Starring Bobby Hebert and Anthony Carter?

Might still watch.
Might give the lions a run?

Speaking of watch. I lost my Seiko divers watch when I raised my arms to cheer an Anthony Carter touchdown pass from Hebert at the Silverdome. It just flew off my wrist. I miss that watch lol.

The Michigan Panthers have been the only PROFESSIONAL football team this area has had in the last 60 years - glad to see them returning! The lie-downs are barely a semi-pro team - as their track record shows that without question.

How dare you besmirch the Detroit Drive!

I gave my first son the middle name "Hebert." Only partly because of Bobby and AC but that was the second time ever I got to have something nice, the 1981 24-6 Rose Bowl win over UW being the first.

No 'r', which I find fascinating. You know, it's Herbert "h e r b e r t". Hebert "h e b e r t". Hebert. It's a fun name to pronounce.

It's Cajun. Hebert. A bear.
Ed Orgeron would get it.

Thank you! A Seinfeld reference I did not recall.

John Corker was the man on that team. Something close to 30 sacks in the championship year. He was like Ojabo and Hutchinson all rolled into one.

novo bojovic!! no idea if i spelled that correctly.
November 22nd, 2021 at 4:14 PM ^
Novo Bo. The automatic toe.
They also drafted Ali Haji Sheikh, the maddeningly inconsistent Michigan kicker widely known as Ali Haji Shank.

I loved that team as a kid!

Only the Birmingham team has a home announced thus far, at UAB’s new stadium. So maybe Rynearson? Unless they’re planning on leaning into the “Michigan” and are going to play elsewhere.
November 22nd, 2021 at 2:38 PM ^
Apparently the plan is to host all the teams somewhere, likely Birmingham AL, at the start. Allow the league and teams to get its feet underneath them without having to worry about a local fanbase. Seems unconventional but could work better than traveling to empty stadiums.

They should play up in the Superior Dome in Marquette where Northern Michigan plays. I bet people would actually go to that.
November 22nd, 2021 at 5:30 PM ^
They should rebuild the Silverdome.

This indeed is not Small Potatoes.

I remember the USFL had some serious talent. Herschel Walker, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, AC, and Doug Flutie to name a few.
November 22nd, 2021 at 4:32 PM ^
Don't forget Sam Mills. Just a great linebacker.

The Panthers had the best uniforms of any of those teams by a country mile. Better than many of the regular NFL teams, too. Darn shame that league folded.
EDIT: and here is anthony carter in his panthers uni

Agreed. The color scheme was top notch!
November 22nd, 2021 at 9:33 PM ^
even the panthers logo was top notch, and it still is in our 'modern' era almost 40 yrs later. they would be fools to change much of that uniform in the reconstituted USFL.

I loved that Panthers team who definitely would have beaten the Lions. Ray Bentley and David Greenwood were two of my favorites not mentioned. Didn't Novo try to stab someone at CMU with a butter knife? Anyway a great kicker.

This is awesome. I had season tickets for $45 in the corner of the Club level.

Is Bobby Hebert still their quarterback?
That championship run was like a cool breeze on a hot summer day, and that was three decades of Lion's futility ago.
November 22nd, 2021 at 7:33 PM ^
closer to 4 decades

I remember the Panthers rallying from a 19-3 deficit in the championship game against Chuck Fusina and the Stars and winning 24-22. I loved the USFL and can't wait to check it out in April
