What to do on campus / in Ann Arbor after the game?

Submitted by M-Dog on August 24th, 2022 at 4:35 PM

I am taking my daughter (High School Junior) to Ann Arbor over Labor Day weekend for her official UM visit / info session / campus tour.  We will be attending the Colorado State game as well to give her a feel for Michigan on a game day.

I'm not a big fan of noon games when you are on campus because they cut short all of the fun pre-game activities and the buzz that surrounds campus before a game.  After the game, people just sort of dissipate into small groups and the buzz fades away.

What are some recommendations on things to do on campus / in Ann Arbor after the game that can still give her a feel of the fun part of Michigan / Ann Arbor campus life?

Honestly, from what i remember on 12 noon game days; its as you said.. things go quiet for a bit... and then people come out later in the night and the streets are packed. I guess it depends on what experience you're looking for..

I think heading to Good time charlies for food/drinks is an old school campus thing to do.

Maybe if its a nice day, get some food and hang out on the quad? If you're lucky there will be a preacher sharing how we're all a bunch of whores and masturbators... that really sums it up nicely.

If she's interested in the actual school, take the bus up to North campus and show her the engineering school - again, if of interest..

See what's going on at the State theater - that still exists, i hope... and take her to a show ... ideally The Wall - which i saw for the first time way back in 1997-8 there.

Eat dinner early, and then take her to the backroom for a slice around midnight? Just for the experience of hanging out there.. though itll be a bunch of drunk... nevermind... dont do that with your daughter.

I think walking around South U and the frat rows behind, and the campus in front, is the best "view" of college life there...

Charley's will forever hold a special place in my heart, but I personally wouldn't take family there for a real meal. The food is nothing special and the crowd is predominantly (underaged) undergrads -- but that might be different after a game, since many undergrads are napping before going out later.

Imo, the buzz doesn't really die out that much after a noon game -- at least in the more adult parts of town, since the students are recharging for the night. I'd go to Main Street/Liberty area and grab an early, leisurely dinner. If you want to give her a feel of the undergrad gameday experience, you guys can walk through the Hill Street area (east of State)/South U, she'll get the vibe pretty quickly.

I can't imagine a reason take her to South U late at night (she'll discover it with her friends when she's here), but if you do, Joe's supplanted Backroom for late night food while I was in undergrad (my taste buds were grateful).

Walk around. It sounds like a great opportunity for her to get a sense of the campus and the city.

Of course the football crowds will still be around, so she'll have to use her imagination to trim all the people she's seeing by half, but there's nothing like actually walking the places she'd be walking as a student.

My suggestion: State Street to Central Campus and wander without the tour, maybe visit the Art Museum, then turn left on William to check out downtown. Perhaps if you're not tired, take a bus to  North Campus.

Walk: Diag, the Arb, Central Campus, Law Quad, Main Street/the town...not sure what major she's interested in but it might involve north campus

Eat at your favorite restaurant

There appears to be stuff at the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Art

Didn't look like anyone was at the Ark or the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase

There's also a late afternoon volleyball game

I like the suggestions for walking around campus.

Choose your restaurant carefully. Ann Arbor has a number of longstanding eateries of mediocre quality. A number of them are on Main Street. It makes me think that Ann Arborites have low standards in that area. I'm not sure what's up.

To get a feel of the campus, hit the diag and the surrounding areas, the law quad, Ross School of Business, State Street, Liberty Street. Hit South/West Quad. There will a lot of people walking around enjoying the weather and post-game festivities.

Best bet is to hang out on Central Campus such as on South University where the eateries and pubs are and plenty of students. Likewise State street north toward North U, try Forrest Ave, off South U, either direction. You'll get the full favor of student activities.

Take her across the Huron River and show her the trade programs at WCC. Explain that it will cost about 1/100 the cost to learn how to be an electrician or to weld and she will earn about the same income or greater than 99% of the students who will graduate from UM in her class. Take her to Ann Arbor Arms and sign her up for a pistol class so she can get a CPL so if and when she's facing sexual assault she can shoot the guy's dick off.

Most importantly take her to Gandy Dancer for dinner and explain that earning lots of money only buys you overrated food. That a fulfilling and happy life will only be found by living each day with purpose and by serving others. Not that self care should be ignored, mind you. But self service will lead to emptiness and resentment.

I was always kind of spent after the game and didn't want more activity, especially if we did stuff in the morning. I think walking around is a great idea. Pizza House (off South University) is a very traditional post-game place to eat. I used to see players come in there with their families after games and that was fun. Frita Batidos has great food (off Main st) if you're more into the gustatory experience. I've never been to Zingerman's after a game (more of a pre-game stop for me) but that could be interesting, along with Kerrytown.

Go to any of the Arb, Law Quad, Diag and play some frisbee.  Get pizza at Dominic's, but don't feed your kid any drink that is purple.  Walk down Main Street and pop into any place that looks right for dinner.  Walk around campus with a faux purpose of getting a coffee, then finding some book, then getting picture next to the bell tower, then perusing the grad stacks, then checking out Rackham, get another couple of shirts on State St, then walk around the Michigan League.  If all else fails...Pizza House.

Some of my thoughts have been said already but I think that Dominicks is fun both before and after a game. The Earle downtown is a great place, and might be someplace for an early dinner if walking through campus. I'd definitely take her through the law quad, diag, Burton Tower/League area etc.
