Why we are not competitive in pictures

Hoke when the refs make a bad call against us:

Hoke when a player screws up:

Schembechler:

Note: he used that yardstick both to measure your foot placement and splits, and to whack you when you were off by a fraction of an inch. Details man, details.

[Edit: I think some of you are taking me too literally, and are missing some of the implied humor in the extremity of the cases: there is a careful balance.

Also, there is a point that Bo managed the details in an authortarian manner, and therefore no one wanted to screw up the details so they focused on them.]

Of course it doesn't explain everything, but I do believe teams (especially at the collegiate level) take on the personality of their coach, to a large extent.  We've got all this talent, but it ain't working, and my gut sense says it's partly tied to Hoke's personality, style, approach, etc.

That last clip especially (with no PBP/color commentary, just the raw crowd noise) shows how much it fired up the fans and entire atmosphere at Michigan Stadium.  Who couldn't be ready to march into battle for and with Bo after experiencing that?!

That's the kind of "fire in the belly" that now seems to be so lacking on the sidelines---the only "fire in the belly" Hoke might have probably only occurs when he's eaten something too spicy.

I seem to recall that Rich Rod was criticized for colorful speech at practices.  At least initially was blamed for Mr. Plow's departure.

Should we hire a professional yeller to yell for Hoke?  A yell coach?  Clearly that will prevent Countess from missing jams in 1 on 1 coverage, right?

I love Bo's hat. That's a block M hat. Haven't seen one for sale in years so I have to keep wearing the filthy one in my closet.

Also love the maize in the uniforms.

and Woody Hayes once said, "show me a good loser and I will show you a loser."   HELLO!

I could happily tolerate  some timely nuclear rigtheous indignation.  And, I think the team needs to see this periodically.  This is not Mr. Roger's F-ing Neighborhood here. At least it is not supposed to be.

This is BS. In 2011, after Will Hagerup fumbled a good deep snap and nearly cost us a chance for a huge rivalry victory over Ohio, Brady Hoke calmed him down, didn't scream and kept the kid's spirits high. He was universally praised by that because he was winning.

Now, for doing the same thing, he would be trashed by everyone who complimented them. Ipso facto, sideline demeanor means nothing as reactions to it are shaped entirely by other considerations.

All of the great coaches know when to "turn it up to 11" when giving the business to the officials (sometimes they walk a fine line, other times they cross it, but they all do it). Even John Beilein has added that to his aresenal.

That Brady Hoke never changes his temperment is reflected in how his players play.

Bo was 40-17
Hoke was 47-50

Other than being a "Michigan Man", which Bo wasn't, what gave anyone the idea that Hoke would be any better than his record indicated? Oh, other than the arrogance of our AD!

Some teams get pumped up when they see their coach get upset.  My football coach would never get mad at us (except when you did a really dumb penalty, or anytime you did something dirty that was flagged), but if we were dragging and the other team did something questionable, or there was a questionable call against us, he would get really upset.  In a way this fired us up, it was kind of an us against them sort of thing.

I guess this is the strategy that baseball managers have when they get thrown out over a ball/strike call, not sure that it always works in baseball.

But I think the real the difference between Beilein and Hoke, is that Beilein knows his players a lot better (my guess, and probably since he has far fewer players on his team), and therefore he can provide the right encouragement to build up player confidence (if you ever watch those silly inside the locker room speeches at half-time on ESPN, you see Beilein talk about the technical issues and strategy, and then Bacari Alexander give the 'rah-rah' speech.

I am not sure what happens with the football team (clearly half time adjustments are not stressed or taken seriously), but I just get this since that Hoke does not know his team and players that well.  This is the case with player development, but I am not sure he really knows how to get his team going.

would be these.  Minus the headset of course, Hoke is Marinelli.  Good men and good D Line coaches, terrible head coaches.  Pound the rock...

I have said this since day one about Hoke but when i did i got a lot of shit for it..now people are finally realizing that he holds no one account during a game when things go wrong..there is nothing wrong with getting on the players face or twisting their helmet when they get soft and keep making mistakes..i remember when i played in high school the best way our coach got us mad was by twisting our face mask back and forth..boy did it piss off players and made them take the anger on the other team..for god'a sake it is football one of the most physical/manly games out there...
Hoke on the other side just claps and slaps their ass, i never see him pull a player on the side and yell at them
Look at Saban, Dantonio, Kelly how they react when a player messes up
