Week 0 Big Ten Power Rankings from BTN featuring Jake Butt!

Submitted by NotADuck on August 26th, 2022 at 12:59 PM

Jake Butt makes his debut talking season previews and predictions for all Big Ten teams.  Video is 42 minutes long.  It takes place on-set but it feels more like a podcast atmosphere with Dave Revsine hosting.

He did really well. There was a point at which Dave was kind of prattling on about the OSU offense (which is, admittedly, loaded) and you could see Jake Butt trying to contain his exasperation. But he gave a solid argument for picking Michigan to win the B1G. Looking forward to seeing his commentary.

Honestly I think people who are familiar with this UM team and what it is returning on offense are just kind of annoyed that the people who want to blab on and on about how loaded OSU's offense is are underrating UM's and not acknowledging that it is also loaded in it's own right.

I'll speak for myself, but other Michigan fans may feel the same -- the problem isn't having weapons, it's Michigan's willingness to play a style of football that utilizes them. We'll probably spend 1/2 the schedule proving that we can "out-physical" inferior opponents. In my opinion, that just leaves you less prepared for the games where you actually need those weapons bc the trenches aren't in your favor.

Similarly, Saban has won most of his championships by having phenomenal talent in the trenches first (offensive and defensively), play physical ball especially against the lesser opponents until the score allows for more risk and then as the games get more difficult, he opens up the offense.

Harbaugh is using the same approach.  It's a tried and true approach and exactly the formula we used last year to win our first Big Ten championship in 20 years.  I'm 100% behind doing this again with another year of experience and doing it even better.

The difference is that Saban has 5* talent coming in and first round talent going out -- every year. I'd argue that Alabama is the only team who can consistently win like that, and it's bc of the talent in the trenches they consistently have. And even with that, they've been shelled through the air in big games and have had to throw all of that out the window. If the formula from last year works so well, why did it not work the first 5+ years?

And that's worked exactly one time in the entire time Harbaugh has been here. That's my issue with that approach. It's great to celebrate last year, but it would take several years of winning (or at least trading wins) for me to buy-in that we can consistently beat Ohio State by running the ball and being more physical.

The first 10 to 15 minutes of it are dedicated to the B1G East.  He picks Michigan to win it, OSU at 2, PSU at 3, MSU at 4, and touches on a couple other teams.  Then they talk about some early season matchups, especially Nebraska v Northwestern.  Bruce Feldman comes in for another 10 minutes to discuss a variety of topics including his Freaks List.  The last 10 to 15 minutes are dedicated to the B1G West and Jake picks Minnesota to win it.

For more details, I recommend you watch the video when you have time.

Very impressive job.  Jake Butt is going to have a successful career as a football analyst.  He said he started doing podcasts just last year and now he is featured on the B1G network.  Meteoric rise.

Oh and he picked Michigan #1 in the East ahead of OSU so there's that too.

I’ll definitely listen in to Jake’s segment - but, what I am most interested in is - seeing the “roster” play - especially, the earlier season games - when there should be a significant opportunity for the 2’s p, 3’s, and 4’s on the depth chart to get invaluable game reps.

The season hasn’t started yet - and, what’s going through my mind is - the OL was great last year - and - I sincerely hope for continued solid play this season.  But, next year - there will be new faces / starters on the OL.  Without doubt, the staff is developing that talent - my hope is - next year’s OL will be as solid as last year’s and this years - that the NFL pipeline for OL talent has returned to Ann Arbor.  One of the reasons I believe Michigan could have been more successful over most of Harbaugh’s tenure is - it takes a while to recruit and develop an OL - and, you can’t be successful on offense (especially against solid defenses) j without one.  I hope that “OL pipeline” is back to stay.

“Practice does not make perfect.  Only perfect practice makes perfect.”

So, in a week, and through September - my hope is to see a lot of the depth and talent on the squad.

What don’t I expect to see?  A 50 / 50 run / pass play selection.  The team will pass on occasion - but, it will be a run heavy offense until October.
