Good to see people everywhere see how bad Anderson is

edit: nvm

maybe?

My understanding is that a veteran is a person who has served at any point in time in any branch of the military. So even current members would meet that definition. But then again, there is an unspoken insinuation that the service is over.

11W site redesign

I hadn't been to 11W in a while and, is it just me or is the new web design trend of "OMG pictures everywhere" incredibly annoying? I value sites like mgoblog, google news, and reddit precisely *because* there isn't a bunch of superfluous crap all over the place.

it's been so long, I just...

I'm here for the posbang

My new favorite word

During the signing day liveblog

During the signing day liveblog Brian said they are working on it and they want it to be more wiki-style. Yes, I know it's already kind of a wiki but maybe the change has something to do with the site overhaul that is apparently in the works.

O'Brien

O'Brien left because he lost the starting job. He was able to leave and play immediately because he graduated.

Agreed

Agreed. I'd be okay with a freshman Shane Morris throwing to Gardner, Funchess, Gallon, the better of Darboh/Chesson and, fingers crossed, Laquon Treadwell.

FOIA Time

Let's just come out and say it: How is the status quo/near-future of college football not supported by illegal kickbacks or some other financial shadiness involving the blazer-adorned bowl buffoons and conference leadership?

Sweet names...

I want to root for this team just because some of their names are so awesome.

Mix, Teal, Brek, Zarek ...

Also, regarding Dymonte Thomas:

Josh Helmholdt: Alliance (Ohio) Marlington safety Dymonte Thomas is one of the fastest players in the Midwest for 2013, and overall an outstanding athlete. As a junior, though, he mostly played close to the line of scrimmage and we did not get a chance to see much of him in coverage. So, we did not get too bullish on his ranking until we were able to more thoroughly assess his coverage skills.

LINK

Saban's is interesting too

He had OK ST at #4 with Stanford at #3

Troy calhoun (air force) had OK ST all the way down at 5!

same issue on Safari

I have the same issue on Safari -- as soon as I click to see the next "page" of threads they all disappear. Works fine on Chrome, though.

I'm inclined to agree, but

I'm inclined to agree, but if Stanford beats Oregon tonight, the ducks only have one impressive victory (Arizona St.) and two losses. They might snag a BCS bid...but maybe not.

Also, they'd still have to beat USC next week.

I don't know

I don't know. The old old meaning of swag was literally, a bag of stolen clothes. So maybe it's cool to have swag because you're wearing clothes that you stole and are therefore a badass with swag?

Or maybe there's a new french-language thing in the hip hop community where it's cool to just not pronounce the last few letters of a word.

Seconded

Seconded. "Swag" is even worse.

booHOO

I didn't mention Maryland, only UVA. Why do you care what allegiances inform my opinion?

I saw an opportunity to make fun of UVA and I took it. Go throw on some seersucker/pastel getup and deal with it.

There are 3

Football, basketball, and hockey. I haven't seen UVA do anything in any of those sports. You must be a lax brah or something.

The thing is, nobody cares about anything besides bball and football. Just look at the guy who always posts about UM softball on this site. Nobody even reads that shit. It's nice for the players and their friends and family, but everyone knows UVA sports are a joke because their basketball and football teams suck. Get over yourself.

FWIW

UVA athletic program is pretty embarrassing . . .

welp

I agree with some of that, and it takes us back to the OP longing for the old pos/neg-bang system. A lot of trolling can be eliminated with a good moderation system.

I'm not sure I agree with self-censoring just because a casual observer might "take these things as truth." A casual observer might look at the front page and think MGoCommunity friggin loves Freekbass.

I think it's a fine line and we just disagree on it's precise location in the proverbial sand.

Seconded

People are so concerned about rising above "lol internets blog" status they seem to forget that this is indeed a message board. Leave the journalistic standards to Brian and his minions. If rumors are labeled as such and can be somehow connected to a legitimate source . . . I say go right ahead. If people go too far or are repeat offenders its nothing a little banhammer can't fix.

I think

I think there's a natural tendency for recruits to slip in the rankings once they commit to a team because they sort of fall off the radar. There are other recruits attending camps and whatnot, so the ones who perform well get pushed up in the rankings. With the exception of maybe terry richardson, I think if you look at the recent 24/7 changes, most of our recruits that slipped probably did so because they haven't been hitting up the camp circuit over the summer.

well, keep in mind

well, keep in mind they were rumors to us, us being the internets. We don't know what brady hoke and others know. I can think of many scenarios where the young man should be kicked off the team even if he isn't facing charges.

I think your problem

I think your problem is that the community doesn't enjoy. This is a worthless post. Smart-ass responses don't help you either.

really?

to me, it doesn't seem that much different from doing a tail jump or standing at the door of a C-130. Or even a blackhawk jump, for that matter. You just sit on the edge and push off.

If you've ever jumped out the tail of a small aircraft . . . this seems almost identical to that. Except you jump instead of walk back inside

To be fair . . .

Sort of reminds me of the fake guy on the bball side

Called himself Jonathon Paige, here's the story.

Guy just recycled the same news over and over. Before long he was seen as a bit of an "expert."

