Copper Bowl Open Thread, MSU vs. TCU

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

The Alamo Bowl is going to run late so they'll probably start it on ESPNU or something. I don't know if I picked TCU because I thought they would win or I just wanted to root against MSU. Either way it made te night easier.

Oh well.  Win for the B1G, and I think Sparty will again be mediocre next year.

But going with Cook is hardly a genius move when Maxwell was sucking as badly as he did (and really has all year).

I don't really agree with that.  Sure early in the year they were terrible, but they survived that for the most part.  After that it became a magnification of that being the thing.  Every team drops balls.  They came to be average to slightly below average once Burbridge emerged.  And Sims is an elite TE as a receiving option.  There weren't many (any?) B1G teams with more than one elite receiving option, and many/most teams had below average WR's.

And any team with Bell as the RB should have play-action wide-openness of WR's built in.  Not necessarily because he's great, but because he's a load and you want to meet guys like that near the line (pulling LBs into the play action early).

But you don't really need me to argue that he was bad.  His own coach benched him for a freshman on the last drive of their bowl game.

The RB was wide open if boykin had just thrown it short I realize that there was an offensive holding call on the play, but jeez, what a rotten throw.

Off a defensive holding call, but they pick up the interference flag that would have offset the penalties for TCU and effectively ending the game. Meh.

Kudos to MSU.  They controlled the second half of this game.  They ran the ball on a pretty stout D and got some opportunistic passing going.  So the Big Ten is 1-1 and has looked respectably in both games.

BTW, this is about the third time this season someone has said "Quick, what are they saying on the RCMB?" in the middle of a game MSU was losing - and each time, they went on to win and this board looked ridiculous.  How about you at least wait until the game is over to obsess over MSU fan reaction?

Score one for the Big Ten. Good to be competitive and win some of these games. Stronger conference means more opportunities especially with the impending playoff unless BIG champion is garunteed a place. Really want to shut down the Essss Eeee Seeee on Tuesday.

"real" trophy rests in Ann Arbor this year. It's time for the rest of the B10 to do their part. With that said I only see Michigan, NW and Wisconsin (if they bring their A game) winning.

Sparty definitely got some help from the officials on their last drive and on TCU's last drive.  Too bad: it would have been great to see them go 6-7 this year.

Feeling way better about the State game next year the more I watch them play. I can't picture their offense being much better than what we saw this year. If Bell and Sims, bolt probably worse. Neither of those quarterbacks present many problems for a defense.

I would think Sims is going to leave, really think his stock is at a high now. If Bell somehow is graded as a late 1st or early 2nd round, I think he'll leave, thing is, I doubt he is a top 2 round player at this juncture, however, with a better oline, he could be good. I think if he returns, their season will be similar to this year, win total ranging from 6-10. We will more than likely have issues on offense too due to a new oline and a struggling ground game.

You are right, he does not have very good speed. He compares to LeShoure, and I think the Lions picked him late 1st round. If he is projected as at least a 2nd rounder, he should go due to RB's injury possibilities, not that he is a lattimore type back, but I think the general rule with RB's is if you have a chance to be picked in the top 3 rounds, you leave.

I hope that we can hold up our end of the B1G bargain on Tuesday. While I hate MSU with a serious passion, I think we need to acknowledge that they beat an SEC team in their bowl game last year, and--lemon-sucking look or not--that Dantonio and his team have earned serious respect on the national stage. Even their uniforms kinda looked okay last night (he offered grudgingly).

Between Minny's valor and inspired defensive effort against Tech and the Spartans, the Big Ten is off to a better start than I expected.

I agree, as much as I hate sparty I am happy the big ten got their first bowl win against a respectable team. Now Jan 1st will either be another year where we see how the rest of the big ten pans out
