Mailbag: Iowa Asia Catchup, Box Details
Hey kids: I am headed out to NYC today. That plus knee rehab equals no time (no time). Mathlete will hit you up later today. It's June, be chill. Posting should continue as normal after today.
From reader Will Gallagher comes this item:
Hi there. I'm watching a Japanese movie and halfway through, I was surprised to see the main character wearing a blue shirt with maize lettering that says "The Lord is my Shepherd, but Bo is my coach." Just in case you needed any more MGoShirt ideas. Screenshot included.
I've asked after what this movie actually is… but probably can't put it in the store since it's obviously someone else's idea. [ED: "Rainbow Song." From 2006, which makes that shirt even weirder.]
For now, the Asian pop culture reference scoreboard stands at Iowa two (a terrible indie video and Girls' Generation), Michigan one. Unless you want to count a dozen Korean pop stars snuggling with your helmet more than a shirt, which fair enough.
Dollin' up the boxes.
I have neither enough points to start a thread nor the requisite photoshop skills to make this look right, but see attached and tell me if that is or is not an improvement... I like the full "UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN" myself, but could be talked in to the block M. It needs something, with the stands full you can't even tell its Michigan Stadium.
I think the emailer is right: the boxes, while gorgeous on the outside, leave a little something to be desired once you're inside the stadium. They could use some maize trim and a simple, non-halo-esque logo or notification that this is a university. Professionally photoshopped, of course.
Another thing to do is to put the retired/legends numbers on one of the boxes like they do many other places. Before the boxes, Michigan never had anywhere to put said names. Now they do.
Also, when are we going to get the long-waited crazy person bleachers on top of those things? "See Michigan play football from the moon!" That's a freebie, Hunter S Lochmann. Call me. We'll push that envelope… to the moon. Call me, seriously. I have ideas for days.
what about paired winged helmets-instantly recognizable and a hit with the key demographic
I like the prior idea of a "Memorial Area" somewhere near the stadium.
Ohio has its retired numbers in their stadium and they look stupid (but so does everything about that stadium except the maize and blue artwork in the atrium)
I am partial to some type of lettering on the pressbox. There is just too much blue there, hell my wife even says that and shes about as impartial of a fan as you can get.
(Depending which game this is)
"Sit with the snipers"
I like the block M, but with the M in the stands and on the field it's like "Okay...we get it."
How do we make this happen? It NEEDS to happen.
Can someone e-mail DB?
DB has "M" plastered on the jerseys, the back of the scoreboards. Let's hear it for the University of Michigan, yo!
So I'll add that I don't want to see the "ring of honor" because it is either never even around the stadium or you have to spend money to adjust the whole thing when you add a number.
I want a memorial park outside the stadium like the Yankees have. Statues, plaques, signs, whatever...and not just stuff on old players. How about an old seat from Michigan Stadium. Whatever happened to the old "Michigan Stadium" on the old press box. Make it almost like an outdoor museum just for Michigan football.
I mean have a countdown clock to the next Ohio game and next MSU game.
I mentioned an old chair or piece of the old Michigan Stadium.
Statues...this way you can also honor coaches if you feel their deserving of such an honor.
Have a wall with the story and names of all of the players on the national championship teams.
Something on the point-a-minute offense.
Maybe a "THIS IS MICHIGAN" video enclosed in plexiglass that loops over and over.
Bronze over a pair of cleats from Shoelace (obviously make a replica).
Have a corner/space of the park dedicated to a position. This way you can take a LB recruit or your little son who's a LB on his pee-wee team to the LB section and see names like Sam Sword, Ian Gold, Larry Foote...names that will never be in the Hall of Fame, but should never die.
That last one is one of the things I want most. We need to find a way to honor MORE players. Not just the LEGENDS. Not just the statue worthy folks. But names like Sword, Foote and Gold have a place in Michigan history and should not be forgotten in 40 years because they didn't do enough to have a patch (or in this case a statue or key player plaque). Even if it's just a stone wall with the names of the "All B1G Calibur" players...that's fine. Not everyone can be Woodson or Howard.
No yellow stripe but I could go with Michigan Stadium on the box. I'd rather the font be like on the outside of the old scoreboards from the early 80's.
already on the scoreboards, so it would be repetitive.
I'd like to see University of Michigan on the side that the TV cameras face (which I think would be on the East Boxes). It is a university after all, and I feel like people value brands that are associated with non-profit/public good more than just a sports team. For example, I would be that the value of brands like the Red Cross and Race for the Cure are more valuable per dollar spend on building brand awareness than say the New York Knicks.
Plus University of Michigan just sounds awesome.
Wolverines to the University of Michigan and we get something really cheesy, and you know DB likes cheesy.
THIS IS MICHIGAN STADIUM, FERGODSAKES gets my vote.
Continuous video of Kate happy dancing off to the side works for me too.
Couldn't you make a T-shirt that said,
"The Lord is my Shepherd,
But HOKE is my Coach."
I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few variations of that shirt all over the country, especially down south.
Regarding the boxes, I'm worried that someone will alert Brandon to this thread and we'll be seeing "WELCOME TO THE B1G HOUSE" bracketed by curly fries across the boxes.
I like pretty much all of these ideas. I'd like each side to be different though. I like the idea of having one side have the retired/honored jerseys, and the other saying something like "42 big ten titles, 11 national titles, etc." each stat separated by a block M. make sure those numbers are easy to update though!
to save room for the Curly Fries!
i am sure brandon is eyeing all that empty space above the suites and licking his chops at the idea of getting some corporate branding up there.
University of Michigan looks pretty classy.
AD person assigned to mgoblog coverage, don't you think so?
I think a simple maize "University of Michigan" in classy font with no other lines would look great. Otherwise, no need to mess with it.
I'm no expert on design, but I think you'd have to take into account how the boxes look at night with the lights on. It seems to me that anything added to that top area would have to be restricted to the space where there are no lights above.
I'd prefer the "University of Michigan" but the Block M looks just as good IMO, I just think it's overkill when the stadium is empty and you see the Block M in the stands as well.
Do you all think it should be a light? Like a block M light directly on the press box between the two main light structures.
I would also love to see a little wall at the top of the stands in UM colors that would help keep the sound in the stadium.
It looks like that T-shirt's been around since the 70's
Definitely had that shirt in the 80s. I'm not sure if it was official MDen merchandise or street vendor style. The best part about my dad in that shirt was he was the minister of our church at the time. The parishioners always got a kick out him wearing it.
I like the University of Michigan one. Make it happen.
My vote.
The boxes on one side have the following stretched all the way across:
- Hail! to the victors valiant
- Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
- Hail! Hail! to Michigan
- The leaders and best!
The boxes on the other side have the following stretched all the way across:
- Hail! to the victors valiant
- Hail! to the conqu'ring heroes
- Hail! Hail! to Michigan,
- The champions of the West!

I have to agree on the above commenter who says the "University of Michigan" is nice but disregard the yellow piping on it. It would look nicer if you would contact Orange County sign company to do the job. I'm a big fan of soccer so this is very important for me.
