Bacon's Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. You Won't Like Plan B.
John U. Bacon on the Huge Show this afternoon, offering his updated assessment:
- Plan A is (in no order) Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh or Les Miles.
- Plan B is Greg Schiano. Dan Mullen was part of Plan B, but he's fading.
- Plan C is another Brady Hoke.

Jim McElwain at Colorado State would be a great Plan C candidate if the Plan A guys don't happen. I just don't see UM ponying up $7.5 million for a guy with just three seasons under his belt as HC. That means some other major program is going to reap the benefits at some point not too far down the road.

was pushing PJ Fleck yesterday on his show. I am impressed with that guy, but people say he's too young.
I wonder if Bacon is writing his sequeal to "3 and Out" to cover the hiring and firing of Hoke...? Maybe "Well, ugh, er...we practiced well but didn't execute."

I don't understand the Schiano angle. Can someone tell me why he may be on the short list of candidates? What does he have to offer Michigan outside of modest success at Rutgers? And he has ties to Penn State, not Michigan. This is Michigan fercryinoutloud.

I have it from good sources that Schiano is expressing interest in the UM job via back-channels... I'm not ready to #BKFinest this, but I trust my source.
In many ways Schiano makes sense as a Plan B, he was close to taking the job a few years ago and would appear to bring the attention to detail and discpline which we have been lacking and which this site expressed as hallmarks of a 'michigan man'... the jury is out on the innovation part.
While his NFL stint did not go well, neither did Nick Saban's, Pete Carrol's (first time), or Steve Spurrier's time in the NFL. His success the last few years at Rutgers suggests that he can recruit well in Florida (from his time at Miami -YTM) and can coach-up talent.
His defensive expertise would likely build upon the momentum of the current staff, and depending on who his OC would be, we should see a progression in pro-style offense.
Dont' get me wrong... I'll take any Harbaugh over Schiano.... but as a Plan B, we could do a lot worse.

Because he's won a national championship and had sustained success in the SEC -- and he played and coached for Bo Schembechler at Michigan. It's pretty simple. He's been a really good coach and there's no reason to think he wouldn't be good in Ann Arbor. We could do much worse than Les Miles. I get why people aren't crazy about him -- but, like, what do we expect at this point? If Harbaugh doesn't come, there's no other obvious home-run hires. And Les would be a very solid option.

All kidding aside, I have always been a Les Miles fan. Yeah, I want Harbaugh, but Les Miles would do great things here if we can't have Jim Harbaugh.
I just want nice things again...
