Sam Webb/Det News column on 2013 RB W. Shallman

Submitted by GunnersApe on

Sam Webb interviews CC RB Wyatt Shallman.

Key points:

"Michigan is looking at me as a pure tailback. Cincinnati and Syracuse are looking at me as a hybrid tailback, but also as a wide receiver where I can split out and kind of do the multiple purpose thing. I'm just trying to do everything."

"They envision me as a big tailback like (New York Giants standout) Brandon Jacobs," he said of the Wolverines. "They want me to play tailback. That sounds great. I really want to."

"My parents are both crazy Michigan fans,"

I've watched this kid progress over the last few years. He's the real deal. Out of all the former Shamrock standouts his work ethic is most similar to Mike Martin. I can't wait to see him go blue.

Interesting prospect, this kid.  if he plays tailback, I'm guessing he will be bigger than Ron Dayne by the time that he gets his first carry.  But 4.7 in the 40 is slow, and it's not freakishly fast for his size.  Size is nice to have as a running back, but there's a reason why Will Carr in the backfield didn't work out.  And at 6'3", he doesn't have the bowling ball build that Ron Dayne had.   If he goes to Michigan, he'll join a roster full of guys who aren't known for their ability to take it to the house.  We have a short yardage guy in Stephon Hopkins and we'll probably have a fullback too.  If we miss out on Brionte Dunn this year, we need an OMG shirtless 5* guy in 2013.

First of all, Shallman and Hopkins are three years apart, so that matters not.  Also, everyone who has seen this kid play (including the coaches) think he's the real deal.  I just watched his video, and he looked bigger and faster than most on the field and he was a sophomore.  He's got 2 full years before he's even a true freshman and if he can get his 40 time down by even a tenth in that time he'll be very fast for his size.

Holy smokes, what a beast!  And only a junior this fall.  With his kind of athletic ability (4.7 40, 38 inch vertical leap, and 4.1 shuttle time) and size, you find a scholarship for him.  He could play a number of positions very, very easily.  RB, FB, LB, DE.  The coaches were very smart to offer him early.  He looks like a great north-south runner, but showed some pretty decent lateral moves on some plays.  And I love that he's getting Barwis training already.

Hope to welcome Wyatt to the Michigan family very soon.

This kid intrigues me, he's like a white Ron Dayne.  I guess manball will be back in full effect.  I must say I like the idea of a white bruiser in the backfield for the next few years ( I'm black, so don't pull the racism card).  Sounds like a great kid who clearly understands the Michigan tradition and rivalry with tOSU.  I'm not sure how many kids we'll take in the 2013 class, but you can bet it's gonna be a great one with Morris leading the way.  I know we'll have some bumps in the road with coach Hoke but how can anyone deny this guy?  He's like a teddy bear version of Bo, I'm so happy with how things turned out, while admittingly I was against his hiring.  How wrong I was!

Tater

This looks like a guy who shares with another TB, gets a few carries in the first half, and runs over people and drags LB's in the fourth quarter when they start to get tired.
