MBB Recruiting - Jaylen Brown to visit later this week

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Scout's #1 player in 2015, Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler SF Jaylen Brown is slated to visit #Michigan Thursday and Friday of this week

While I doubt we get him, the fact that he is still visiting after this abysmal season is definitely a good sign.

When you back up your point with facts instead of unsubstantiated opinions it makes it tough  to argue against. I never realized Cal has had that much success, that is an impressive run. I still don't understand how he manages to sell these guys when they will be coming off the bench and getting reduced minutes, but the man is a great salesman.

I still think most of these guys can go to a lot of programs, have on court success and get drafted in the lottery, but when one guy has managed to play the system so well and get so much talent, it becomes difficult to argue against all the top players following suit.

implies that these guys get to the NBA because of something they are learning at Kentucky.  The players Calipari gets would be going straight to the NBA but for the 1-year-in-collge-rule.  They get to the NBA because they are already massively talented.  Hence, they could go anywhere and still be first round drafts picks.

it's impossible to say how any of these guys would do if they weren't on a fab five-talent level team. some freshmen may struggle being the top dog, surrounded by lesser talent. at kentucky (or more specifically, calipari), you are looking at a decade of relatively sustained success at getting players to the next level.

Michigan's big selling point to Jaylen should be this: while he is hyper-athletic, very quick with the ball in his hands, and has all the tools to play at the next level, his jump shot (while solid) needs work  as does his ability to go left.

Beilein should sell him on the skill development that Michigan's players have all seen.  Aubrey Dawkins went on a tear after revamping his jump shot.  Irvin's handle developed very well.  Skill development in wings is Beilein's calling card, so if he can sell Jaylen on that, we look like the school with the best chance of getting him a top-3 pick.

On the off-chance he committed, I assume this would mean that Levert would be leaving for the NBA, correct? Both in terms of playing time availability and scholarship availability?

Would more likely mean Max gets the firm handshake, freeing up a scholarship.  Brown may be more likely to commit if Caris is out the door (from a playing time perspective), but him coming on board doesn't crunch our numbers at this point.

That's what needs to be thrown at Brown...legally of course. He is a sure shot 2 year player here in our system. Landing him with all the budding talent around him could be epic. Beilein has never had a kid this good out of high school and it's crazy to think of how much he could develop him in Ann Arbor. Brown has to be willing to start a trend and not follow the Duke or Kentucky train....and that's hard to thwart.

FWIW...

According to ESPN, he has a "loyalty to adidas schools." (although in the interview he did state he is comfortable with adidas, but will go to the "best fit" regardless of brand ties)

I'm firmly in the "please, please, please go back to Nike" camp, but perhaps this is one time being affiliated with adidas might actually help us.

Well I believe he's already visited, and he's visiting again knowing full well what kind of season we had. So there is legitimate interest on his end.

There's a lot to sell to Brown. Beilein has a proven track record of developing talent, and Brown would likely start and be a huge focal point for the team. A lot of guys got a ton of experience and really started blossoming this year. The progression of Irvin, Dawkins, Doyle, Chatman, and the return of Walton can make this a very dangerous team. Brown could make them lethal. The question is just whether or not he wants to go against the norm and not flock to Duke, Kentucky or Kansas with the rest of the blue chippers.

When I look and see what Beilein did with Burke, I can only imagine what he'd be able to do with Brown.
