4 days 22 hours ago I'm guessing these latest

I'm guessing these latest departures (Ringer/Robinson/Jones) are the result of post-spring season meetings in which the coaches laid out each player's role on the team, and each of them were essentially told they aren't in the plans.

1 week 1 day ago How about if no one

How about if no one apologizes for anything and we honor the Fab Five next year and we all move on withour lives?

1 week 2 days ago I'm pretty aware of how much

I'm pretty aware of how much a billion is. It's $250 million times four  years of a football superstar's career. Is it conceivable that in the very near future (say, two years from now) that's what B1G/SEC athletic departments will be earning over four years with the new playoff and the money that will bring in, ESPN/ABC rights deals, and conference TV network revenue, forced donations (aka seat licenses/waiting list fees from football and men's basketball), ticket sales, sponsorships, in-stadium advertising, etc.? I'd certainly say so.

1 week 3 days ago I like your first idea, but

I like your first idea, but the whole "I have student debt" is lost on me. Your school (I assume U-M) didn't make millions (if not billions) off of  you in ticket sales and TV revenue based on the time you put in outside of your studies and weren't allowed to have a job because of archaic if not draconian regulations.

If you want to know how shitty of a deal it is, go to your office today and offer to forgo all forms of compensation if your office will give you a shitty one room apartment that you have to share with someone else and two meals a day. And you're not allowed to have a second job for spending money. And if anyone wants to give you any kind of additional assistance, it has to go through your employer to ensure that it doesn't go against regulations.

1 week 3 days ago Yes. Trey Burke would be

Yes. Trey Burke would be receiving the same opportunities because he's one of the best basketball players at his level and became so not because he stepped on the campus of the University of Michigan but because he put in the work to become what he is.

Remember, they jacked up the prices and required donations after last season, which ended in the first round of the tournament. They did so because Trey led the team to its first B1G championship since Antoine Joubert and Roy Tarpley.

i think it's important to disassociate the athletic department from the school. The AD isn't part of a public institution (well, not really). The AD is a profit machine independent of the school, and the profits go towards unnecessary construction projects (big HD screen scoreboard at the baseball stadium) and funding non-revenue programs. Sure, it gives some to the university's general fund, but largely it's a "non-profit" corporation in which the AD and coaches are millionaires, built solely off unpaid labor. I have no problem with Brady Hoke, John Beilein and Dave Brandon being paid what they are. But no one's coming to the stadium to watch Brady coach.

1 week 3 days ago Your use of "Trey Burke

Your use of "Trey Burke winning the NPOY at Michigan" as an example kind of argues against your point. Michigan hadn't had an NPOY in forever and hadn't been a real player on the national scene in almost 20 years before Trey Burke stepped on campus.  So ask yourself: Did Michigan's basketball program make Trey Burke what he is, or did Trey Burke make Michigan basketball what it is?

Is there a symbiotic relationship? Sure, but judging solely by attendance/ticket and donation prices before and after Trey's coming, I'd say there's a whole lot of evidence that Trey made the basketball program what it is more than vice versa.

1 week 3 days ago Apples/oranges. Medical

Apples/oranges. Medical interns aren't the product. Schools are charging professional prices  to watch college basketball players (i.e. the product). Plus, you need a medical degree to be a doctor. You can't major in "basketball."

1 week 4 days ago You know Jackson is married

You know Jackson is married to the Lakers' soon-to-be majority owner, right?

2 weeks 4 days ago That kid has to be 15 or 16

That kid has to be 15 or 16 years old now. Someone needs to find him for a Where Are The Now? piece.

2 weeks 4 days ago I'm not crazy about parity

I'm not crazy about parity based scheduling. It's a great theory until that one season Michigan State/Penn State winds up in the championship game because parity-based scheduling matched it up with Purdue and Illinois, when each M and OSU lost a game to Nebraska/Wisconsin/Iowa okay not Iowa.

I realize that can happen with standard scheduling as well, but at least those are planned in advance. I'm not crazy about parity-based scheduling in the NFL, as it leads to that come-out-of-nowhere playoff qualifier that gets torched by 40 in the Wild Card round (at least it used to before the entire NFL essentially became as good as everyone else).

