Maurice Hurst #1 on Football Outsiders 'prospect' list
The piece linked above ($) has Maurice Hurst #1. Qualifying players must be:
-
Third-round pick or lower, or undrafted, from the classes of 2016-2018
-
500 or fewer offensive or defensive career snaps through Week 10 of 2018 (except running backs, who have a maximum of 300 snaps)
-
No signed contract extension
-
Age 26 or younger
For context, Da'Shawn Hand is #3, Wormley also made the list along with a few other names you might remember from the recruiting process. Great to see Mo getting some of the recognition he deserves. He has a bright career ahead of him!

Mo Hurst will, hopefully, go down in history as the biggest steal of any draft.
And yeah, I know, Tom Brady. But I'd argue that Hurst was known first round talent, and every single team had an aneurysm when it came time to draft him.

You just tried to hand-wave Tom Brady but you can’t hand-wave Tom Brady in any conversation about the “biggest steal in any draft.”
November 16th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
The biggest draft mistake***
Because Brady didn't have ridiculous obvious talent and developed a lot in the NFL, I see your point if you reword it like that lol. It was infuriating watching him fall so far knowing it was probably BS.

Actually, the issue with Hurst is that his talent was known but that teams believed his health was a ticking time bomb. Most aren't surprised by his performance on the field to date; it's the possibility that things could go very wrong unexpectedly at an indeterminate time that had them spooked. In that sense, the jury is still out for them.

If that's the criteria, Randy Moss is up there. He had known Hall of Fame talent, and teams passed on him for character issues, I guess. He dropped to 21st, and then of course went on to have a ridiculous HoF career.

21st?! In the first Round?! For anyone to be in the top 21 players in the country that year there is an expectation that they will be great. I don't think you understand the question.
November 16th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
Fantastic, go Mo! Although on the other hand, we all knew this would happen(makes me sick as a Lions fan).
November 16th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
That's the one thing the Detroit Lions are constantly good at.
November 16th, 2018 at 1:47 PM ^
Yep picking Drew Stanton instead of David Harris is another shining example of Lions draft brilliance!
November 16th, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
Whose career would you rather them ruin?
November 16th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
YES! I always want to see my local favorites play in Detroit and then realize that no player actually wants to be drafted by Detroit.
November 16th, 2018 at 7:12 PM ^
Ebron over Lewan and Donald pissed me off.
November 16th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
all i can think is how much money the scouts masquerading as doctors cost that guy.
nobody who saw mo hurst actually play football last year is surprised that he's a terrific player. every team in the nfl should be ashamed that they didn't draft him.
i can honestly see why tom brady might not have gotten drafted in the first round...he was kinda doughey and was never obviously a once-in-a-lifetime talent. but passing on mo hurst? multiple times? that's professional malpractice, right there.

Maurice Hurst signed a four year contract with the Oakland Raiders worth $2,779,044 on May 16, 2018. Hurst received a $319,044 signing bonus.
Could have been MUCH bigger.
November 16th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
This is true, but the bump from 1st to 2nd contract is WAY larger than the difference between what a mid-1st rounder and a 5th rounder makes. If Mo continues to perform, he will get paid all the same.
November 16th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
So, basically it took every NFL team screwing up 3 to 4 times (generously) for Oakland to come away with something positive this season. BTW, just looked at their roster and hadn't realized Leon Hall was still in the league. 12 year career...Go Blue!

Hand is playing really well. In fact I think he's the #3 rated DL by PFF.

Godspeed Mr. Hurst.

Go Mo! Go Blue!

I love that this is happening. So happy for Mo. We all got to watch him obliterate the core of our opponent’s o-lines during his time here.
In my mind, if we had him to add to this year’s D, our D actually would be comparable to Alabama’s O. Our relative weakest spot on D is Mo’s void in my opinion.
