Why not a guy like Brent Venables

Submitted by TallyWolverine on November 30th, 2019 at 9:10 PM

He has an outstanding track record of success. He was the co-DC of the 2000 Oklahoma defense that shut down Heisman trophy winner Chris Weinke and FSUs high powered offense in the BCS  National Championship game.

His defenses at Clemson are among the best in the country year in and year out. This year they are #2 overall behind Ohio State, and we may get to see them matchup against this Ohio State offense.

Also, Venables has been an outstanding recruiter. In 2016, Rivals named him Recruiter of the Year. Plus, he's still relatively young at 49.

His name has been brought up in several head coaching vacancies such as Kansas State(his alma mater), Texas Tech, and Florida State. I would think Michigan would be much more attractive than those three due to inheriting a far more talented roster here, plus the amount of money available here.

Regardless of today's result, this season's disappointment, and the underwhelming success of Harbaugh's tenure, I still love the guy. That said, in order to take the next step we need a guy like Brent Venables.

I hear Bill Parcells is available. Why not see if he's interested? He won a super bowl about 40 years ago and coached Lawrence Taylor, that would really resonate with young players.

My point is that you people want to fire Harbaugh for not being able to win big games yet you want to hire a coach who is 0-9 vs ranked opponents at Baylor

Harbaugh is at least 9-11 in games vs ranked opponents at Michigan

If the right candidate presented itself Id be all for firing Harbaugh and hiring that person but Rhule has not shown himself to be that guy yet

Would have to back the truck of cash up to convince anyone to switch from Clemson (easy recruiting, considered elite to 5 star recruits, plenty of resources, and in a warmer climate) to Michigan (currently losing annually to its elite level rival, unrealistic expectations of fan base, and struggling to recruit elite players).

possible...not the worst idea, just going to take a TON of money

we need a guy like Brent Venables.

Who is "we"?

And how do you know he will work out better than Jim Harbaugh?

Why don't "we" want this man, who has already won National Championships at 2 different schools?

Maybe he can convince Tressell to run the offense, and a "retired" Mork to come back as DC.

(I actually typed that without vomiting... much.)

I want a coach that we can trust is actually looking out for these young men's best interests.  Urbz is one of many who seems to have other priorities.

Who ever can replicate Narduzzi's time @ MSU is who we need to hire.  Those teams had the best gap integrity that I've seen, and made spread teams earn it over the top with low % plays.

Hire the best "quarters "coverage teacher left in the NCAA.

Look, if we fire Harbaugh (our hometown hero) after 9 & 10 win seasons, simply because he can’t beat OSU, what proven coach would be willing to take on that set of expectations?  Add in the obscenely tough division, and we just wouldn’t be a very attractive place to work (homerism aside).

I’m as frustrated as the rest of us, I just don’t know what the answer is, or if it lies in a head coaching change?

Then we spend years in the wilderness like Notre Dame (until they lucked into Brian Kelly who a good number of their fanbase detest).

I'm surely looking forward to that.

Why doesn't Michigan just open the money cannon then and hire Brent Venables, or Dave Aranda or the flavour of the month as DC then.

I would love Venables But I think the most realistic thing to hope for is that Don Brown is fired. Harbaugh is probably here to stay as long as he wants and as long as he doesnt dip below 8 wins

The guy who should have been the best DT prospect reaching maturity now turned out to be a flake.  The next one they thought could be even better at OT, which was seemingly an even bigger need at the time.  He didn't like it.

The former line coach was at one time a great recruiter, but went oddly silent after some criticism that seemed out of place at the time.  He didn't seem to develop most players that well over his last couple seasons (aside from one undersized end.)

Things seem encouraging with recruiting since that coach went away.  But they were young, or injured and/or former ends who gained weight.  Those aren't good combinations.  When your NT in a 3 man line is probably 270 you have problems when you get to teams that have 320 pound guys who are just as quick.

Poor damn Metellus should never be left alone in coverage as he was though.  If this is the scheme (and I love this scheme when you have real DT's & guys who can cover) it needs safeties who can hold their own fairly consistently.

It was painful watching Kemp and Dwumfour getting doubles over and over again and just getting removed from the line. I don't think we'll ever see a UFR of this and I'm never rewatching it, but it seemed like every replay of a Dobbins run featured one of those 2 yards out of the play

Honest question: what, schematically, should Michigan have done to win this game?

Harbaugh isn’t a senior leader jumping offsides on 4th and 4. He’s not that same senior blowing multiple assignments leading directly to TDs. He’s not the other senior leader blowing two zone coverages. He didn’t miss a cut to the front side of a play on a crucial 4th down. He didn’t drop passes in the 2nd half. Sometimes, it’s not the jockey, it’s the horses.

But it is the coaches fault for not making 5 star players come to UM. It the RB coach’s fault for not following his 300lb lead blocker into a gigantic hole for a TD on 4th down instead of cutting back for no reason, it is the ST coaches fault KH jumped off sides standing over the ball on a punt giving OSU a crucial first down, it is the WR coach’s fault for the WRs dropping at least 6 passes. Fire everyone

/s for the morons

Yes, I understand that. Do you think the staff doesn’t try to get these 5 star players and they just choose lower rated guys? I know part of the job is to be a good recruiter but just saying that JH and staff should get better recruits and whatever new coach would is ridiculous.

Schematically, I'm not sure, but other teams with good defenses (MSU, PSU, Wisconsin) can keep them in the 30s. That was all I was hoping for. Keep OSU in the 30s and try to get to 40ish on offense. Brown is averaging 60 ppg vs Ryan Day. It's going to happen again in Columbus next year too

What a stupid fucking post. If Harbaugh wins the bowl game and I bet he does, he'll have another 10 win season. The football talent in this State is piss poor and it's a challenge to do as well as he has. Shut the fuck up and be grateful we have HARBAUGH. Do you remember what it was like before he got here?!

I seriously can't take anymore of these fucking ungrateful assholes. HARBAUGH isn't a miracle worker but he has made us relevant again and he's the best we're going to get.

You people that think hiring the next best thing is the answer are absolutely clueless and I wish you would just leave the fanbase.
