I would like to have…

I would like to have Espresso Royale, Dinersty, and Middle Kingdom back...

The Name of the Wind by…

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.  That's the first book in a planned fantasy trilogy.  The second book, The Wise Man's Fear is also great.  Still waiting on the third book however (it's been over 10 years). He is an amazing writer and has built an incredibly rich and detailed world. It's got magic, music, politics, and mythology.  One of my favorite books of all time.

Also, +1 to the Red Rising series--a ton of fun.

This is like a gut punch.  I…

This is like a gut punch.  I spent so many hours/dollars at the place during my time in A2 and I associate so many good memories there.  I remember my RA introduced us to it and referred to it as "Cafe Pretentious," but I thought it was the perfect place to study, chill, and hang out.  I'll miss that place a lot.

I think Michigan should win…

I think Michigan should win this game, but I am concerned.  MSU has nothing much to play for except this game, and a win would validate their season (at least in their own eyes).  D'antonio will have his team motivated and ready to play, and I hope and pray that our staff can prepare our boys mentally and physically for their best shot.  I expect one supremely obnoxious trick play by MSU, and I hope to hell we can snuff it out.

As an administrative/tech…

As an administrative/tech issue, the Athletic link isn't working.  On a positive note, the landing page for the broken link has a .gif of Dikembe Mutombo wagging his finger.

 I am cautiously optimistic…

I am cautiously optimistic that UM can and should win.  That being said, I have felt that way for most of the past 10 years with not many wins to show for it.  That is because Mark D'antonio, for all his smug, smirking, graceless, and disrespek-laden assholery, is a great coach.  He gets his players emotionally ready for the game, and has a great gameplan, with a couple of ridiculous bush-league trick plays that ALWAYS F@*!KING WORK.  Basically, he wills his team to win.  UM needs that type of resolve and execution to be able to pull it off this year.  Otherwise it will be yet another year of "coulda, shoulda...didn't."

Every time I have a thought…

Every time I have a thought like that in advance of a game, that game almost always gets uncomfortably close.  So, no...Shea and the starters for 4 full quarters.

What a terrific post

Seth, what a thoughtful and well-written piece.  I love the analogy and feel the exact same way.  Regardless of what happens tonight, a tip of the cap to the team for the journey they have given us this year.

The President Is the Government

So by urging employers to fire/suspend their employees if they choose to exercise their free speech rights, that sounds like governmental limitation to me, or at the very least an attempt to limit speech.

My first UM Game

I was a freshman and it was my first ever game.  I had such lousy seats, all I saw was his feet go up in the end zone and I had to wait to see if he caught it based on the reaction of the crowd.  One of my most happy and enduring sports memories ever.  Also, I'm old...

Live on the Eastside

I agree that if you are working in Bellevue, then living on the Eastside will make your life easier, since traffic in Seattle is atrocious.  Like, serious Hulk Smash road rage bad, and its not getting any better.  With that, living in Issaquah, or Snoqualmie are solid areas.  Seattle is terrific and the Pacific NW rules for all kinds of outdoor activities.  Good luck!

Delille Cellars Four Flags

Great Washington winery making awesome Bourdeaux-style Reds.

H Upmann Robusto

Love Upmanns--very smooth and the Robusto is a good, accessible size.

Yale Van Dyne

But if not him, then Tom Harmon with Denard a close second.

A very talented NFL player with a WWE-size personality

Is He Related To Erin Moran?

Is he related to Erin Moran, America's Sweetheart from Happy Days?!!

No, because of these animals

And also, because Buckeye tears are delicious.

I was simply

I was simply channeling my inner mgobleu...and a Happy New Year to you my eskimo/hive mind brother.

For a few reasons

Speaking for myself, I dislike Dantonio for a few reasons.  Firstly, and viscerally, he has acted like a Galactically Huge Ass Hat for the past few years.  From his "where's the threat" comments to his actions at the HS Football event when he was a D-bag to Coach Heck, his words and deeds have been, at best, disrespectful towards the University, its players, and the coaches.

I think more rationally, my dislike stems from a little bit of jealousy, as he has done much more, with a lot less, over the past few years.  He has shown to be a defensive mastermind as well as a highly accomplished recruiter, eschewing star rankings and focusing more on developing players.

With that said, he has seemed to soften a bit over the past year or so.  When MSU players were tweeting nonsense during the Alabama fiasco last year, he came down on them publicly.  After we (finally) beat them, he was relatively gracious and joked that he was glad that he wouldn't have to face Denard again.  And this year, after the beatdown, he even voiced a bit of support for Hoke in the wake of the "fire Hoke" firestorm that was to come.  I think he secretly loves every minute of our struggles, but he has tapered his comments a little, at leat publicly.

