More Importantly

At the 2:00 mark of the HUDL video, is a fine looking Back Judge.  My crew does most of the IMG games and I am the Back Judge.

Fun times, cool story Bro...it is fun doing the IMG games.

That doesn't happen.  We

That doesn't happen.  We don't have rooting interests, that's BS.  You would have to try really hard to throw a game and it would be obvious.   ALL the other officials would have to be in on it, you can't throw in a vacum, it's a crew.

What does happen is you or others question what you think you saw.  Hence the "conference".  There have been times I have ruled, then thought about it and decided, "welp, I fucked that up".  Then I confrence with my crew chief and we decide how to fix it if we can.  Sometimes we can't fix it, it's life.  BUT I do NOT look for a make-up call, that is just as bad.

So you can take the percieved moral high ground and determine that you would be perfect as an official.  I actually do it and it's not as easy you make it seem.  I can assure you the MI/OSU game was not determined by bias...poor positioning, poor judgement perhaps but they weren't biased going in.

An easy explaination is the guy called what he thought he saw, sometimes once committed it's harder to reverse than to stick with the initial call.  There is probably some Pych explaination for it but I have lived it, it's very hard to reverse in front of thousands of screaming people.

I don't know.  I was taken

I don't know.  I was taken aback by the comments that suggest I was a poor official for wanting to know if Michigan had any targets at IMG.  Your answer above was awesome, thanks.

I know no one gives a shit, but I pride myself on being the best Back Judge in my association, perhaps the suggestion that I was somehow comprimised struck a nerve.

Displying bias as an officail is the worst charge that can be leveled.

I don't, just curious to know

I don't, just curious to know if any IMG guys are Michigan targets.  That's all.  Also, its a Spring game, no play clock, coaches on the field, no kicking, no score.  The game usually takes forever as each offense takes 40+ plays each.

So, no, not much going on at all.  But thanks for the advise.

WTH?  Sneeking a peak at a

WTH?  Sneeking a peak at a lineman during a run play (I am a Back Judge), somehow makes me a poor offical and that I don't call the game fairly?  Wow, ok.

ALL the players are good, its IMG.

I was curious to know if any of them were Michigan targets, not to determine which way to throw the game.  Usually I don't know anyone, a spring "game" that means nothing might be a good way to notice a play or two.

Good points, TBH I had to

Good points, TBH I had to look up who they were playing.  I usually don't know anything about either team and officiate as you suggest.  I know some who don't, they study and read about coaches, players and tendancies etc...I agree with you on this point, I think it introduces bias.

But this is a Spring game, no kicking and usually each offense gets "x" number of plays.  In fact they probably won't keep score, so I think it's ok to sneek a look at a few linemen.

I will get Hudl video after

I will get Hudl video after the game...perhaps I could share some clips if folks are interested?

I didn't see that post.

I didn't see that post.  Nope, I'm a Michigan guy, LSA '92, moved down here 7 years ago, been officiating in Manatee/Sarasota county for 6 years.  I do all the 7v7 tournaments as well, get to see hundreds of D1 guys, mostly it's fun, sometimes it's a bitch.

Thanks for th info, It will be hard for me to watch the line as I am a Back Judge, but I will sneek a look.

Sleeper

I had a co-worker that would stay up all night reading books.  Apparently his house/Apartment was so crammed with books you had to walk through it on a trail he made.  Anyway, he would stay up all night and read, so at work he would sleep.  Not just catch a cat nap on his desk, he would bring a pillow to a meeting, A MEETING, and lay down in the corner and sleep during the meeting.  In cubeville you could here him snoring for 5 or 6 rows over...at first is was funny.  Then you realize he is getting paid the same as you.

Well he looked awesome,

Well he looked awesome, physically.  Then he started throwing passes...many were intercepted.  It may be the shitty coaching they get in the club leagues, IDK?  He had a strong arm, he looked like he was solid and strong his feet looked like other good QB's.  (I am not an evaluator).

Hoke Helmet

I have a signed Hoke Helmet in my office (home office).  I purchased it when he signed on...I had very high hopes and thought he just might pull us out of the gutter.

I will keep it and alwasy display it.  It's part of our history.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson

So I watched him participate in 5 or 6, 7 v 7 games at IMG in Regionals a month ago.  He looks VERY impressive and threw many interceptions.  I was the White Hat so I was right behind him and could see his reads...while I am no QB, it looked as though he was being told/coached to throw a designated route/guy each throw so perhaps it's not fair.

