Which site is more respected in recruit ratings?

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I asked this in another thread, but I know it will get buried. Is it 247, ESPN, Scout or Rivals? Or is their a site I failed to mention?

I think one of the writers for this site did a breakdown once and claimed that Scout appeared to be the most accurate in terms of rankings. They've all got their pros and cons though. I prefer to use 247's composite rankings as a guide.

There's an article somewhere in his blog that supports using the composite I've been digging a while and I still can't find it, but you might. The gist is: rely on multiple sources for your rankings. Each may be skewed, but the sum will be less so. Just think of Normal distributions (pet peeve: Midwest schools call them "Gaussian distributions" and so does Brian. Grr.)

It's 247, mainly because they offer up more to readers that isn't paywalled, and I especially like their composite rankings. I've also heard rumor that Rivals only gives kids a serious look if they go to their camp(s), but I have no evidence of this. I stick with 247 regardless.

I pop out of the woodwork once in a while. Fall is a busy time for me. I have my hands pretty full keeping my own site going while I'm in season.

Anyway, what was it like growing up before fire? I bet the cheeseburgers tasted horrible.

I wouldn't say longevity is anywhere near as important as quality of content and writers. Rivals may have the best longevity but they also have the worst quality of content by far now.

247 is the new kid on the block, but they also were able to get several of the top writers and business men to leave scout and rivals and come to 247.

In a lot of ways it is on an individual insider basis too.

Sam Webb is hands down the best in the business, and he is with Scout

Wiltfong and Lorenz aren't far behind at 247.

It seems like top to bottom 247 is stronger, but Webb at Scout is a difference make, and Allen Trieu is solid too.

I sub to Scout for Sam Webb alone.

EDIT- This more from an information standpoint than a rankings standpoint.

Not gonna lie, I don't think Allen Trieu does a good job at scout. A perfect example is trieu recently changing his opinion of the amber Thomas situation. I don't want to give away paywalled content, but I'm just gonna say he is finally catching up with all the other websites on info with ambry.

But if you are talking about him saying Ambry to MSU? He can only go by what he is being told, and Ambry's mom loves MSU. MSU having it's issues right now, has brought levity to things. Ambry goes to KIng, and things always seem a little dicey over there. I think Ambry was / is trying to create drama, but we will see in the end.

247 composite is the way to go. Just in general, 247's scale makes the most sense. Rivals' is weird and scout is just a star ranking. 247's number breaks things down best between the high/low end of one star rating's spectrum. A.J Dillon and Jedrick Wills are both 4-stars, but 247's ratings will, FWIW, show the discrepency between what they think about the two prospects in their ratings. I, personally, trust those the most.

rivals and espn do this as well.. they both have stars and then specific number ratings.

i use 247composite now but, if i recall rivals was something like this:

6.1 = 5 star

5.6-6.0 = 4 star

etc

the higher the number the better.  so i really high 4 star is a 6.0

espn is a grade from 0 to 100

Definitely 247. They are easier to navigate, they have the composite rankings, and they produce a ton of content.

I'm subscribed to both 247 and Scout, but I've been thinking about dropping my Scout subscription for some time now.
