My first Michigan v. Ohio State game in Columbus was in 1980. I was 13. I went with my Dad and older brother who was 25. We had a great time at the game, which was close, but Michigan won 9-3. I wore a Michigan baseball hat and a maize and blue scarf to the game. On the way out of the stadium a random student aged person in Ohio State gear walked right up to me and punched me in the side of the head - which sent me flying. They guy just kept right on walking as my dad and brother helped me up. I got up stunned, my head throbbing and I was of course, crying. As we continued to walk I took off my hat and scarf and stuffed them in my jacket. My older brother barked at me - "put on your hat and scarf. Be proud of Michigan. The next person that touches you...we're all going to fight." As a 13 year old I wasn't thinking about fighting. I just wanted to get to our car alive. I was terrified. But I understood where my brother was coming from and so I put on my hat, wiped away my tears and held my throbbing head high. I have had an increased hatred for those bastards ever since. Fuck the Bucks! Go Blue! |
