Zavier Simpson gets his 3rd 100+ assist season

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on December 21st, 2019 at 9:34 PM

Z has 106 assists through only 12 games this season.

He has joined a very short list of Wolverines that have had three 100-assist seasons.

The only guys who have FOUR 100 assist seasons are

Antoine Joubert (102/164/155/118) and Gary Grant (140/185/172/234)

Ok.  But The Butterfly, D-Walt, Trey Burke, and a little guy named X would probably disagree with you.  On national  television only one out of three Michigan players knew all FAB 5 players and X was the only one.  Although I’d agree with you in principle it’s a little far-sighted on our part.  GO BLUE

Knowing a point guard from the 1970’s is the qualifier for being on the board? Jesus, I wasn’t even BORN for another 20 years after he played here. Not like he’s a major talking point in Michigan basketball history like the Fab5 are.

Weird flex, but okay.

I hope Simpson is Michigan's new all-time assists leader by the end of the season.

He has 537 after the win over Presbyterian. He needs another 195 to set a new Michigan career record and eclipse Gary Grant's 731 for 1st place.

Simpson is averaging 9 assists per game this season through 12 games. Assuming he can keep up this place through Big Ten play (regular season + tournament), he might have it before the NCAAT.

Doing so means Simpson had a 300 assist season which is just BONKERS.

FYI: Rumeal Robinson is in 2nd place with 575.

He also had two turnovers within 2 minutes and a charge within 5 minutes vs. Presbyterian. His increased turnovers this year are puzzling. Is it because of the more open style being played this season?

Some of the turnovers are frustrating, but he’s in a much more free flowing offense this year compared to last year and is shouldering much more responsibility. Under Beilein the offense was much more orchestrated, but this year he is being asked to generate looks for his teammates more rather than just running the plays that Beilein told him to. So that is obviously going to give him more opportunities to get assists but also generate more turnovers. It’s the cost of running this type of offense

To get 100 assists in a season isn't that notable for a starting point guard (in a full season that's about three per game) - but to reach that after only 12 games is impressive.

Simpson is one of my all time favorite Wolverines. When he took generalship of the team midway through his sophomore season, it became apparent that the team would be in good shape for years!
