Zettel's Recruitment (?) - MSU - G / DE
Question regarding Zettel's recruitment due to his 4-star DE ranking on Rivals:
UM is recruiting him as a guard (as far as I've heard)- but he is listed on Rivals as a 4-star DE. I question whether the delay in his pledge to Michigan and his "newly" found interest in MSU is due to MSU recruiting him as a DE.
Anyone know whether 1) MSU is recruiting him as a guard or DE? 2) Whether Zettel has interest in playing DE, Guard, or either? 3) Any schools on his list recruiting him as a DE and not as a Guard? 4) And if he is more interested in DE, is UM recruiting him as a DE to get him to campus?
He's being recruited to play football at Michigan. They'll figure out the whole position thing later.
1. MSU is telling him whatever he wants to hear, and this is most likely DE.
2. Zettel seems to believe he has more upside as a DE.
3. Any early offers were likely as a guard, but more recent ones probably want him for defense.
4. It seems that the Michigan coaches have told him he would come in and bulk up a bit, then they would determine his best opportunity for success.
This is purely what I've obtained from "reading between the lines" in articles about him. Take it FWIW.
Magnus
the +1 button was invented.
And the -1 button as well.
Magnus makes a reasonable point; end of the day recruiting strategy of "come here and you can play X position" are nothing more than assurances to a recruit. At the end of the day the coaches get paid to win. If Zettel; suddenly develops and incredible burst in working with Barwis then he'll move to DE because this would give them the best chance to win.
After RichRod hammers the little brother in the fall I'm confident things will work out positively.
it's the matter of time before he commits to Michigan.
I totally agree here... Zettel sounds like a true Michigan man..... and if this is the case, then MSU won't even enter the conversation.
But I feel like Dantonio and crew are more likely telling recruits what they want to hear ("You can play any position you want," "Of course you can play basketball too! I am sure Tom would love to have you.") than Rodriguez. Dion Sims comes to mind.
I am not making a value judgement, just an observation after thinking back on a few different cases.
Did play on the basketball team
that if he signs with Michigan, the admissions office will yank his offer at the last minute.
The offer was never yanked for Dorsey.
Notice I said "idiot Spartoons."
or D-Line help?
Both sides need help. Michigan picked up a lot of DEs in the last class but not many (any?) DTackles and they are in certain need of some young offensive linemen after last year's class which only had 1 offensive lineman that I can recall (Christian Pace).
Zettel likes D-End a bit more, but isn't sure where his ultimate future is.
He's a high-level prospect on either side of the ball. I think Michigan is saying "we like you at guard, but if you want to give DE a try, you'll at least get a year or two there." They've done that for several other prospects, most notable Cameron Gordon.
It has been made clear that MSU is specifically targetting him at DE. Whether they have a need there as compared to Guard (ehhhh) is a different story. But I think it has become a selling point for them as they try to play to him liking playing defense a bit more than offense. Whether or not they would keep him there, who can really say.
All that being said, I echo what people are saying about him being given a shot at either spot and first and foremost it is the University of Michigan he is being recruited to.
Tons of schools tell kids "You can play wherever you want" to get them onto campus, (See: LSU and Russell Sheppard) but in 95% of the cases, the kids end up playing where they are projected best.