So, in short, he's a great coach and a douche nozzle all rolled into one grumpy looking package.

Seattle coverage

I took at look at Xfinity/Comcast's online schedule in Seattle and it looks like it is the Texas game.  I hope that will change, but if not, does anyone know of any "unofficial" streaming sites that are good?  I'm living in corporate housing and am stuck with basic cable, so my options are limited.

A guy walks into the doctor's office...

with a duck on his head.  The doctor asks "What happened?"  The duck says, "It started out with a bump on my ass."

Met Ty Law in the Bahamas

It was many years ago, when had just joined the NFL and before he had made a name for himself as a pro.  I'm not sure why I recognized him, but I did, and I walked up and introduced myself as a UM alum.  He was so happy to be recognized, and could not have been nicer.  We chatted for a few minutes, I wished him luck, and went on my way.  Very cool experience.

Conversely, I met Desmond Howard when he was elected to the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.  He hung around to chat with people after the event, and while he was as nice as can be, I was a blithering fanboy...I was a freshman at UM during his Heisman campaign.

Walter Smith Was Awesome

If I recall, his leg was all messed up and despite that, he was stalking Coach Moeller on the sidelines and constantly asking to get in the game.  I think it was against Wisconsin.  Moeller got him in for one screen pass, the Wisconsin guys (to their credit), played extremely soft coverage, and when he caught the ball, the crowd went nuts.  That was a great Michigan memory.

ND because...

D'Antonio is a galactically huge ass hat.

The Name of the Wind- the Kingkiller Chronicles By Patrick Rothfuss. Just fantastic stuff. The follow up is Wise Man's Fear
My problems with Pam Ward

1) Her voice is deeper than mine

2) She had an Adam's apple the size of a grapefruit

3) She had hands as big as Andre the Giant

4) Despite this, I was strangely attacted to her

and

5) She couldn't get through a game without at least a dozen screw ups.

Other than that...she was OK by me.

Not in the App Store anymore either

I thought the app crashed, so I deleted it and tried to re-install it from the App Store, but it's not available there anymore.  I imagine it will be available again when it's updated?

Braxton Miller is Terrific

And he seems like a good kid.  Ohio's O-Line played very well.  We had problems getting to the QB and defending the edge.  As much as I wanted to be a classy winning fan, 7 years of living in Cleveland and putting up with Ohio nonsense made me say some things to Ohio fans fleeing the stadium that I'm not proud of...

I Live In Cleveland

And I've always prided myself on being a gracious Michigan fan, even when losing and especially for the past 7 years when I've consistently had it rubbed in my face from "fans" who have trouble spelling  O-S-U.  Today, at the game, when Denard took that last knee, those 7 years of abuse just erupted ot of me and I was kind of a dick to the OSU fans running out of the stadium.  I'm not proud of it, but it felt great to exorcise some demons.  I can go back to being a gracious fan again, and a winner for a change...

A Top Hand and a Monocle

Always funny.  Not sure why, just funny.

Sorry to Hijack--but still relevant

I apologize, I don't have enough points for a new thread, but figured this was as good a place as any for this...

Apparently, Gordon Gee's bowtie is tied just a but too tight, he actually has just said that OSU is the "poster child" for compliance!

The Catch

It was my first home game as a Freshman in '91 and I had never seen anything like that atmosphere in my entire life.  I was sitting in the student section in the end sone, and when Grbac launched that ball, all I could see from my seat was Desmond's feet go out when he streched to grab it.  I couldn't tell if he caught it or not, until everyone went nuts...

Boise State and Navy

Boise because I love the Smurf Turf and how a school with zero "tradition" has quickly established itself as a national force through great coaching and execution.  And Navy, because I was an Naval Officer and love everything that the Middies (and the Black Knights and Falcons) stand for as students, players, and future leaders.

Hoke's First Interaction with Ohio (State) Player

Sorry I don't have enough points to post this as an original thread, but since it's marginally on-topic, here is a funny story about Hoke's first encounter with Ohio C Mike Brewster:

"A handshake between rivals: It started with a swat. As Ohio State center Mike Brewster walked past first-year Michigan coach Brady Hoke, Hoke reached out and patted Brewster on the backside. Brewster spun and hands were extended, the Wolverine-Buckeye introduction made.

"Brady Hoke," the coach said with a smile."

