Zordich a Candidate at Youngstown State

Per Football Scoop:  https://footballscoop.com/news/update-at-youngstown-state/

Zordich grew up in Youngstown and started his coaching career there. Update doesn’t give any sort of odds. Don Treadwell is also a candidate. Job opened up with Bo Pelini’s return to LSU and inability to ensure his brother Carl would get the gig.

this would, in my opinion, be as big a blow to the on field product as Partridge was to recruiting, if it happened. Zordich would also be my favorite in house DC candidate in the event of a change.

It would suck to lose him, but thankfully this article names him along with several other coaches. It also doesn't really say any of these names are close to becoming the next head coach.

I also wouldn't put it past Tressel to specifically not hire a Michigan assistant coach.

+1. The hill I'm willing to die on is that Ryan Day hired Mattison and Washington not for on-field production, but rather because they were our main Ohio recruiters. Losing them eliminated the last of our Ohio recruiting pipeline that Hoke rebuilt/Harbaugh maintained after Rich Rod, setting us back to square one in that state.

Zordich did not begin his coaching career at Youngstown St. He was an assistant at Cardinal Mooney HS for five years, then spent another 4 years on the Eagles staff, the last two as safeties coach. He was a coach at YSU for one season in 2014.

I know that head coaching jobs are normally considered higher on the food chain than position coaches, but I'm not convinced the reality of becoming HC at YSU is that much better than where he's at now. Unless he really wants to return to Youngstown, seems like a step down to me.

Beilein is at the tail end of his career and by all accounts was burnt out on college coaching.    He had an opportunity to try coaching in the pros and was not guaranteed another chance given his age.  It is hard to see him envisioning the Cavs job as a stepping stone.

Zordich is a much younger coach looking to move up.   If he leaves, it is because he decides this opportunity is more likely to help him move up to another job after Youngstown State.

Completely different set of circumstances, but I guess they are both coaches, so you got that going for you.

YSU has definitely fallen off lately.

They (and Marshall) basically owned D-1AA in the 1990s.  But in the entire 2010s, Youngstown State only made the FCS playoffs once.  One time, and that's despite the FCS playoffs taking 24 schools these days.

15 years ago, I would have argued that job was just as good as a top-tier MAC school.  I agree with you that it's a step down.

He's a really good coach but an equally bad recruiter. Seems like he could be upgraded all things considered.

I do not think Zordich would really be on the radar as a defensive coordinator for Michigan. He seems like a guy who could very well be a position coach permanently.

Don't think Zordich is in the 1% of assistant coaches who are content at not moving up. He does seem like a patient guy and very loyal. Also think he's learned at lot at Michigan under DJ Dirken, Don Brown and Harbaugh which means to me, he qualified to be a DC at Michigan-he's payed his dues.

Hopefully, Harbaugh will keep Zordich from leaving. As long as Michigan pays more than Y'Town State, he should remain here.

Having a DC position at Michigan in 2021 would be good enough reason to stay.
