Webb indicates more (incoming) transfers are possibly in the works...

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

Sam Webb is saying that two former 4-star teammates on a traditional "southern power" are looking to transfer to Michigan, and Michigan will pursue upon the two players being granted release which has NOT happened yet. He is stressing that this is in the very early stages and being intentionally vague.

As to who the players are: both are defensive guys. One would be able to play right away as a grad transfer and Sam said that he would "absolutely contend for a starting spot in the front seven". The other would have to sit a year but Sam thinks would definitely be in the DB rotation after he becomes eligible.

Now, if you'd like you can do what we do best: get our hopes up and sleuth. Possible names being tossed around are Antonio Morrison/Alex Anzalone and Jalen Tabor from Florida, as well as one of the three DB's from Auburn that announced they were leaving this week (Melton, Moncrief, Turner). Interesting from the Auburn group is Derrick Moncrief who went to Prattville, AL, where we have procured two recruits from in this recruiting cycle and the previous one.

All of this is premature and speculative, but optimism would this board good. Go Softball tonight.

I'm very intrigued. Gonna have to be a lot of attrition to hit the #fab25 and take in more transfers.

Well my first thought is both are players from UF due to Durkin connection but then I doubt the guy eligible for 2017 will be a UF guy because they wouldnt release someone to sit out a year and play against them in 2017.

So sticking to UF - the front 7 guys who were RS JRs last year and hence have 4 years under belt and able to move immediately are...absolutely no one I can find in UF's 2 deep last year.

Their front 4 were 2 JRs, 1 SR (a guy suspended for the bowl), and 1 RS SO.  1 of those JRs was Dante Fowler (NFL) - I am including his "Buck" position as a down lineman (prob more of a LB or combo guy).  I am not sure if a 3 year player who finished school early (degreed) could move as a true SR.  I assume no or else we'd hear about it more.  The backups in the front 4 were FR, RS FR, SO, RS SO

Antonio Morrison was a true JR so again I guess if he graduated already in 3 years he could leave (?) .  (but he sure doesn't sound like a guy leaving)  Other guys were RS SR and true SO.

I can't imagine it is Morrison as he was a potential NFL pick who came back for his senior year and "to graduate".

So if you are naming people above - if any are RS JR last year they would have been beaten out in the 2 deep by other people if they are coming from UF's front 7.  i.e. 3rd string guys if its coming out of UF.  Not inconceviable a 4 star could be 3rd string at UF.

Depth chart shows 3-3-5.

Anzalone is not in the 2 deep and doesnt make sense as an immediate transfer as he is a 2013 and would not be close to a grad transfer.

So I think that eliminates Florida alltogether as there seems no likely candidate in the front 7 (at least in the 2 deep), and anyone in the back 4 who has to sit out a year doesnt seem like a guy UF is going to release to UM.    if it is Florida it is someone who is buried in the depth chart.

Will check out the Auburn guys to see if they  make sense.

RE: Auburn guys

Damn Muschamp is cleaning house - 5 DB attrition alone since he showed up!  fyi - 12 players (!!!) have left Auburn since end of the 14 season.

1) S Derrick Moncrief was a 4 star but at the community college level (sounds like he played 1 year there in between HS and college).  Ironically his community college's logo looks like the split UM that Brandon banished.  He was a true JR last year so would have to sit out a year.  In spring ball he was behind a true freshman named Tim Irvin. He indicated he would pursue transfer to a ACC school

A native of Prattville, Ala., Moncrief told the Advertiser he may try to transfer to an ACC school. If that occurs, Moncrief would have to sit out next season to satisfy the NCAA's transfer rules. Moncrief has one year of eligibility remaining.

.

  Reasons for leaving:

"I came in as the No. 1 safety in the country and things are just not going well there.  But Auburn was a good place, I just want to thank them for everything, for them recruiting me, and I wish them the best of luck."

Moncrief was rated the nation's No. 1 safety in the country out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and was expected to step in and start for Auburn in 2014, but he failed to do so and spent most of the season as Auburn's third safety. He averaged 20.8 snaps per game and made 27 tackles.

Originally from Prattville High School, Moncrief signed with Auburn out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He was rated by some services as the nation's top junior college safety prospect.

After spring practice, Muschamp said Moncrief needed to "continue to come on."

2) CB Kamryn Melton was a SO who did not crack Auburn's 2 deep depth chart.  Only played 3 games - did not record a tackle.   Prior year suffered a season ending knee injury after 3 game hence eligible for medical RS.   He was only a 3 star prospect so doesnt seem to fit the bill per Webb's description.

3) CB Joe Turner is another JUCO transfer into Auburn.  He was a 3 star at the JUCO level not 4 so again doesn't fit Webb's description.  He didn't play a game last year and has not been with the program for a while it seems.

After becoming the final signee of Auburn's 2014 recruiting class, Turner was unable to find his niche in the secondary. He didn't appear in a single game last fall.

------------

I don't know - I guess Moncrief makes some sense other than the idea he said he plans on attempting to latch on with the ACC.  He is the only 4 star of these 3 but a 4 star at the JUCO level.  These other 2 guys really have contributed little to nothing at the NCAA level and even Moncrief really is a bit player for Auburn.

The other 2 DBs who left Auburn are already elsewhere - this is just the way of the SEC it appears with massive turnover:

The first departure was safety Mackenro Alexander, who transferred to South Florida in January. One month later, corner Kalvaraz Bessent — who redshirted in 2014 — left to pursue other opportunities. He reportedly enrolled at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan., last month.

I am disappointed you guys do not care about your rivals enough to bring up their past failings.  We lost Anzalone after he had his picture taken with a "superfan" who was also a convicted sex offender.  You discussed it here and here.

He committed to ND for a while before he flipped rather late to Florida which set some of the Irish off and led to this sage column about not tweeting recruits.

What is this world coming to when a simple Ohio State alum has to teach Michigan folks history.  :)
