ATTENTION Beer Drinkers

Submitted by Canadian on

Ladies and gentlemen I have recently run into a bit of a problem... I have a bit of a problem and I am turning to you guys.

First I want to thank and blame you for introducing me to the world of craft brews. I have a collection of over 60 different kinds of beers at home, the vast majority purchased on the other side of the border.

Second I want to say FUCK YOU to anyone who created/posted in a drinking thread... you asshats are the reason I am both loving life and the creators of this problem.

Now for the problem; the Canadian dollar is getting worse and worse which is causing me to spend more money over in Michigan when I'm purchasing my beer. In the fall it was costing me, on average, an extra $5/24 beers, which I was more than happy with as 6 packs are more expensive and the quality of beer is better.

This past weekend thanks to the struggling Canadian Dollar it cost an extra $12/24 beers.

I call on you MGoBloggers, where if anywhere is beer cheaper? Not sure how the prices are determined, over here it's all done through government retailers so prices are the same no matter where you buy.

Thanks for any and all help

and i guess i should also ask for suggestions on beer and on stores that have a wide variety in and around AA.

I scanned this thread quickly and just in case I missed some gem amidst all the dross I apologise in advance.

First of all this thread sucks - post a list of what you're looking for, in order of priority, and maybe you'll find that hotspot you're looking for. With nothing concrete to go on, you're going to get nothing but general bullshit.

Sharp minds need clearly defined problems, clearly defined questions; then you'll get clear, useful answers.

If you post a list of what you're seeking out, I'm sure some guys here have some knowledge that might help you. I'm in Oak Park which is about 25 minutes or so from the tunnel, I can keep my eyes peeled for what you're looking for and reply with prices in $ U.S..

Maybe someone else can get closer. Eventually you'll get useful info this way by letting us know exactly what you need.

Unless this whole thread is a troll thread. In which case, Fuck You.

If serious, good luck, I'll keep my eyes peeled once you supply a top 10 or 20 list.

Meijer is usually where I end up buying my beer as its easy to grab when getting groceries. Hiller's over in Arborland has a pretty good selection too as far as a grocery store goes. A decent selection of bombers that you can't get at Meijer, as well as some different 6 packs. Don't really remember what their prices were like since I usually end up buying different stuff every time.

if there is that much of a difference in price. Recommendations from me would be Grand Rapids Brewing, Bells, Founders. Depending on what type of beer you like they have a lot of good choices. Some others are Rockford Brewing Company and New Holland Brewing, but those are mostly on the west side of the state.

Come to Chicago.  Find a Binnys.  Pass out from stimulation of both selection and price.

Unless you're me (since the celiac diagnosis) when you get to choose from about 5 decent  non-gluten beers or shit your brains out because it's worth it to have a decent IPA just once for old times' sake...

oddly enough i've been tasked to find gluten-free beers for a guy i play hockey with. i stumbled across New Grist, form Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, at the local LCBO and was surprised at how not awful it was. a little too citrusy for me to truly enjoy but it was ok

1) Prairie Path from Two Brothers Brewing in Warrenville, IL

2) Omission from Widmer Brothers in Portland

Both are made from malt and then have gluten removed so they're quite good.  They run 9 to ten bucks for a six (though target has Omission for 7!!).  Binnys has a couple good European GF brews, but the price on those would make the Brewers Retail people blush (around $6 or $7 for a 20 oz bottle).  You're right that all the sorghum stuff is way too sweet.

Go to Sam's club or Costco. You can usually find semi-craft (I'm a big beer snob) at decent prices.

The kicker: you don't need to be a member to purchase booze at membership under state law

Homebrewing is great, and a 5 gallon batch yields 2 cases of bottled beer.  Ignoring equipment cost (which is important), I spend about $35 per batch.  I still buy craft beers, and find that I enjoy all beer more now that I am brewing.

I cannot make the really creative beers yet, mostly because I still cannot get past the fear of making 2 cases of bad beer so I stick to the recipe...  But I notice flavors and just am a lot more curious as to what is in a beer...

Ann Arbor has a great Homebrewing store (Adventures in Homebrewing), unfortunately I live in Dublin, OH...

You would be hard pressed to find a place cheaper than Champane's Wine Cellars on Chicago Rd in Warren, MI.  Not sure if it is worth the drive to you though.
