It's actually the pig farm…

It's actually the pig farm that's ~1/2 mile due south of the stadium. Whether or not you smell it is highly dependent on the winds. I used to live ~2 miles from there and could smell it quite frequently. I also spent a few weeks working in the lab associated with the farm and can confirm the source.

This is probably close…

This is probably close. Coral are actually colonies of microorganisms called zooxanthellae. These microorganisms are what produce the vivid colors and the calcium-based skeleton that we see and call coral. Thus, when you fragment the skeleton, you aren't actually damaging the organism at all. This is also why two fragments of the same species will fuse together when they touch.

It is surprising that this took so long to be used to re-populate natural reefs. "Fragging" as it's called has been used for decades to sustainably produce and share corals in the aquarium industry. Most aquarium suppliers have large farms set up to constantly generate small fragments to sell.

Despite being very resilient to propagation by fragging, the zooxanthella are very susceptible to even the smallest of changes in water chemistry, light conditions, flow, and temperature. It's easy to crash an entire aquarium with a small mistake.

Source: I went all-in and maintained a reef tank for a few years during grad school. It was a ton of work and required loads a research to maintain a balanced system, but was super rewarding.

I'm a big fan. Not sure if… I'm a big fan. Not sure if it's just because of the similarity to the old site layout and what I'm used to, but it seems much more readable. My biggest issue is the sheer amount of white space. The white background is just too much without the banner or any contrast/differentiation with the sidebar.
Can confirm that U of I

Can confirm that U of I people tend to regard their men's club hockey team in a similar manner to how we used to think of lacrosse. Their main obstacles have been the fact that the current arena is nowhere near suitable to house a varisty program and that the athletic department is more or less in shambles.

From conversations I've had with individuals who at least used to be somewhat involved with the AD, the general thought was that they wanted to "fix" football and basketball before even considering adding another program. Maybe they are more confident about that with Lovie Smith and Underwood in place? That said, hockey still doesn't make a ton of sense due to the massive infrastructure costs (unless someone else is paying for the arena) since it likely won't bring in any net profits. There are a number of other non-revenue sports they could add with a much lower price tag (W Rowing, W Field Hockey, W Water Polo, M/W Lax, M Soccer, M Swimming to name a few).

If you have to ask if it's OK, it probably If you have to ask if it's OK, it probably isn't.
This is one of those threads

This is one of those threads that makes me wish I had enough points to up vote.

Agreed, kind of

I have to agree with you 100% on this. I really don't care about point totals (you can see mine), but there has been a increase in the quality of posts and threads in general.  As this change coincides with a relative lul in sports-related things to talk about, we'll see if this trend continues as people get more to talk about with the basketball team's performance and whether or not the football team can execute in the bowl game.

One More

As someone who mainly lurks, might I suggest getting rid of the feature where you automatically get 1 point for each post. I've see a lot of "new" posters quickly make a bunch of relatively useless posts just to hit that 100-point total to start making questionable threads that inevitably get taken down.

Making the point totals purely a factor of up/down voting would make that 100-point total mean a whole lot more and would probably reduce quite a bit of the bad threads that get taken down anyway.

Banner Quote

Did Brian also take this opportunity to change the quote under the banner? Or was I just too oblivious to see when this happened/was mentioned earlier.

Johns Hopkins

They should try to get JHU on board since they are affiliate members now.

To add to the excitement,

To add to the excitement, Men's Rowing just won their sixth consecutive ACRA national championship down in Gainesville, Ga! A strong showing from the entire squad was able to hold off a very good Virginia team, 46 of the 67 Michigan athletes came away with medals in their respective events.

1st varisty 8 came back for a poor race at Dad Vails to win the ECAC championship and ACRAs,

2nd varsity 8 won all three of their championship races over the last few weeks.

Freshman 8 took 3rd.

Freshman 2nd 8 took 2nd.

Both the freshman heavyweight and lightweight 4s took second.

The big difference between

The big difference between lacrosse and rowing is that the men's rowing team has already been a consistent top 15-20 over the last decade without varsity status. In fact, the only IRA teams that Michigan hasn't beat in the last 10 years are Washington, Cal, and Harvard.

If you want a good idea of what Michigan rowing would look like with varsity status, take a look at Wisconsin. No men's scholarships, but the supportive campus culture, facilities, sway with admissions, and lack of yearly dues payments allows them to recruit and hold onto high-level walk-on athletes who would otherwise not be accepted to the university or be dissuaded by shelling out money for what is really just an extracurricular activity when no scholarships are involved.

From what I think I

From what I think I understand (among all of the different reports), the man who was ordered to strip down was actually the carjacking victim/hostage.

It seems the cops were worried about explosive devices after the older brother was found to have them strapped to his chest after he died.

Other Sports

As many others have stated, there is now a substantial amount of evidence to back up the fairly intuitive idea that repeated head trauma can have a long-term negative impact. Football players offer a large sample size for these recent headlining studies. My question is when will there be more of a focus on the other sports that involve any kind of contact. Even if you forget about things like boxing and martial arts, other sports like hockey and lacrosse probably have similar long-term effects. Hell, even soccer players are taught to use their heads to move the ball around regularly.

In the end (for better or worse), I don't actually see many changes into how any of these sports are played. There is already more of a focus on developing safer helmet and padding technology, and I expect that to continue.

Yup, they won in 2007 with

Yup, they won in 2007 with just the Circle of Life.

Half Correct

The young lion in the first half was one of the female coxswains on the team. The older lion that did the dancing and was held up at the end was male.

Leadership

This kid has been invaluable over the last few years. So glad that he comes away with this recognition.

One thing that I think has been understated so far is how much senior leadership the team is losing after this year. Kovacs, Denard, and Lewan (assuming he is gone) all fit very naturally into that role. As an outside observer, I don't see many of the current juniors/sophomores filling that void.  Jake Ryan might be an obvious choice, but this team is going to need others to step up like Big Will did this year.

I'm really looking forward to

I'm really looking forward to reading what this kid has to say in the post game pressers over the next few years.

My bad. I guess that I, along

My bad. I guess that I, along with others who have brought this up, just never had a reason to pay attention to which hand he was holding the ball with until his throwing hand went numb.

When he's had the ball the

When he's had the ball the past couple of weeks, he's ALWAYS ran with it in his left hand. In addition to his lack of throwing during warm-ups, I have to believe that his right arm is still experiencing a lot of problems. I can only wonder if this has also compromised his ball security if he is always carrying with his less dominant hand.

Absolutely not. But if the

Absolutely not. But if the country is trending toward 14-16 team superconferences and the B1G is forced to expand again, I have a hard time seeing us getting any significantly better schools.

As someone currently residing As someone currently residing in Champaign-Urbana, I've seen a lot more hatred toward Michigan than Northwestern. They have the "muck fichigan" shirts in all of the store windows year-round.
I've been thinking about this I've been thinking about this for a while now, and there is definitely a problem that has developed over the last two years or so. I graduated last year, but for a few years now, I have noticed more and more students simply feeling apathetic towards football in general. Some people always showed up, and more are now than ever. Additionally, the ushers are no longer checking tickets to force the freshmen with tickets in row 90 to go up to their seats add they used to (yes, it's not hard to get around but it was the only obstacle preventing those students from just walking into the lower bowl). People not showing up at all is a whole other problem, but forcing people to at least go up to their seats first would make it look more full.
