Pop Evil replaced the Victors???

Submitted by dahblue on

As many are aware, The Team took the field yesterday to a (previously unknown) local heavy metal band, Pop Evil. Without getting too into the weeds of "are they a good band or not" (one could always check and learn that they play at awesome venues like "O'Shea's Irish Pub"), I'm curious as to thoughts on Dave Brandon's decision to replace the Michigan Marching Band with Pop Evil for the team's entrance.

Now, I'm no historian (I know we have some here) but I assume The Victors has been played for the team's entrance for ages. I imagine this is the first time the team has touched the banner to a song written, when...last week? If Michigan State can rise up to avoid a logo re-vamp, Michigan should be able to rise up to avoid a MMB replacement. There are certain Michigan traditions that shouldn't be tossed away. "The Victors" as the entry song is one such tradition. I realize that on TV, it sounded as if The Victors was playing, but that was after the team had entered.

Am I alone is finding this change to be such an offense? Thoughts of the people...?

Just go back to no RAWK music before the team comes out, and the building up of the "Let's...Go...Blue" chant before the team runs out. I don't know about the players, but from the crowd's standpoint, I was way more pumped up for a game to start when we chanted and cheered the team out onto the field rather than listening to some song then cheering. It felt like we were the ones getting the team ready for the game, not some electronic recording.

Maybe this is an issue of seating and perspective (I was in the south endzone), but I distinctly remember Pop Evil being cut after about half the team had touched the banner. Maybe the band started playing when they ran out and Special K wasn't fast enough to switch from Pop Evil to the marching band. I did have an issue with it right away, though, so I know it wasn't as clear cut as most of you are making it seem (at least from the south-endzone perspective).

The band geek even said they started playing the Victors as soon as the team started to run out of the tunnel. So Special K was a second late on the off switch. I understand the email, you're upset that DJ Scratch & Snif missed his cue to cut the music. Starting a facebook group for this is one of the most pathetic things imaginable. At least this way I can figure out who some of you whack jobs really are.

Out of curiousity, what email address did you send your comments to? I wish to email Brandon a few quick thoughts on the video boards (specifically, the lack of of stats being displayed until halftime). I don't want to email the generic MGoBlue feedback page if there's a better way to contact the athletic department. Thanks.

I don't think a nationally known band needs the Michigan brand to get noticed. You might not know of this band, but as somone who listens to rock I can tell you that this wasn't done to get noticed. Heaven forbid a nationally known band from Michigan would want to write a tribute to a Michigan team. You might not like the song, and you might have some valid points about when it's played, but you don't know what you are talking about regarding the bands motivations.

I love cheese. I once heard that the average American eats about 50 lbs of cheese per year. Clearly, I am eating many people's cheese to make that number work. Howeva, I did not love that at all. I mean, someone would have to eat my share of that video. Sorry.

Who cares if they were a little late on the off switch. Why do we need it at all?

Whatever happened to no music while the team filled the tunnell? The growing anticipation, the rumble of the crowd slowly growing. The "Go! Blue!" chants throughout the stadium, the cowbell renditions. The first sights of the team leading to a big cheer from the west side all before the eruption of pure Michigan Tradition. The team bursting out onto the field to a loud, racous, standing ovation and The Victors beginning as the first winged helmet wearers slap the M Club banner. That's what it is about. No piped in music is needed before, during, or after.

Well, first off Pop Evil is a pretty big band in the Michigan/Detroit area and are far from "unknown." They may seem unknown to some Michigan fans, but no they had a pretty big hit with 100 in a 55 a couple years back, so let's not act as if it's just some random band first off.

Second, the Victors was played. If you remember they did basically the same thing in years past but with THunderstruck by AC/DC. I love AC/DC, but I'd rather have them play a relevant song by a local band. The timing did seem a little off, but the Vicctors was played

Let's set some facts straight as to the popularity of this band - they aren't popular. They don't draw for shit. They couldn't even draw 100 people at a very popular Detroit-area venue a year or two back (that's after their "big hit" you mention). I've dealt with a large amount of concert promotion and Pop Evil is a nothing.

