OT - Snowmageddon POSBANG

Submitted by TatuajeVI on

The weather predictions for today and tonight have been all over the news with warnings of a nasty winter storm, so what better excuse for a POSBANG?! North of Detroit, we've only gotten about an inch of snow so far. The weather reports are saying the afternoon should bring the heaviest snow. Possible accumulation of 8-14 inches depending on your area. Monday and Tuesday we may set records for low temperatures. Be safe out there!

Update from Chicagoland. At least 6 inches since I shoveled this morning and the wind is starting to pick up. Thinking I'll be extending my two week vacation at least one more day tomorrow.

have everyone here in West Michigan worked up. I see my snowblower getting a workout, the themostat getting a rare bump upward, and a quick trip to the grocery for my favorite beverages. Bunkering down with sports and brew. No so bad...

Rear-wheel drive vehicles are the MOST fun in this weather.  That doesn't mean they're the easiest or safest (far from it), but fun rarely (if ever) coorlates with safety or ease.

Basically it comes down to three things:

1 - Attitude - is it exciting or is it scary?

2 - Tires - Rear wheel drive cars/trucks pretty much require snow/ice tires in the winter.

3 - Limit Handling of the vehicle - assuming you can get moving and brake (which relies on the tires) effectively, the reduced traction in these conditions reduces the speeds and inputs (to throttle and/or brakes) at which you encounter your vehicles limit handling characteristics.  This is where there's potential for loads of fun depending on your car's behavior.  As someone who's driven RWD pickup trucks in the winter before, it can be no fun at all.  But as someone who currently drives a BMW 3-Series on Blizzaks (snow tires), it can be a total joy.

Yeah my car did not have winter/ice tires because I planned for it to sit in the garage. I will agree that rear wheel tires can be fun at times in the winter, but not recommended most of the time. So I will admit they can be fun, it just depends on the driver. I will argue though that I think my Jeep is probably more fun, but it could be debatable. My problem is my sister wrecked my rear wheel drive F-150 when I was in high school(with me in the truck too). So my attitude is usually not very good in the winter with rear wheel drive vehicles. I get too worked up about driving around in one in the winter.

Either way I can see why you would enjoy driving your BMW with good winter tires. It is just really not for me because of past experience. So when my dad called to tell me he wrecked my Mustang, you can imagine I was not surprised. I don't even take it out in the rain, let alone snow. But that could be because I saved up for it for an insanely long time, like way before I was driving. And as I mentioned, it didn't have winter/snow tires and really the back tires needed replaced.

Now living in SW Florida. 80+ today but highs in the 50's Tuesday. May have to wear long pants while playing golf. God I hate winter.

We'd better load up on milk and TP just in case there is panic.

I'm kidding, but I will remember to tell you about our beautiful 78 degree summer days when it is 98 degrees and the fire ants and Gators are eating you in Florida!  And the pythons that people apparently let loose in the Everglades.  And the Hurricanes.

In Kzoo. Sounds like a lot of stuff is closed tomorrow. Not my job. Need to get to bed. The drive into work at 4am tomorrow should be interesting.
