MGoRadio 1.1: Unjustifiable Hype

[Patrick Barron]

Sorry about the lack of a podcast last week. We had a number of snafus, as new things are wont to have. We should be good going forward.

Also a big thanks to our sponsors. The show is presented by UGP & Moe's and frankly would not be happening without them; Rishi and company have been on board here from almost the beginning. Shopping with them helps us and supports good dudes.

Our other sponsors are also key in the expanding empire: thanks to Homesure Lending, Draft Kings, Busch's, and TiqIQ.

0:00 UNLV Recap

First two segments are Ace and I talking UNLV. Will be a bit of a rehash for podcast listeners, but with the extra day we have some more refined takes.

40:00 Gimmicky Top Five List: Things We Were Most Unjustifiably Hyped About

Yes, Dennis Norfleet is on my list. Jerks. Matt Demorest of Homesure Lending joins us for this segment with his own list, which has some good ones on it, and then yells at his kids to go to bed at 6 PM. I mispronounce his last name. Good times.

1:09 247's Steve Lorenz

Steve comes on to talk to us about Caleb Kelly, Donnie Corley, DT recruiting, and Brandon Peters. Also he describes life under the iron fist of Jim Harbaugh. He thinks it's fun!

Catch us Mondays 5-7 on 1050 WTKA.

My sister-in-law, an Illinois grad, bought me a Muck Fishigan shirt the first year we exchanged Christmas presents.

I also had the same reaction described by Brain - "Wait you guys hate us? A lot?!?"

Wow. I had no idea.

I mean, I hate the Bears, and Illinois drivers annoy the shit out of me when they flock to my town (if you send someone to sit cross legged in a parking space while everyone else is waiting in a long line, don't get pissed when the local guy in the large truck whose waited 20 minutes just starts to pull in. The spots not yours.)

But a rivalry with UI?? Never even occurred to me. I'm generally happy for them when they win against other teams.

Rating Norfleet as unjustifiably hyped is a llittle bit like doing the same thing for Gardner and calling him a bust, but on a smaller scale....figuratively, not literally. No pun intended.

To say Norfleet and his abilities were a victim of coaching (both scheme and player development and as a slot or returner) would be an understatement and thus I don't think he was too badly over-hyped. Given the right situation, I think his careeer would have graded out much higher overall and perhaps later as well.

was all that bad. Would love to see him really get into a groove over the next few games, but they are having him get experience running a great many plays; hopefully it pays off.

Does seem true that how many we win may depend on him. (Over-simple, obvious, nonetheless true?) Or maybe the point is that he could lose us one or two with shaky play. . .

This was good stuff. Watched the WTKA podcasts. Your hard work is paying off, so keep it up fellas! What benefits you guys also benefits your fellow mgobloggers.

Entertaining as always!

Why did you have to pick 5-7? Couldn't you have gone on in the afternoon, I don't know, maybe start at 11? Let's say 11-1? 11-1 sounds so much better than 5-7. 5-7 reminds me of the bad times.11-1 makes me think about the better times.

They are both hot cities in the middle of the plains. So maybe Caleb Kelly would feel comfortable there? FWIW, it only takes like 1.5 hours to drive from Fresno to Yosemite, King's Canyon, and Sequoia. And it is maybe 3 hours to SF or LA.

Norman is real close to OKC, which is a lot like Fresno. . .

My biggest unjustified hype: the Tatgate aftermath. OSU loses the Vest (and Pryor), spends a year flailing around under Fickell. My schadenfreude was in high gear, I wanted to watch them flail around in the wilderness for a few years. We would be resurgent at just the right time and reassert dominance over the Big Ten. All would be right in the world again.

Instead the jerks land a miraculously healed Urban Meyer and immediately rip off a ton of wins, culminating in winning the first playoff and snatching the first Golden Yoni (which they promptly inscribed "TUN"). Damn I hate those guys.

From a hockey perspective, I'm going to say John Gibson.  I was so hyped when he committed, only to have him bolt for the OHL.  I always think about what we could have been with him (even if it was just for a year).