Even as an unknown, they could still be great (of course, they're fucking terrible)...but that's not really the issue. They just don't belong in Michigan Stadium (nor does Neil Diamond for that matter).

Of course not. I've represented a venue that booked them and asked about their sales. Dave Brandon might like them but concert patrons have not. As to the one poster who claims them to be a nationally popular act...um, no. National hits don't play Irish pubs. In any event, it'd just be nice if they resolved the timing so piped in music of any sort isn't able to sully the team's entry.

Did they continue to play Eminem - Lose Yourself during the game? I liked that tradition...especially when the students got the 8 Mile "arm bob" going.

This is Michigan...and this is what we do.

It's pretty serious. This is Michigan football , not some dive bar in Jackson. The song is terrible in every aspect. The chord progression has been used repeatedly, the lyrics are third grade. Why would you think this is good music? Trust me, I know plenty of respected local musicians and they have no knowledge of this band. I'll argue this until it's a memory. Terrible.

This is a band that played to a half capacity crowd in their own hometown in July. I went to high school with one of the band members and he wouldn't know Michigan football if it put his eye makeup on. It's one thing to play a legit rock song that pumps people up, but this song is contrived garbage that spits on Michigan tradition. Hell, maybe if they were alumni I would feel differently. Just disappointment all around with this.

Shane Morris, our 5* QB of the future, has solved this case of rock vs band Rashomon...

@S_Morris12 I recorded this video at the first game, every time I watch it I get the chills #insane #goblue

Just to pile on the "I hate it" side, this song sounds damn dumb to me and I wish somebody had written something better first if we must have rawk.

That being said, what was wrong with the pregame show we had? All it used to take was seeing those maize and blue hats at the mouth of the tunnel to send the crowd into a frenzy.

Pop Evil brainwashing has began. Brian is right in his campaign. The Pop Evil song is terrible. And I heard it about 50 times on the golf course during tailgating. Adam Corrolla has a great riff on how radio industry got people to like the terrible Don Henley song, "Dirty Laundry". It's played so many times you think you like it, but you don't.

As far as timing, I heard the song when the players ran out of the tunnel and it was disappointing. I was on the 10 yard line opposite side of the student section endzone two rows off the field and I heard the Pop Evil song as the players ran on the field. The band played but it was drowned out by garage band mediocrity. This is the halo of music and it must be removed.

My freshman year and Bo's first. MMB was all male. Cheerleaders were all male. No dance team. No music other than MMB and visiting band. No video boards. No Journey, seven Nation Army, Neil Diamond. Can you imagine the debate on a blog in 1969 about the additional gender members of the MMB and cheerleaders???? If the Pop Evil debate is any indication, the threads would go on forever. My 2 cents as a frequent reader of MGOBLOG and infrequent poster--but a 44 year fan: Women as full participants a good thing(stay away from too sexy outfits, since they are students and not hired dancers). Video boards a good thing-go big or go home. No stealing cheers(so delete Penn States chant of Seven Nation Army). No sing alongs that have nothing to do with Michigan Football(delete Journey's South Detroit song, Neil Diamond and Eminem). Classic rock(Led Zep,AC/DC, Metallica) OK, only in places not conflicting with the band(Virginia Tech goes overboard with Enter Sandman). Songs that promote UM are Ok in smal doses, so I guess that makes me in favor of the Pop Evil "In the Big House"--also bought it on iTunes. Other views appreciated.

So when people who hate the song go crazy and tell everyone else what to like, I just don't get it. Evidently plenty of people like the band, or at least the song, considering I heard it over 20 times while tailgaiting with people singing along with it. For what it's worth, I was in section 9 and I heard the Victors playing when the team came out. A little late with the pop evil cutoff, yes. I personally don't like the song, but just fix the timing issue and I'm okay with it because it sure jacked up plenty of others around me. Just like that atrocious Journey shit. I despise anything Journey! It doesn't mean they shouldn't play it because I hate it and my three friends at the game hate it too. The Victors is still the field enterance song, and I'm confident it always will be.
