What would a Michigan Basketball National Championship or Final Four Appearance mean to you personally?

Submitted by WingsNWolverines on

Some of us are too young to remember Michigan's 1989 NCAA National title victory over Seton Hall. The Steven Fisher years for me sadly happened when I was oh so very young. However to the past alumni of the 80s and 90s, you remember it almost as if it was yesterday. This Michigan basketball team in my eyes has something special in it. A sense of a dream and a mission. Although this can be said for every year, this year the belief is stronger than ever and with the top point guard in the nation with Trey Burke teamed up with Tim Hardaway Jr and of course that amazing freshmen lineup of McGary, Stauskus and Glen Robinson the III (GR III) Michigan basketball has an amazing chance to run the tables in the B10 and possibly have an undefeated season.

Let's look into the future though a little bit and say Michigan wins the B10 outright and the tournament in Indy, goes to the Final Four and is crowned national champions. To you personally how would a Michigan basketball national title mean to you? Is this something you've dreamed of since 1989? Is this what you've wanted more than anything recently sports wise? In my opinion this win would be a blessing not just for Michigan but for the B1G as a conference. Michigan next to OSU generates the most revenue in the conference both in ticket sales in athletics and merchandise but in the aspect of respect a title like this would put us right back on top where we once were for so long.

I see this Michigan team like the 1980 US hockey team. Very young but capable of so much with great talent and amazing leadership. The most important part is the heart and belief in themselves seems so much stronger than in recent years. Even a Final Four appearance would be amazing in my eyes. It's a long way to go but this Michigan squad is without a doubt the team to watch going into 2013. GO BLUE.

i personally wouldn't compare this team to the 1980 US Olympic hockey team. i see what you're saying, but the pressure this team faces is nothing compared to what those guys faced.

If you want to make a comparison between Michigan basketball and the 1980 U.S. hockey team, it would be, like, one of the Brian Ellerbe teams or maybe Beilein's first team (which went 10-22) winning the national title.

This year, no way.  We were the preseason #5 team.  In other words, the voters considered us a strong Final Four contender before a game had been played.  So no, we are not analogous to one of the biggest underdog stories in the history of sports.

It would be amazing and incredibly satisfying for us to return to the Final Four after all this program has gone through.  Let's leave it at that.

I am a pure football and hockey guy. I am happy when the swim team, soccer, gymnastics, etc, team wins. I hope they win it all just for Michigan.

It would mean that the awful season that Michigan Hockey is having this year would be given less attention than it (probably) deserves.  For the life of me I can't decide if such a distraction would be good or bad.

And my 15ish years of fandom, a championship would be like watching the entire plot of Cinderella-man stretched out over a decade and a half. From where the program has come from...When that day comes there is a good chance I will be peeling an onion in a dusty room.

who put in the hours and hard work and who brought this program back than to any of us who just sit around in our underwear drinking stale beer and watching porn when Michigan isn't on.

As a resident of Atlanta it would mean a lot to see this team come down and play in the Final Four at the Georgia Dome.  The last time Michigan played in Atlanta was a couple years after I moved here in 2004.  M played at Georgia Tech in the B10-ACC Challenge and got absolutely dominated in every facet of the game and lost 68-99.  Literally the only positive takeaway from the game was that we held GT under 100 points.  A final four appearance in Atlanta would be awesome becuase it has become my home and I would certainly find a way to get into the Dome to be there.
