Why is Nick Patterson "unlikely" to sign?

With McKeon being gone and Mustapha Muhammad transferring I'm surprised at the notion of Nick Patterson not being a take. That leaves us with just 3 scholarship TEs.

He visited Georgia Tech and Memphis iirc

Technically speaking, Villari had the following offers besides UM:

  • Massachusetts
  • Fordham
  • Albany
  • Buffalo
  • Central Connecticut State
  • Kent State

So did he have more than just Fordham and UMass? Well, yes. But none of these offers change the substance of the comment...it's just not a very impressive list. That's simply a fact. Which means that, more than likely, barring a miracle or absolute disaster, he'll probably never start here and will just help fill the roster. Though I could see him moving to TE as well given his size.

Yikes.  These are the signings that I don't really understand from Harbaugh.  Looking at his offer list, unless that list is incorrect, he isn't going to be playing QB at Michigan.  So why even take his commitment?  Why not just leave it open as an extra spot for next year.

We all know the trouble we were in in 2015 and 2017 when Hoke's decision to NOT take enough QBs meant we had zero depth and had Ruddock in 2015 (with virtually no one else capable to back him up) and got down to John O'Korn in 2017...........sorry, had a little PTSD flashback there.....So I get taking a QB even though they're like, option C or D, especially with the rise of the transfer portal. The real issue isn't taking Villari at all, but not being able to land anyone else that was better. Yeah we got the shaft cause our first option had to medically retire, but you'd still hope to be in on other better options, in the event that your first choice doesn't pan out.

Because Michigan never seems to actually run into a scholarship crunch and with how QB transfers tend to work you can usually find someone better out on the transfer portal if a guy doesn't work out (and likely at least 1-2 guys leave).  And while it's unlikely he becomes a starter ever, it was also very late in the process when Johnson had to retire and at some point you just have to focus on guys you've seen and are interested in.  But every once and a while you hit on a competent guy who can give you depth if nothing else.

I never understand why anyone gets too bent out of shape with a single recruit.  It's unlikely he's keeping a scholarship from a higher-ranked player, and more likely than not the next year's guy he's "taking a spot from" is going to an equally-wild ass shot in the dark.  So whatever.

I'm not "bent out of shape".  I simply don't understand the reasoning behind it.  It doesn't seem like a wise use of a scholarship.

Furthermore, it seems to me to be poor planning / recruiting.  How long has it been since we knew our prior QB was medically done?  Months I would guess.  I guess it speaks to how "Michigan" isn't "Michigan" in these kids eyes.  Having to "steal" kid from UMass or Fordham when we used to be able to pull a kid from Iowa or Purdue.

These are the signings that I don't really understand from Harbaugh.

Not like he took this guy last July.  They wanted a qb for depth and this was the best available.  I know Troy Smith was higher rated, but it was reported that OSU only took him because they wanted to make sure they got Ginn.  That worked out ok for them (of course).
