Could've missed it, but didn't see any Pete Vignier mentions in this thread. Also surprised at lack of love for Colin Dill.

Yes, they're in fine position to make the playoffs, but losing Zetterberg might change all of that.
By the numbers, the Wings are 6 point out of third place in their Atlantic Division. Top 3 teams from Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions make the playoffs, as do the next two best teams from the Eastern Conference. Montreal and Toronto both have 70 points, but the Wings have played 2 fewer games than Toronto and 1 fewer game than Montreal. They could easily climb into the top 3 of the division with a hot streak. Tampa Bay has 71 points and also has played two more games than the Wings.
That being said, the Wings are right now just one point ahead of three teams vying for the final wild card spot (Ottawa, Columbus, Washington), while two other teams (Carolina and New Jersey) have 61 points.
A solid March and April will get the Wings into the playoffs. But just how they'll put together a solid 6 weeks is tough to figure out with all the injuries they're facing.

Hoping for a long match. Would love to catch the end when I wake up. Would be cool to see an all Swiss final.

It was a well-done documentary.
Perhaps the highlight for me was seeing clips of Cobo Arena configured with an ice rink, although there wasn't much footage. Anyone know how often and for what purposes Cobo was used as an ice arena?

Nice to see Larry Henry on the documentary.
I haven't heard anything yet regarding who will take over as the new football play by play man, but he would seem to be a great candidate. Long association with both M football and basketball during the 80s-90s, great voice, and a lot of energy/enthusiasm in the booth.

Michigan's status as "poster child" for Nike during the late 90's had more to do with Michigan than with Nike. Michigan was coming off the Fab Five era when they started with Nike in the mid-90's, before any of the scandal associated with that era was known. They were also (gasp!) winning football games and were still considered a powerhouse in the conference and nationally. While the basketball program appears to be back on track, football is, at best, a middle-of-the-pack conference team and has been for some time. How can any company market a program as top notch when the results plainly don't support that?

For me, nothing will compare to the 2002 regional at Yost. Atmosphere was electric. When Michigan overcame a third period deficit against Denver to win the regional in 2002, the building was shaking. It has been well-documented on this site in years past, but that was an incredible environment for a sporting event. Still ranks ahead of almost every football game I've attended since I started going in the mid-80's, and I haven't missed any important ones.

Thanks for posting. Always great to see the online repository of Michigan moments expanded.
Haven't been able to find video of what was I believe the 1995 Michigan-Purdue football game, which I believe ended with Michigan winning 5-0. Was at that game and recall that it was the worst weather I've ever experienced at a game in Ann Arbor. Would love to see a video of that to compare it to my memories of the event.
|12 weeks 1 day ago||The thing that has to be most||
The thing that has to be most concerning to Michigan hockey fans is another third-period lead squandered. Granted, it's early in the season, and a one-goal lead is the most miniscule of margins, but it's another example in a growing portfolio of late-game lead changes, not in our favor.

Does anyone know what the plans are for the two games on 12/31?
I know they are playing games at 1 and 3:30, but do we know which players will be playing in which game?
Thanks in advance.

|16 weeks 1 day ago||Yost...||
Great footage of Yost in the glory days (which I generally define as 1996-2003). You can attribute the decline in intensity all you want to renovations and reconfiguration, but it's not just that. Yost is no longer a place where students come first and foremost to watch hockey. Now it's dancing and nonsense and costumes. There was some of that back then, but hockey was center stage. Not anymore.
|16 weeks 5 days ago||Worse than any other venue is||
Worse than any other venue is Yost. Smaller, intimate venue where the band dominates, but we've seen more piped in music at Yost the past two seasons with the new scoreboard and sound system. It doesn't happen often, but even once is one time too many. Best band at any M event. Should be them or bust.

