You guys bashed me pretty hard the other night, but I’m a big boy, I can take it.
And not to cry over spilled milk, but the question of the day was whether Miami "touched" the puck or "possessed" it leading up to the disallowed goal. The rule states that Miami must possess the puck not merely touch it before the whistle blows. Steve Piotrowski (Director of Officials), supposedly told a Daily reporter that Miami "touched" the puck, not controlled it.
So not only did the referee blow the original call, the explanation was also botched.
I've included the NCAA rule so we can finally get that story straight:
c. The appropriate on-ice official shall use a “delayed whistle” when a
foul is committed against the team in possession of the puck, thereby
HR-50 RULE 4 / PENALTIES
postponing the stoppage of play until the offending team shall have
possession and control of the puck.
The last player to control the puck, other than the goalkeeper, is the
last player to be deemed in possession of the puck. Control of the puck is
defined as the act of propelling the puck with the stick, hand or skate.
Possession and control is not a rebound off the goalkeeper, an opposing
player, the goal or the boards or any incidental contact with the body or
equipment of an opposing player. Batting the puck with the hand or kicking
the puck is considered to be controlling the puck. Touching the puck (e.g.,
poke check or deflection) is not considered control of the puck.
During a delayed penalty, a goal may not be scored by the penalized team
as a result of a deflection off of a penalized team player.
This team has tremendous skating ability, but sometimes lacks in puck management decisions. In simpler terms, the team coughs the puck up way too much. That has nothing to do with overall effort and skill. It has just contributed to their undoing way too many times this season. My only complaint about the fans is that very few showed up.
Everyone knew the officials we're calling it tight, especially on MIchigan. Yes, the penalties were called in part by lousy officiating, but others were due to undisciplined play. Maybe the words "intramural hacks" are slightly too strong.
I agree I may have been slightly too critical, but you need to have thicker skin. I may have implied that they sometimes played like hacks, but didn't imply they were hacks. Yes, Hunwick saved their butts more often than not.Ok, saying "I have my head up my ass" is childish at best.
Trueferblue22:
1) Ok, I apologize about the font and my misspelled word. I'll wash my mouth out with soap.
2) "You'd sometimes think..." is miles away from calling them hacks. I, in fact, acknowledged they were future NHLers.
3) Miami at times made us look bad With their effective forechecking, cycling, and general puck possession. I'm not ashamed of our play, it's just that there is room for improvement between now and the beginning of next season.
4) I've been a supporter of Michigan hockey since the days of Karl Bagnell, Punch Cartier and that tiny 5-5 goaltender, Robbie Moore. In the days before Yost, you could smell Coach Renfrew's cigars in every crevice of the barn on Hill Street. But I am ashamed of the lack of support at Fort Wayne the last two nights. Do me a favor, Sean. Take two aspirin, maybe you'll feel better in the morning.
Next time I'm in town from Richmond, Virginia, I'd love to see them skate. Congratulations for all their success. I'm already looking forward to 2014. Now go have a Labatt's 50 Ale on me.
With the ability to catch the ball in traffic he could still grow into an efficient tight end, despite his lack of speed. He could become another Jim Mandich or perhaps Jerame Tuman. There's nothing like having a dependable third-down "possession" receiver. He'll probably grow to 6-5 or 6-6 and could even become a dynamite strong safety. In any case, he's closer to a blue chip than a sleeper. He's already a playmaker.
