\\Joe Lunghammer confessed, “I’d never heard of the University of Michigan — but I’d heard of Gordie Howe! And I figured, if he plays that close to Ann Arbor, we can go see him play. And that’s how I picked Michigan.”//

Isn't that what good writers do?

Well, the Freep would have you believe that good writers make stuff up...like stretching too much at practice or stories about conversations at final four games that don't happen because the people involved didn't show up.

Thanks for sharing, really neat article. Interesting how Gordie was talking up college hockey back then. I just picked up a copy of Blue Ice with a birthday gift card, so I'm looking forward to reading through that this weekend.

I have always heard the story of how Red came to Michigan, but I never heard the Gordie Howe part.

...that Colleen was the force behind establishing the Jr. Red Wings. Good lord, what amazing ambassadors that family has been for the game.

My mom was clearing out a storage area in our basement and found an old hockey stick about 6 yrs ago. After close examination, there were several signatures on it and after identifying many of them, it looked to be signed by most of the members of the '67-'68 Red Wings to include Gordie Howe. It now sits in a shadow box on display in my office and is one of my most prized sports memorabilia possessions.

Not trying to stir up a Mount Rushmore discussion - hello, bad sports radio when there's nothing else to talk about - but Howe's competition for the greatest athlete in Michigan history isn't Bobby Layne and Al Kaline. Howe was amazing and might be the guy, but the real challengers IMO are Joe Louis and Ty Cobb.

Actually Turd that's a GREAT board topic to take our minds off of football and Dave Brandon. Others to consider for the Detroit Mt Rushmore
Tommy Hearns
Barry Sanders
Steve Yzerman
Isaiah Thomas
Mike Ilitch
Hank Greenberg
I'm sure there are a LOT more I'm forgetting but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Excellent stuff, thanks for sharing. As was mentioned above, the Howe's have been great ambassadors for the greatest game in the world. Gotta love it.
