OT: Yankees, Tigers, D'Backs complete 3 team trade

Submitted by jerseyblue on

As per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Yankees get SS Didi Gregorius from Aizona. Tigers get SP Shane Greene from NYY. Arizona gets Robbie Ray and another pitcher from Detroit.

As a Yankee fan who watched Greene pitch last year I think the Tigers did well here. I really liked Greene going forward. Little bumbed here.

Ok back to the coaching threads.

EDIT: Domingo Leyba has been named as the second guy going from Detroit to Arizona.

we got Krol and Lombardozzi as well [okay, nevermind].  Fister trade was a bad one for sure, but Dombrowski still well ahead overall--particularly all trades with the Marlins.

Every time Ray's name came up, people would start thinking bad thoughts about Dombrowski due to the stupid trade involving Fister.  This way, Tiger fans won't hear Ray's name anymore and constantly remember the Fister trade.

All that said, I'm extremely happy Dave D is our GM.  Just think back to what the Tiger's organization was like before he arrived.  Viva Dombrowski!

To me this means the tigers are: 1. Signing Max. 2. Trading a starter. I hope it's Porcello to Boston for Cespedes, and maybe the sox throw in a reliever or something. Should be a very interesting offseason.

Dombrowski has done a pretty amazing job turning this dumpster fire of a mid-market franchise into a desirable destination.  So he gets a mulligan IMO for the Fister trade.  I'm happy he didn't get stubborn and refuse to upgrade from Ray.  The only blemish on his Detroit resume is the inability to grow position players in the farm system.

Don't like giving up on a young lefty with the type of control Ray had, but Greene is more of a strike out pitcher than Ray was ever going to be.  I bet Greene ends up in the bullpen in the future.  He's had arm problems in the past and his mechanics don't look that great.

The Fister trade still irks me and his stubbornness to keep saying he didn't regret the trade. It was an awful trade and we could have used Dougie last year. I'm glad they got rid of Ray. I was not impressed in the least with him. Greene appears to be way better.

As we sit right now, I wouldn't be in a hurry to deal Porcello or Price. If we do, here's our rotation:

Verlander-Sanchez-Porcello/Price-Greene-???

Keep in mind Sanchez has hit the DL in each of the last two seasons as well.

We also still need another outfielder. JD-Gose-Davis isn't going to get it done for 162 games, especially when Gose has never shown that he can hit anywhere in his professional career, and Davis is due to revert back to his mean at age 34.

And all this is before we address any of the bullpen issues.

I have a very well connected source in the sports world who has informed me that Jim Hackett and Mark Schlissel are in the final stages of negotiations with Dave Dombrowski to make him the new AD at Michigan, and that Dombrowski is "highly likely" to bring Jim Leyland on as the next coach of the football team.

You're welcome.

billy bean always says

if you are watching your team play and you think its time to re-tool

then its already too late

DD needed to move a pitcher to clear some $ - he traded fister.  If you remember he signed Nathan like the very next day.  It didn't work out that well, but he is always trying to make the team better.

Greene should be a tiger for a while, hopefully he improves to a solid middle of the rotation guy

But Scherzer is not the most durable guy, and he's a pitcher, which means the injury risk on his seven year deal at $25M per is way outside my comfort zone. (And before you scoff and say he won't get anything near that, remember he's a Boros client and by far the best free agent pitcher on the market. Someone will pay that - maybe the Dodgers, maybe us.) Now, it's not my money, and we are looking at the closing of our Series window, but I'd rather give him 100M/3 yrs to match our window and minimize the risk of half the contract being a total loss. I'd also rather scrounge the bargain bin for one year relievers than sink it all into a single fragile asset.
