ND looks bad for keeping Weis, but they would look even sillier if they fired him.

i figure if they continue to recruit well and continue to dumb down the schedule, then the Fat Man should get to 8-9 wins sooner or later.

Does it seem coincidental that Kelly announces he is staying at Cinci just about the same time ND announces Weis will return?
Anybody else get this?

If they keep him, they keep him for 2 and only 2 reasons:
1. The buyout
2. This year's recruiting class

I think that reason #1 is probably the biggest.

ND is so stupid. I'm suprised that by now they haven't figured out that their coach sucks. I don't think the buyout would stop them from booting him. What makes them think he's any good. I bet he showed them his ring and they gave in.

They've done the whole let's-find-our-new-savior-who'll-return-us-to-glory thing three times since they fired Bob Davie. My guess is they're reluctant to go through it again.
And don't underestimate the buyout. Irish Illustrated reported that it was 'at least $10 million.' No amount of bravado speech from some rich, disgusted alum can convince me that that's not a serious hinderance to firing Weis.

And there was much rejoicing.

or perhaps
Dennis, there's some lovely filth over here.

I don't find this that shocking. I don't think he's a very good coach, but I think people underestimate how hard it is to win with a very young team. Most of ND's best players are freshmen or sophomores. It's not unreasonable to think that with another year (and with another talented recruiting class coming in) they'll take a step forward next season. That said, I highly doubt he'll ever have them in national title contention. The bigger concern if you're ND is that Weis might prove to be one of those guys who wins just enough to save his job. I could see them going 9-3 next year against their garbage schedule, and ND deciding that's good enough.

Navy, his decision to not kick the field goal. Enough said.

Charlie could be the college Wayne Fontes!
December 4th, 2008 at 12:40 AM ^
Could be. Fontes, like Weis, always managed to win when expected to lose, lose when expected to win, and barely slip into the playoffs on occassion and get waxed by superior teams in games that actually mattered. I see it.

I'm not impressed by how Notre Shame handled this whole thing. If they actuallly have to have an announcement that they aren't going to fire somebody then what they are really communicating is that he is a hair's breadth from being fired and he probably would have been if they had another candidate lined up. IT's essentially the same thing as the infamous "win or else" ultimatum that MSU gave to George Perles the year that he was fired. Not a good situation for recruiting.

During Sam Webb's interview with Bob Page on WTKA this morning:
Sam: "I can't talk about people that are overweight. Except for Charlie Weis, because he's massively overweight."
I choked on my oatmeal.
