Love how everyone glosses over that Detroit Water terminated the contract they had with Flint, then tried to extort Flint into signing a 30 year contract. Detroit Water had been robbing Flint with the highest water rates in the country.
1. Flint has been under an Emergency Manager on and off for 20 years because they're basically bankrupt and have elected thieving clowns for the last 30 or so years.
2. Detroit Water is corrupt, neglects all infrustructure, and had been scamming Flint and Genesee (and Oakland) County for decades. Flint had the highest water rates IN THE USA.
3. Half of Flint doesn't even pay their water bills.
4. Flint joins a Lake Huron pipeline project in 2013 to get out from under the Detroit Water cartel.
5. Detroit Water terminates their contract with Flint. Detroit Water then tells Flint to sign a 30 year contract at rape prices, forcing Flint to accept or find aother water source to fill gap between contract end date and completion of Lake Huron pipeline. (I think this would be extortion in any other business.)
6. Flint moves to Flint River.
7. Shoddy testing and treatment at state and county levels masks lead problem for about a year.
tl;dr Detroit Water scammed Flint for years, then tried to jam them for another 30, forcing broke-ass Flint to use their river water as a stopgap until completion of a much cheaper Lake Huron source. Idiots at state and county levels didn't treat the water properly. Few, not all, Flint kids have suffered some lead affects.
