it go up if Michigan had adidas and starts winning in Football again?
I could make a case for all three brands, but I think Michigan should go to Nike because the most important group of people--the athletes--want Nike.
You'll still have psychos like me that will completely outfit themselves in whatever brand Michigan is wearing regardless of who they sign with.

Lol@ student athletes.
And it can be about whoever you want it to be about.

According to Ira on the MGoRoundtable, Michigan had a 77% increase in international sales and were by far the #1 growth internationally. If Nike wants us, they should offer us the highest paid Nike contract. There's no doubt, Michigan will sell more apparel than Florida State.
I agree--on gameday it's just a tag on a jersey. But in general, stupid as it seems, the brand matters. It carries most of the implications people on here have been talking about.
Jordan brand is basically ran as it's own company, they aren't going to a school as big as Michigan. It wouldn't help with recruiting either, if kids are choosing a school based on shoes it's going to be for Lebrons or Kyries, not Jordans. Nike puts way more money into technology for their newer lines than they do redesigning Jordans.
I would love to buy some Maize and Blue Jordans but it's not going to happen.
