Patterson interview talking about us not getting our playmakers in space like other programs

A pretty casual interview with Patterson with one answer that I think is telling.

“Just letting guys go make plays,” Patterson said. “All the best athletes in the country are getting put into open space, and there’s no reason why we can’t. We did a lot of good stuff this year, but I think we’re realizing how talented we really are -- and explosive we can be.”

Although that seems innocuous, I believe that does show frustration with the play calling. All the fans know it, and obviously the players known it too. It's just unusual in a Harbaugh regime to see it mentioned by someone in the program.

I dunno, you've got 3 marvelous athletes, DPJ, Black, and Collins--speed, hops, size, glue covered hands, and 63% of the time they're out there blocking for running plays that aren't as productive as throws to them. They're out there blocking for Tru Wilson a dozen times a game or they're decoys for throws to McKeon. The fact that none of them could break 1000 yards, much less 2, is offensive malpractice. Harbaugh needs to hire a spread oc instead of hiring another pro-style guy and shoehorning him into some role that doesn't fit the offenses he knows.

Get Mason the ball in space also & let him truck a few db's. Nobody can run thru a stacked box.

Look at how good we did at getting Peppers the ball in space in the big games. Oh wait....

I honestly think this a good thing and shows that the program as a whole is starting to see what everyone else has been seeing all along. I expect a different approach to the offense going forward. God I hope I’m not wrong.

I vaguely remember a post Brian wrote in which he tried to rationalize the success of different offenses in the NCAA. When discussing Oklahoma, he said it was because they had "an NFL quarterback throwing to NFL wide receivers". Shea Patterson may not be Baker Mayfield (yet), but he will be an NFL quarterback one day. Tariq, DPJ, and Nico are all NFL wide receivers. If Harbaugh can't make it work with those tools next year, when will he ever?

Time is running out. Harbaugh's contract has 3 more years on it. I doubt he gets to 2021 without either an extension or parting ways (due to the recruiting implications of a lame duck coach), so he really only has 2 years at best. Better to figure it out next year when you've got a returning senior QB rather than enter a do-or-die 2020 season without Shea and possibly DPJ.

Shea would be prefer not to be involved with an inept and stubborn offense. I can appreciate his will not to suck.