Also, does this mean the "Land Grant Trophy" is going to be a thing again?

3 weeks 2 days ago Sorry OP, but the drunk

Sorry OP, but the drunk sorority girl showed up to argue on her own behalf.

3 weeks 3 days ago I doubt Smith makes it out of

I doubt Smith makes it out of the first because someone almost always trades into the late first for that dropping QB. I'd love to see him go in the top 5, as that would give the Lions an option to Lane Johnson. Everyone is giving Johnson to the Lions, which to me is the worst case realistic scenario.

4 weeks 18 hours ago I'd love to see how

I'd love to see how multi-year scholarships are enforced as contracts.

"What that you say there, third year player who wants to jump to the NFL? You still have another year on your scholarship contract and we're going to hold you to it."

4 weeks 3 days ago Many NBA people view it as a

Many NBA people view it as a negative to stay all four years because you're three years older than many of the prospects; thus, you're more likely to have a lower ceiling. So whether or not he's a late-first/second rounder isn't as important as whether coming back next year could mean that he's not drafted at all.

5 weeks 1 day ago I think we should all just be

Boy, this makes me feel better.

5 weeks 4 days ago My only criticism was that he

My only criticism was that he might have played Spike a little too much in the second half. But that's understandable considering the way he played in the first. Pitino had his mistakes too, even though he was bailed out on his biggest one when the refs charged a Hancock foul to a someone who wasn't even in on the play. Considering Hancock's role, that might have been huge.

We really shouldn't nitpick at this point. We had a great run. We just came up a little short. Good luck to those that choose to pursue their professional dreams. Thanks for the great ride.

6 weeks 3 days ago I like Zack Novak as much as

I like Zack Novak as much as anyone else, but you can't be serious. Why not Mike Griffin?

6 weeks 3 days ago Poor us...

Michigan was "vicariously liable" because Fisher started giving Martin tickets to things like the 1993 Final Four and courtside seats at home games so that he could sit next to big recruits. Fisher did that. He ran the program. We weren't victims.

You can try to blame Webber or Bullock or Traylor all you want. They certainly get a share of it. But I choose to put the bullseye on the adult in charge, who was paid to know better.

6 weeks 3 days ago I don't think that was

I don't think that was Mitch's point, but you're right. The Fab Five would be a matchup monster for this team. They'd have a hard time guarding both Webber and Howard, let alone finding someone to matchup with Rose defensively. He'd have at least six inches of height and reach on Burke.

6 weeks 3 days ago I think he's just comparing

I think he's just comparing the 1993 team, not the original Fab Five team. No idea why, other than the five freshmen making the finals is one of the more remarkable accomplishments in college basketball history.

6 weeks 3 days ago Have you thought to tweet at

Have you thought to tweet at Matt Shepard about it? He might know. [Edit: @ShepMatt]

I'd guess that internet streaming is considered "national," thus the exclusive national broadcasting rights would prevail. I would think the university would rather broadcast its own production, with its own advertising, if it could.

6 weeks 3 days ago Mitch's logic assumes that

Mitch's logic assumes that this season's seeded teams are comparable to the 1990s era, pre-Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant college basketball, which it is not.

I love both teams, and take nothing away from this team and what they've accomplished.  But you really can't compare these eras. To say that one is "more remarkable" is kind of doing the ESPN "embrace debate" thing. They're both equally remarkable considering the respective climates of college basketball at their time.

6 weeks 4 days ago As if Trey Burke's greatness

As if Trey Burke's greatness and importance to the program is somehow conditioned on whether he graduates. Hey Trey, give away two years of your prime earning capacity or we won't formally acknowledge what you meant to our program!

How about this? Considering he put the program on his back and carried it back to the promised land and was essentially paid in doughnuts to do so, we should retire his number and build him a statue. We owe him that.

Also, Jalen Rose and Juwan Howard should have their numbers retired too. Banners up or down, they weren't accused of anything. And they both graduated, for those who insist that be a prerequisite.

6 weeks 6 days ago I don't have the requisite

I don't have the requisite hate for Kansas to properly enjoy this. Give the Buckeye family crying at the 2007 BCS game over this anytime.