No can do

I posted a screenshot of the comment the other day but mods deleted it for some reason. Comment was legit though, TG made it on a public page. Look at the "players absent from media guide" thread from the other day for the leftovers from that discussion

For Mike Martin

Who's stronger -- you or Gary Yerden?

I DEMAND A RECOUNT

Of all the negs I've accrued on this thread. Thanks Geaux_Blue, it was starting to get lonely up here

ya'll are worse than OSU fans

Ignoring something won't make it go away.

1. There were unsubstantiated rumors that Kellen Jones was kicked off the team for something along the lines of "no means yes.' Rumors removed accordingly.

2. News that Kellen Jones is not on the team arrives via the official UM media guide.

3. Rumors resurface because now they seem substantiated.

4. A facebook account with the name Thomas Gordon and Cass Tech/Mich networks writes on a public page that Jones is off the team for assaulting a woman.

5. 4+3=9?

Stop negging me, or keep negging me, whatever. This is news now. Refusing to talk about it because you don't want it to be true is just as delusional as OSU fans complaining about a witchhunt

A magnifying glass might help

but seriously, the rumor is in the thread. look harder

trust me, it's here, keep looking

You can do it!

hmmm

I can see that. I think VideoTom's idea of a small site that provides a composite score would be ideal. Just one place that uses a formula to determine a player's rating. I'm sure the big 4 evaluators wouldn't be happy with it though.

Not so fast

I was sort of playing devil's advocate there and talking specifically about ranking players - i.e., if Scout has one 4 star ranked 75th and another ranked 125th - to me that's where the coin flip is. I assume (hope?) they see demonstrable improvement between 3 and 4 star players.

Recruiting is indeed an inexact science. But using inexact ratings further deteriorates our already limited ability to judge a player's potential. I agree that averaging the stars is usually most precise, but it's easily swayed if one site has gotten around to evaluating a player yet. Using only averages doesn't tell the whole story. And like you said, it's unwieldy.

Good point

That's a good pioint. I think the criticism of Scout's decision to give out a blanket number of 5 stars evey year is logical because each year is different. But to argue the counterpoint, look at the huge sample size. Of the tens of thousands (or is it hundreds?) of players every year I doubt there's much variation in the top fifty players from year to year. Recruiting is so inexact, I sort of think a lot of these services flip a coin when deciding who to rank ahead of who. You could probably shuffle the entire Rivals 250 and have it be just as (in)accurate from year to year (save the handful of can't miss Jadaveon Clowney types every year - keep them at the top).

look at basketball

Look at basketball, I think NCAA rules in basketball go into effect when a player is in 7th grade. It seems strange, but the fanbase reacts to the coaches - if a coach is evaluating a player in his first or second year of high school, it seems fair that the fanbase does as well.

I think tweeting at recruits and facebook stalking them is creepy though.

+1, but First off, +1 for the informative response. Thank you. Second, I wasn't whining about it, merely hoping to understand exactly what has been going on . . . as I stated, I know little about malware and the like.
serious question:

serious question:

What's the deal with all these malware issues? I'm pretty technologically inclined but I know very little about malware and whatnot - I've always associated that sort of thing with shady websites based out of places where people speak with russian accents. Is Brian (or his readers, us) being targeted specifically? Is the code he uses bad? Is there a human behind this, or is it a self-propogating virus?

The other day during the malware issue Brian wrote a paragraph-long explanation that was gobbledeygook to me. So, for anyone out there who understands this stuff . . . can you answer any of my questions in non-techie speak?

It's time to dump netflix stock

If anyone else pays attention to that sort of thing, it's time to dump Netflix stock. The company has had a ridiculous run the last year or so, increasing stock price about ten-fold (off the top of my head) and membership about 30%. But their problem is three-pronged:

1) People are starting to realize their streaming selection sucks and they're moving to other services (HBOGo, anyone?)

2) Amazon, Apple, et al are wanting to become major players in the marketplace and have the cash to drive up the price of contracts with movie studios

3) Netflix's contracts all need to be renegotiated in the next year or two. There's no way they'll be able to secure deals financially similar to the current ones, and to maintain even the disappointing selection of streaming content they'll have to pony up beaucoup bucks (see #2)

All of this leads to price increases and, I imagine, more price increases down the road. Short sale anyone?

Going dowwwwwwwwn in a blaze of glory

Count the fours

Not saying you're wrong, but to play devil's advocate, count the total number of fours: Wisconsin has 17 and MSU has 6. Wisconsin has 5 commits that are consensus 4 stars and MSU only has 1.

So Wisconsin gets a bump because they have 5 players considered top-end talent and 3 currently-unranked guys bring down their average. Meanwhile, MSU has one top-end player and 9 good (but not great) commits. Again, not saying you're wrong but I think the answer lies in whether you prefer a few really good players or a few more good players.

Slight Discrepancy . . .

Is 24/7 inaccurate in their listing of the Nittany Lions, or of the Wildcats?

Edit: Ditto what Rockediny said

So TVH is assuming

So TVH is assuming we add two more OL commits?

Yes I know

Yes I know. Their advertising should stay there. If they want more advertising they should pay for it

You should

You should probably pay for advertising instead of using MGoBoard space. Brian is a blogger and I'm sure he could use the money
