Yzerman, Kane Press Conferences

Links are below for those interested.

  • Though no one in hockey has been able to successfully come back from hip surgery, methods have evolved and all are optimistic.  Kane's surgery apparently was done with a similar technique to Andy Murray's.
  • Targeting 8-10 days for his return, against Buffalo perhaps.

I had hip resurfacing done nearly 20 years ago.  The only thing my doctor told me I couldn’t do was run a marathon.
I continue to ski moguls, skate and lift. I lift a ton with my legs.  The base socket of a resurfaced hip is extremely strong and significantly different than a hip replacement.  It’s your own bones just new material to pivot on.

He should be fine.

The pounding on the joint for that long a period would certainly create pain.  Never asked if it would actualy cause an issue with the device. I had never had a marathon on my bucket list so it was easy to accept.  When I had been looking at a traditional hip replacement I was being told i might be able to ski, but I certainly would be limited to groomers and such.  Nothing against those who enjoy that, but i ski hard and like it to be as physically demanding as possible so I do a lot of bumps and lots of steep and back country.

Hip replacements have come a long way in the last 20 years.  Cermet compositions for the ball are extremely hard and long lasting as are the polyethylene sockets which receive the cermet ball joints. Everything wears out in time. I'd venture a guess that the other factors surrounding why one received the hip replacement in the first place would be as relevant as potential damage to the new hip joint from distance running.

And yeah, I got a new hip six years ago...a miraculous procedure that is helping an awful lot of people.  Ditto for new knees.

I had a similar procedure 10 years ago and can play basketball and golf without pain. The biggest obstacle is your range of motion is reduced. There is a reason nobody has come back from this professionally. I hope it works out.

Not gonna lie, this one is tough as a die hard Chicago sports fan.  I'm old enough to remember Chelios leaving and that was tough especially knowing he had years left in his career.  Debrincat in a Wings jersey was tough, Kane is even tougher.

That said, I don't know about you guys but I feel like the rivalry has really dwindled since the Wings moved to the Eastern Conference.  It's definitely still there, but like 2013 me would not have handled something like this very well at all.  In 2023, it sucks but I wish him well.

Despite the rivlary, I'm rooting for Detroit to be all the way back, the league is a more enjoyable place with a good Red Wings team and its been way too long.

I know I'm probably in the minority on this but I wish the Wings were still in the western conference. I miss the rivalries with COL and CHI. The Wings don't seem to have a true rival right now. Yeah the extra 10 PM starts would suck and I'm sure the players appreciate the reduced travel but life was better as a Wings fan when they were in the West.
