Will future Big 10 expansion allow for a do-over?

Submitted by FL on

The only way I'm getting through this is to hope that if we add 2-4 teams  in a few years, at that time the higher-ups in the Big Ten will have an opportunity to correct the impending neutering of The Game. If they would have to re-do all the schedules anyway, it would seem like a good time to return UM-OSU to the last game before the championship. Thoughts?

If the Big Ten goes to 16, take the following pods as a hypothetical:

East: Penn State, Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers

Great Lakes: Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Indiana

South: Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern

West: Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska

(Forgive whatever competitive imbalance there is for the time being.)

Say that the bylaws are changed to allow a semifinal game. Great Lakes and East pods play in one semifinal, South and West pods play in the opposite semifinal.

Michigan and Ohio State can not play in back-to-back weeks and can still meet in a championship.

Problem solved.

I think, sadly, if they do move it we're going to have to boycott - completely.  Everyone surround the stadium with signs and protest.  If College Gameday shows up there needs to be a sea of signs to move the game back.  The stadium needs to be half empty, the student section needs to be completly empty.  I'm not saying don't watch the game, we'll certainly do that on TV but if we want to win this one we're going to have to take it on the nose.  We're going to have to boycott a mid-October UM-OSU game.  Most things about CFB I talk a big game about but ultimately I'd go regardless but, seriously, if I knew that I had the support of thousands of other who are going to eat their ticket I'd totally stay home to get the point across that you DON'T FUCK WITH MICHIGAN-OHIO STATE!

this may be less well received in Columbus compared to Ann Arbor. Living here in SW Ohio, there are well connected Buckeye alums I talk to that say this may actually bring the OSU president down.... President Gee is not well liked by many Buckeye alums (including big money ones) so I guess we'll wait and see.

Maybe, but that could be many years away, if it ever happens at all.  I'm not sure I have the patience.

It's just astonishing that, with three case studies to examine (the SEC, Big 12 and ACC), the conference has decided to follow the least-successful example (ACC) by far.