I'm sure our coaching staff can fix whatever ails him...but its hard to get over he is a mountain of a man at his young age.

Well, I should see the Plant

Well, I should see the Plant TE on Friday night, and as a BJ he will be my key all night so should get some good looks.

So we just went over that

So we just went over that type of call in Officials camp.  It comes down to a subjective determination by the White hat (crew chief).  "intent to decieve" is a subjective foul.

If Butt would have delayed his shift 1 more second as to not look like he was subbed out...maybe then it works.

Awesome, thanks.  That's

Awesome, thanks.  That's easy.

No I am not black.  I work Back Judge, the guy he was talking to was David Jones.  They were most likely talking becasue David was in the NFL for a little while as a backup WR and he was on the sideline.  I don't get to talk to folks much because I am in the middle of the field.

Bias, almost never.  What MAY

Bias, almost never.  What MAY happen (I am guilty of this).  When 1 team has gotten the shaft of a rather shaky call (for or against), I do apply a bias to either go "easy" or look close depending on the situation...hence many call this the makup call.  That does happen, in my experience about 1 every 3 games (football).

Anticipated result is probably the most called.  Look a the position of the official in the GIF, in my opinion he is out of position and has no vision to deterine if a foul has occured, he suspected one had occured and called it.  Once called in Basketball, can they "wipe it off"; in football I can, and do, after a conference.

Rock stars, rare..our association kicks them out.  Others..maybe not.

I'm a ref

I don't suck and I don't screw teams over.  I call what I see; influenced by my associations philisophy and my training.  Both of those things are meant to let them play...and not to determine the outcome unless it is necessary.  That being said, mistakes happen.  The intensity of the situation does effect ref's.  We get caught up in the emotion and excitement sometimes.

So...until you have done it STFU, you not of what you speak.  I dare you, take the NFHS test for High School football, you will fail.  I have a 90+ page book of rules and enforcements to memorize, plus a 90+ page book of mechanics (where to be on the field, in every situation), plus a case book of 100 pages or so...

This is my pre-snap duties for a normal play, BEFORE any action takes place.

Back Judge

  1. Always positioned deeper than the deepest defensive back, normally taking an original position no closer than 15 yds deep and no more than 20 yards deep.

  2. When the ball is on an inbounds line (hashmark), position yourself no wider than the opposite upright.

  3. Know your eligible receiver responsibilities.

  4. Echo referee's down signal verbally and with an overhead hand signal back to the Line Judge and the Linesman.

  5. Responsible for the 25 second count. The PIAA mechanic is to raise and hold one arm straight overhead if the team has not snapped the ball at 20 seconds after the ready have elapsed; lower your arm at the snap or when the team has committed delay of the game.

  6. If the field clock malfunctions, you will keep the game time and the referee will keep the 25 second count.

  7. Responsible for counting defensive team. Confirm count with Line Judge using an extended fist; once in agreement, drop hand. Observe that replaced players leave the field immediately.

  8. Key the tight end on the strong side. If a balanced formation, key the end to the Line Judge's side. On runs on either side of field, move to a position so that the runner is between you and the Linesman/Line Judge, observing blocks ahead of runner.

  9. On out of bounds plays. especially in the team areas, move into the area of the dead ball and assist other officials in maintaining order.

  10. With the Line Judge, echo the Referee's signal (winding the clock) when he starts the clock

  11. The Back Judge has responsibility for the end line.

These types of plays are why

These types of plays are why mechanics were changed.  The Umpire (the guys signalling a turnover) does not do this now in modern mechanics.  He signals a "punch" (TD) or drops a blue bean bag (loose ball) to the wing, HE does NOT determine the outcome of the play.  The wings have complete authority to signal TD, Spot (one hand up) or start sorting out possesion with the Umpires help.

This is correct.  My crew

This is correct.  My crew always does this unless it's a scrimmage kick inside the 5, then an exact spot is preferred.

I'm an official, so take it

I'm an official, so take it easy on me.  So, the concept is what we all know.  The spot of the ball is the most forward portion of the ball when the player becomes down.  So sometimes you have a fast whistle and the ball is spotted as soon as the pile moves backward.  Other times you have a slow whistle and the ball comes out "after" momentum is stopped.

