The concept of Legends Jerseys seemed to me to imply that no current player would be as great as any past player, and that they should always be compared to the guys who'd gone before rather than create their own legacy.
I see #16, I'll always associate it with flying dreadlocks and a giant grin racing down the field. #2 will have a rose in his teeth and be making a one-handed interception against MSU. #21 is striking the Heisman pose. Let guys create their own legacies, don't force them to be a footnote to somebody else.

Flip Notre Dame & Penn State. Little impact competitively, your geography issue there is solved.

And was slightly disappointed in Armada. I know my expectations were probably excessively high, but it felt insubstantial, especially in terms of characters.
I'll still buy whatever he writes next. Sophomore slump is a real thing.

OK, I'll bite. Why?
This is college athletics. We are not putting sports in to receive money back out as in the NFL or NBA. Rather, we're putting money in to get sports and the community that grows around sports back out. As long as we're making enough money to fund the sports programs and hopefully contribute to the University's general fund, then who cares whether or not some other school is getting $1M or $10M more a year from adidas than Michigan is getting from Nike?
We're building palaces for Olympic sports, so at some point the athletic department is going to run out of places to spend the money. Make the fans happy with good-looking gear, make the players and coaches happy with a brand they love and leave good enough alone. Chasing the almighty incremental intercollegiate athletic dollar is what turned Dave Brandon into a anthropomorphic giraffe puppeteer who has to figure out how to compete with Amazon and Walmart.

It's also the difference between soccer fans and soccer supporters. The fomer is a somewhat passive "Yay team, good job!" spectating, and the other is wholehearted engagement in the game and attempting to influence the outcome by channeling passion to your team while knocking the other team off their game by (virtually) whatever means necessary.

Even as a rabid DCFC supporter, I think the mindset of "all soccer fans should agree to do X, because Grow The Game" is one of the things that's held soccer back in America for so long.
Support your club. Love your club. Grow your club. I think that having fourth-tier or lower clubs in Pontiac, Rochester Hills, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Muskegon in addition to Detroit is actually a very healthy thing, even though I'm contractually obligated as a member of the Northern Guard to remind them and their laughable "supporters" that they suck. Some of these clubs will survive, some of them will not, some of them will thrive and grow into something bigger. At the end of the day, we'll have an ecosystem where otherwise, we'd have (maybe) one bigger DCFC that's a single failure point for "soccer" in the region.

With all love and respect for the coach and the program, if you're a top-flight WR, why would you commit to Michigan? Historically, Harbaugh's offenses have been great if you're a QB, tight end or running back.
As for his WR history, he had competent guys like Doug Baldwin and Ryan Whalen at Stanford and good-but-not-greats in Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Manningham and late-career Boldin and Moss at the Niners. He hasn't really shown either the inclination or avocation to really coach up a great wide receiver at any of his stops that I can think of.
The upside is that his offenses don't tend to need world-beating WRs the way some others do. So I think we can take the solid guys all day long, get a guy who wants to wear #1 every few years and be just fine.

I wish there were some way to code the MGoBoard software so that when a commenter submits a reply on a recruiting post, the equivalent of a "WATCH THIS AD BEFORE VIDEO PLAYS" interstitial popped up reminding the commenter that they're talking about a high school kid making one of the most important decisions he'll ever make; that we have a tiny fraction of a percent of understanding about this kid's life and situation and does the commenter really, really want to continue with their planned post?
Are you sure?
No, seriously, are you really sure?
Would you post this if he were reading over your shoulder?
How about if his mother were sitting next to you?

Always hated the Legends jerseys. Precluded creating new "legends" and implies that the current guys just aren't as good as the former guys.
I mean, credit to Gerald Ford for being a solid player and even in the 1940s making team MVP as the center was pretty impressive, but say Desmond Morgan has a Butkus Award-quality season or something. We'll never look at 48 on the field and think "Aw yeah, remember that great Morgan season when he decapitated Cardale Jones at the goal line?" Instead, it'll be "Pardoned Nixon. Decent guy. Lost to a peanut farmer."

I hope that MGoBlog has upped its italics font storage space on the server or you're going to run out halfway through the season thanks to Drevno pressers.

My ongoing efforts to get you to a Detroit City FC game have failed (as far as I know) and instead you're going to follow a team that doesn't even have an actual league? I get geographic loyalty and all, but you wouldn't go to EMU rather than UM games just because you lived a few blocks closer to Ypsi on Washtenaw.
As for your Michigan rooting interests, your Wolverine contingent for DCFC this season includes Colin McAtee, William Mellors-Blair and Andre Morris plus former greats Latife Alashe, Zeke Harris, and former UM captain and current Pioneer head coach Kevin Taylor. Maybe you can carpool?
(Oh, and the instant he graduated Sparty's former captain Ryan Keener fled Lansing United to come play for DCFC as well this season.)
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Because the only thing that's||
Because the only thing that's a remotely comparable experience to being in a good soccer supporters' section is being in a good college student section. All the stuff that makes those so much more fun than the boring people sitting elsewhere in the stadium is magnified. Then, add flags and banners gratuitously insulting the opposing team.
|18 weeks 6 days ago||I prefer to have rooted for||
As a fan, of course that's true. But in making and enforcing these rules, the NCAA's blatantly putting school and fan interests over those of the players.
Would Denard have had more success playing for non-Borgesian OC? Almost certainly. (Remember the "al borges denard fusion cuisine is not made to order" MGoBlog tag?)
The NCAA says that it's committed to "The collegiate model of athletics in which students participate as an avocation, balancing their academic, social and athletics experiences." Making a young man forgo a year of that avocation just because he decided he'd rather go to a different academic, social and/or athletic experience puts the lie to that statement in my mind.

There are two people from whom I received an email in my life that made me feel truly special. The first was Vint Cerf, which was like getting a phone call from Alexander Graham Bell.
The other was Terry Pratchett -- he was an early USENET aficionado and I'd sent him an email after I discovered his books, he responded very kindly. (I do remember one line from it -- I'd apologized for not knowing whether it was good manners to email him, he responded in part with "It's OK, I don't have manners. I have mannerisms.")
His death opens the "Greatest living writer in the English language" race up for meaningful competition again.

Moving Pictures is a fairly simple standalone as well, as is Monstrous Regiment. Unseen Academicals is relatively standalone but IMO ties so much into his latter series of books that deal with prejudice -- Fifth Elephant, Thud, Snuff, even Raising Steam -- that it benefits from being read together with them.

Calling Gardner "experienced" minimizes how jacked around that poor guy was:
Year 0: QB (medical redshirt) for RichRod
Year 1: QB for Borges
Year 2: Wide receiver then QB for Borges
Year 3: QB for Borges
Year 4: QB for Nussmeier
He never had two full seasons in a row in the same role for the same offensive coordinator at Michigan. The fact that he was functional at all is a testament to his adaptability.

Except that it's not really a "transfer" when it comes to grad school, right? You''ve gotten your degree, you graduate, you select another institution for graduate school. You wouldn't say that you graduated from Michigan with a B.A. and then transferred to Duke for law school.

Not an MGoLawyer, but I think Brian's pretty safe under the "rhetorical hyperbole" test for defamation law.
As an aside, US courts have held all of these words/phrases to be protected statements of opinion and not defamatory statements of fact: "idiot," "raving idiot," "stupid," "moron," "nincompoop," "raving maniac," "pitiable lunatic," "wacko," "nut job," "crazy" and "crank." So, there's plenty of words left for further discussion of Dave Brandon.