Question unrelated to booing: were there a lot of empty seats yesterday? I know tickets were very cheap on secondary market and plentiful. Haven't seen the actual attendance issue discussed here so am assuming it was almost full but wanted confirmation.

|17 weeks 2 days ago||As a student during the late||
As a student during the late 90s/early 00s, I can attest to the fact that there was no venue quite like Yost. As was detailed extensively and excellently in a post on this site a year or two ago, the NCAA regional in '02 involving St. Cloud and Denver was the most intense weekend I've ever been to at Yost or any other sporting venue. The building shook when Michigan took the lead over DU in the 3rd period on Saturday night.
What bothers me isn't necessarily the physical changes to the student section, the overhanging luxury seating, etc., it's the lack of effort from the students. The half-assed attempts to keep the CYA chant alive are a prime example. What's the point of the chant? For the other students around to hear it, or for the arena as a whole to hear it, or for the player going into the box to hear it? If it's anything but the first of those three alternatives, it would seem logical to play a cat-and-mouse game with the band, and wait until they play their "CYA defense" as instructed, and then go ahead with the chant. Not too difficult, it seems.
And while I completely understand the attempts by the Athletic Dept. to rid Yost of vulgarities, I don't get the other changes to the ambiance. The band conducter's dance was a huge crowd favorite at the end of a game we were undoubtedly going to win, and apparently that disappeared due to external pressure. I've heard anecdotally that it was seen as "showing up" opposing teams. Nonsense. Who knows if the current band/leader would even be open to such a thing, but it's just one more item that used to be special and has disappeared.
Other chants, as has been commented upon earlier, used to be more creative. I recall hearing, at least once to an opposing player and at least once to a diminutive official, the black-hole, funnel, etc. chant modified to something along the lines of dwarf-midget-you're just short, you're just short...What the student section appears to have morphed into is a prop comic, as opposed to a traditional stand-up comic who relies on wit and creativity.
I know I'll take heat for the last comment, but it's worth noting. More intensity from the students leads to more intensity from the alumni/non-student fan base, and, in theory, a more difficult place to play for opponents and a greater advantage for our Wolverines, which is all we really want.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||Looked like a very||
Looked like a very questionable call on the penalty shot, but those breaks go for you and against you and seem to even out over the course of a season (or over the course of a two-week period, as you point out re: the UNH call against us).
I don't recall the Ryan Miller game, but the outshoot-your-opponents-by-a-3-to-1-margin-and-lose-by-a-goal routine was a hallmark of the Red Wings teams in the mid 90s until the early 2000s. There were years they didn't lose playoff games often, but it seems like whenever they did, they had outshot their opponents by a staggering margin and still managed to lose the game (in OT). If I recall correctly, that was the same day Michigan was edged out in OT in the Frozen Four by the Gophers. Not a good day for this hockey fan.
|18 weeks 4 days ago||Couldn't agree more. 3:30||
Couldn't agree more. 3:30 games are preferable when the weather is nice, early-season, but I'd take a noon conference home game every time if I had the choice. Not as much aversion to late games on the road.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Glad to see some coverage of||
Glad to see some coverage of the hockey team. Hopefully they can continue their strong play this weekend. Even though UMass-Lowell and BU are no longer top-10 teams, they're good opponents, and wins over both of those teams would be huge come tournament selection time, as I imagine both will be "teams under consideration." Hopefully the Yost crowd shows up this weekend; no football game to use as an excuse.
|21 weeks 1 day ago||Surprised to see this, since||
Surprised to see this, since I don't believe season ticket costs have increased over the past couple of seasons at Yost.
With the Tigers game on at 8, I'd be surprised if there weren't a bunch of empty seats tonight at Yost (perhaps no more than the usual 1/4 empty arena we see in October).
Is the Athletic Department using "dynamic pricing" for single-game hockey tickets too? I was under the impression that was limited to football.

|25 weeks 1 day ago||While I agree that having a||
While I agree that having a national powerhouse join the GLI field is nice in theory, the timing of the tournament has resulted in depleted rosters from top national schools, including Michigan, for years. Every year, top players are invited to the World Junior Championships, leaving the GLI rosters looking like bare-bones versions of the team that takes the ice the rest of the year. So even though I agree with you that I'd like to see some big-name schools come into the area and participate in the tournament, what I'd really like is to see the tournament moved to a time period where the rosters won't be decimated by World Junior invites.