In your case you refer to officials mis-identifing the spot.  Sometimes this is very hard as you have other responsibilites at the same time. The wing official is moving downfield to cover the deep reciever, the ball is dumped to the flat, now the offical has to work back to this spot after running his ass of to get downfield..so, not making excuses, but sometimes it's hard to get the correct spot.

On a scrimmage or free kick, I ALWAYS spot the ball on yard marker (no factional spots), so we start a series on a marker, unless the ball is inside the 5..then an exact spot is preferred.

Many Umpires do this on a first down as well.  Also, the wing is encouraged to spot the ball in an unambiguos psoition if it is close.  So, let's say the wing determines the runner made the first down, he is ENCOURAGED to spot the ball as foward as possible to eliminate controversy and if the runner is short, spot it well short, unfortunately this sometimes looks really bad on TV.  The rule of thumb is, if he earned it, give it.

I agree with your point on

I agree with your point on youth leagues.  I guess I was think more of school related programs, Middle School and non-Varsity levels in High Schools.

I don't think the poeple who pay the insurance premiums care if the players are using proper form tackling techniques.

I shall change my name again everytime I move...I guess.

I agree,  The expense of the equipment, insurance, travel for 55 vs. 15 and injuries I think will pressure programs/states to move to 7on7 for younger players and only have full contact at he JV/Varsity level.

Just my 2 cents.

Even in Florida we have school districts limiting the exposure of non-varsity athletes by reducing the number of games and having games WITHOUT kicking.  I did a regular season game last year, JV, with NO KICKING, offense started at the 35, "punts" were 35 yards, automatically.

So there was a kid/player who

So there was a kid/player who kept taunting Cam.  He was from a Florida team (Miami I think), anyway he kept calling Cam out, doing a Gator Chomp (not sure why) etc...until finally Cam walked over to him (mid game) and I couldn't hear the entire conversation but the jist of it was .. there are many people here watching you, your recruiting "stock" is not helped by acting like a jerk.

Wienke also shared some college/pro stories about teammates etc..nothing earth shattering, just "hey, this one guy used to ...." kind of stuff.

An intersting tidbit, the Florida recruiting guy for 247 sports, is the guy that assembles the Team Tampa roster.  So, it works pretty well for him, he selects who is on the team, then gets exclusive acces to them all summer to report on.

Also, it was Africa hot.

Notable achievements of the 563 graduates from the 2009-2012 classes:

  • 30% committed to a top school as ranked by the U.S. News & World Report
  • 326 grads (nearly 60%) have committed to a D-I university (less than 6% of student-athletes nationally play sports at the D-I, II or III collegiate level).
  • Average of $1.2 million of total scholarships for freshmen year of college (less than 2% of student-athletes nationally earn a college scholarship)
This ^^

I get around to the greater Sarasota/Tampa area all HS season long, and it's just on a different scale.  Spring ball is just like college, the sport is year-round, coaching is year-round.  We do clinics almost every month, with HS teams as "scrimmage" teams (games with no kicking).

Not to mention it's hard to go outside and work on 7-on-7 drills in hip deep snow.

BTW, Madden 7on7 starts in April for Regionals..Finals at IMG in Sarasota, see you there.

Better?

Better?

I do High School games in

I do High School games in Florida.  We have to have a Sherriff deputy on the sidelines at all times we are on the field.

My crew and I were assulted after a spring game...a friggin spring game!

What Florida FHSAA has done is at the high school level if a kid gets kicked out of a game he/she looses the next 6 games (of any sport)..so if the season is over and the guy plays basketball he is suspended for 6 basketball games.

But the youth leagues are BY FAR the worst...there is no governing body with authority.  What can they do?  Really.

This month's issue of Referee Magazine has a detaied article about the assult that happened in Sarasota last year, if your interested.

FWIW, I work Umpire and Back Judge.

Not in FL

Well, it's not valid in the games my crew works.  Usually you have at least 2 if not 3 covering officials in 5 man mechanics and in college they work 7 man so you have 3 to 5 covering officials.  Dead ball unsportsman like 15 yards and a first down.  Second offense in Florida is removal from the game...an ejection from any game results in an immediate 6 game suspension that can extend into the next year (if you have one).  You can appeal but it takes 2 weeks to hear the appeal.

I hear the same meme about holding as well, but this is for a different thread.

He can keep on blocking,

He can keep on blocking, legally.  It's only an immediate dead ball when the ball carrier looses his lid.  For others the play ends then the player leaves for a play.