OSU's Branding Is Maybe Not So Good in Comparison

The familiar Pryor excuse

""I am not doing anything wrong," she said. "I mean, I have a job, I work all the time. My son's had a car since he was 18-year-old. What's the difference? Everybody has a car. It doesn't matter to me. My son is what matters to me. I wish everybody would understand that." (emphasis added)

I guess the "Everybody has it/does it" excuse is embedded in the Pryor family DNA...

Embarassing, but True

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, so I had no connection whatsoever with the school.  However, I liked professional wrestling, and also liked the Steiner Brothers.  They used to come down to the ring wearing their Varsity jackets to "The Victors" and I thought that was cool.  That was actually the first time UM was ever on my radar (and the first UM shirt I ever had--the Steiner Brothers in front of a big Block M).  Fast forward to my junior/senior years in HS, when I started getting a bit more serious and started to like Government and History as subjects. One of my brother's friends graduated from UM and told me how good the Poli Sci program was.  I applied, somehow got in, and made one of the best decisions of my life.

Threadjack is Correct--Denard's Heisman Photo in WSJ as well

Denard's ND Heisman pose photo was indeed included as one of WSJ's best sports photos of 2010--it's the 4th picture down:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203513204576047860697697494.html

I will be there

I'm looking forward to meeting him and shaking his pimp hand in person to test both its strength and apparently delightful texture.

The first UM shirt I ever bought

Was a cheesy drawing of the Steiner Brothers with a big block M in the background.  I got it at an NWA event when I was 15 or 16.  If I recall, their entrance music was actually The Victors.  I like to tell people that I went to UM because of the great Poli Sci program and the sports, but really, it was the Steiner brothers...

Even the Findings Downplayed the Original Story

An interesting quote from the findings (from annarbor.com):

"But the committee wrote that "though serious," the overage was "far less extensive than originally reported and that no student-athletes were substantially harmed."

It's interesting that there is a split in the headlines that are reporting this story.  Some play to the positive, like "NCAA rules in favor of Michigan, Rodriguez"; other (guess who) lead off with "Michigan to get Third Year of Probation."  It's really quite amazing...

Youth doesn't seem to be a problem on offense

While we are playing a lot of true freshman and underclassmen on Defense, our offense is also fairly young and seems to be doing just fine.  Can there be that much of a pure talent disparity on the defensive side of the ball?

Still #1 in SI Poll

Obviously we should take it with a grain of salt, but Denard still leads the Heisman race as far as SI is concerned:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/cory_mccartney/10/11/heisman.watch/

Oh, and you can also...

You can also be President of the United States.

Movies are Critical

For the MD bar exam, I went out with my friends to see a movie before the MBE (Lethal Weapon 4) and then again before the essay part (There's Something About Mary--yes, I'm old).  The best thing to do is shut your brain off for a little bit.  I honestly think that relaxing a little before each test night is critical to sucess.

Also, echoing many of the comments above, DO NOT, under any circumstances, talk or compare answers to anyone during breaks or afterwards.  That is a recipe for disaster.

And, as a parable, don't be the person who was sitting across from my buddy--There was about 15 minutes left in the essay part, and the girl across from him got up and went to the bathroom.  With a minute left, she got back, put a big "X" through a page and a half of her essay answer and started writing anew.  Then, they called time.  Probably not the best bar strategy.

Just keep your answers simple and follow pure IRAC analysis for each question.  Good luck!

SyFy Movie Titles

Since a lot of Syfy "original" movies are just bad rehashes of real Hollywood films, comedian Patrice O'Neal did a great bit on the Opie & Anthony show riffing on how the channel could remake and rename certain movies to avoid any intellectual property issues.  Some examples were: Jurassic Park="Dinosaur Forest"; Terminator= "Robot Killer From the Future"; Predator= "Space Jungle Hunter"; Back to the Future= "Time Car"; and my favorite, Iron Man= "Steel Dude"

Todd Collins

I had a few poli sci classes with Todd Collins and we studied together and hung out every now and again.  Not only was he very cool and down to earth, but he was REALLY smart..  He never got much credit for being an excellent student-athlete, but he was quite sharp.  Also a damn good QB, who is still playing a solid back-up role in the NFL.

Amazing Voice, Better Performer

I've seen Dio twice (both times with Yngwie Malmsteen opening for him) and he was so good live.  His love and passion for his music, and more importantly, his fans, was sp palpable when he was onstage.

Is it wrong...

that I can't get the friggin' song out of my head?  I watched the video in abject horror and yet the chorus has not left my brain since.  Is Freekbass in fact an evil genius, posing as a sad version of a white, untalented, Bootsy Collins??
