Red Wings sign Kevin Porter
The Hobey Baker winner is back home.
DET signs Kevin Porter to a two-way deal. Split last season between BUF (NHL) and Rochester (AHL).

Well, yeah.
Glad they got him, but this unfortunately in no way changes the unmitigated failure to get a top D-man. It's trade or promote more Griffins, hopefully the latter.
They're saying to get Tyler Myers it would take a high pick+Nyquist/Tatar/Jurco/Mantha. I would much rather have them call up Sproul.
Agreed. Bring up Sproul/Oullet, we definitely can't give up any of the guys you mentioned.
Ouellet would be good too. I said Sproul mainly because Babcock really wants a righty to balance things out.
"Trends of the Day: The Detroit Red Wings don't have the sway in the marketplace that they used to have"
:(
The fact that we now seem to be out of the running to get Matt Niskanen seems to lend much credence to the notion that the brand equity of the Red Wings is not what it has been recently. The Wingin' It In Motown blog had an article Sunday about how they would pursue Christian Ehrhoff as well, but it seems like the list of good defensemen is a bit short when it comes to UFAs this year. I could be wrong about that though.
Question for all you big Wings fans:
Kevin Porter's 07-08 senior season at Michigan was unbelievable, to the point where the Hobey Baker was a foregone conclusion with several weeks to go in the season. However he hasn't made too huge of an impact at the NHL level while other players who were very good, if less successful, at the college level are currently tearing it up in the league...is this one of those things like baseball where college success is less of an indicator of pro potential or maybe just like basketball where if you're still playing in college as a senior, you're not good enough?
This is just "turrible"
process several years ago. Now the Wings are stuck in purgatory being not good enough to contend for a cup or attract the top free agents, but they are good enough to scrape into the playoffs, get a worse draft pick and keep the kids down on the farm. The Cup window closed when Lidstrom retired, but Holland thinks as long as the playoff streak keeps going he is succeeding.
When was the last great signing by Holland? Hossa?
Wings just signed another Hobey winner - Miele who played at Miami.
The Wings have inexplicably re-signed Kyle Quincey, and with a raise. Hilarous.
Cleary and don't forget Samuelsson. Fuck it let's re-sign Bert and Legwand too.
You can't just SAY things like that! You're mistaking that deal for Quincey though. They haven't signed Cleary yet, but I'm fully expecting them to.
I think it has become increasingly clear since Nill and Yzerman left. This is three straight years of mind boggling stupidity in the trade market, and free agency (signing Tootoo, and Samuelson, trading a first round pick for Quincey, resigning Cleary so Nyquist would get sent down, dealing Jarnkrok for Legwand last year, and then this face plant). Its made even worse by watching Stevie Y turn Tampa into a legit East contender, and Nill turn around the Stars in one year.
Ugh. Dan Cleary. Imagine how many more assists Datsyuk would have in his career if he had a more proficient winger with him than Cleary. I cannot count how many times ive seen Cleary fumble or whiff on gift wrapped passes from Pavel.
go scour Europe . .
Because there's no longer only one scout at most of those tiny rinks in Sweden. Everyone follows Nils Andersson around hoping to get the next Lidstrom.
