Winovich and the Revenge Tour Reaper

Pretty cool story leading up to the kickoff, and the mentality Winovich has had a hand in. Looks like M-Den has capitalized on it as well with Reaper Revenge Tour T-shirts under the Valiant label. https://www.mden.com/product/Valiant_University_of_Michigan_Football_Navy_Revenge_Tour_Reaper_Tee?VA1824+1014

also a few MSU/Bunyan style shirts. Go Blue.

Serious question: Could Winovich sell these shirts if they have no M logos on them and no likeness of himself?  I would assume it's not a violation to start your own business?

I beleive this is false.  Mark Titus (benchwarmer OSU basketball player) had a blog called "club trillion" and he could not sell shirts.  Can't have the talent making money, could steal some dollars from Delaney and Company.

And he was a walkon for the "scholarships are fair compensation" crowd .

If memory serves, Titus got dinged for really petty stuff while writing his blog when it came to compliance, beyond the shirts. It was a constant battle when all he was trying to do was write a hysterical blog as a form of entertainment and self-deprication.

I'll be totally honest: Mark Titus was the only Buckeye I've ever totally liked and respected. That blog was gold. An absolutely amazing and unvarnished window into what it was like to play in the B1G back then. Plus those FUNDAMENTALS MONTAGE videos. And he's done really wonderful things after, while facing some pretty tough stuff along the way.

I don't know for sure, so obviously will chime in as if I'm an authority. I do remember this example but believe the violation was making money off his athletic reputation. I think Winovich could start his own business as long as it did not involve him using his status as an athlete to promote it. He probably couldn't get startup funds from any booster to U of M or use his status as an athlete to get funding.  But it's the NCAA, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯...

I believe "Rutger" was originated by the guys at Crimson Quarry back in 2016.

Other Plans to Make Rutger Great Again

First what you'll notice is that we'd like to change the name of the University, officially. Rutgers may be a well-known name in New Jersey, but for people who matter, the "s" is too much work for a place that just doesn't matter. But we can make it matter.

Because in addition to hiring a great coach and dropping the "s," we'd like to put together a proposal to apply for admission to the Big Ten. Rutger doesn't belong in that conference, but there's no harm in trying. There's really nothing to lose when you try to do something that makes absolutely no sense.

The answer is no. NCAA by-laws forbid a player from employment or income that is “assisted by his or her status as an athlete.”  This shirt is directly related to his status as an athlete and would be aided by his popularity and status as a football player. It’s a no-no as of right now. May change soon.

Do you know if it has been settled whether a player owns their likeness? I thought that was the point of the recent litigation, but don't know if it is now a settled issue. In that regard, could a player put their face on a t-shirt and sell it? Obviously it violates the principle you noted, but if the player owns their likeness... I suppose they could do it but just end up losing eligibility as the consequence...

I’m familiar with the recent cases, but not sure how, or if, the NCAA has adjusted the regulations at this point.

I don’t believe any major changes have come about, yet, as a result of the litigation. At least not in the areas we are talking about.

I’m not certain about that though.

I overheard Chase say this to coach Franklin after the game:

“All right, Franklin.. you called down the thunder, well now you've got it! You see that? It says Michigan Wolverine! Take a good look at Trace...'cause that's how you're gonna end up! The Lions are finished, you understand? I see a white uniform, I kill the man wearin' it! So run, you cur... RUN! Tell all the other curs the Wolverines are comin'! You tell 'em I'M coming... and hell's coming with me, you hear?...Hell's coming with me!”
