2016 MBB Recruiting: 6'6" G/F Josh Langford

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Coach Beilein recently visited Alabama to watch guard Josh Langford play. Apparently Michigan has intensified its recruiting efforts for the 6'6" G/F, who is a borderline 4/5* player to all of the major evaluators. According to Langford's dad, the top 3 schools in the mix right now are Michigan, Michigan State, and Florida.

Here are his most recent highlights, which are pretty filthy. Caveats for level of competition may apply, but he's played pretty well on the AAU circuits too.

The 3 and 4 are really the same position in Beilein's system--or so Beilein insists.  Irvin is mostly playing the 4 these days and he has the ball in his hands plenty---for good and for naught.  I am not sure why GRIII didn't try to do more with the ball.  It may have been because we had other ball-dominate players like Trey and Nik.  But I suspect it was just GRIII himself--perhaps a confidence thing--though towards the end of last season and during the tourney GRIII did create for himself much more often.  Yet, I do fear there is a perception out there--and one reinforced by other coaches during recruiting--that what you say is true.

I think the issue for GRIII and Irvin is the same - their handles just weren't/aren't that great. It's really tough to create for yourself if you're not a great dribbler. Langford's a much better dribbler than both Irvin and GRIII. However, I still don't think Langford could play the 4 because he looks like he's a fair bit smaller than both GRIII and Irvin.

Irvin and GRIII have benen/were given plenty of opporutnities to create for themselves and play like a 3. Irvin has gotten a bit better but sometimes guys just don't develop all-pro skills.  I don't think it's been for lack of opportunity to develop.

guarding a guy who is bigger than you in more games than not can really wear on you over the course of a couple of seasons. it's also unnatural to be banging in the post for half a game and then be expected to take people on the dribble out of the wing for the other half of a game.

there are guys out there that fit that profile but those guys are one and done types and Beilein is not recruiting them or they are picking other schools that take advantage of their inside out game

Recruiting a stretch four or big men in general has been weird because I've seen so many players 6'8 and up want/attempt to play like a guard offensively. Yet they don't want to play for Beilien because they don't feed the post enough. So many of these guys want to be considered versatile players. I think Beilien's offense encourages versatility. Maybe I'm confused hearing players/fans make these claims and I rarely see a consistent post game with good footwork in college basketball.

I feel like it's been forever since we heard any new developments on the MBB recruiting trail.  I can't wait until we finally close on some of these prospects!

I just did a quick Google search and it appears Initial Signing Day is April 15th and Final Signing Day is May 20.

Can I assume it is all sewn up on 4/15 or sooner?

Will most recruits wait until 4/15 and make a hat selection or is basketball not as Big Time as football?

I don't follow basketball recruiting nearly as closely as I should so forgive my ignorance.

Thanks in advance.

His highlights are sweet but it's kinda strange that he didn't hit that many layups.  On fast breaks he throws down tomahawks but when he drives he pulls up and hits a short jumper.  Get to the hoop young fella!
